Book Synopsis The Transnational in Literary Studies by : Kai Wiegandt
Download or read book The Transnational in Literary Studies written by Kai Wiegandt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume clarifies the meanings and applications of the concept of the transnational and identifies areas in which the concept can be particularly useful. The division of the volume into three parts reflects areas which seem particularly amenable to analysis through a transnational lens. The chapters in Part 1 present case studies in which the concept replaces or complements traditionally dominant concepts in literary studies. These chapters demonstrate, for example, why some dramatic texts and performances can better be described as transnational than as postcolonial, and how the transnational underlies and complements concepts such as world literature. Part 2 assesses the advantages and limitations of writing literary history with a transnational focus. These chapters illustrate how such a perspective loosens the epistemic stranglehold of national historiographies, but they also argue that the transnational and national agendas of literary historiography are frequently entangled. The chapters in Part 3 identify transnational genres such as the transnational historical novel, transnational migrant fiction and translinguistic theatre, and analyse the specific poetics and politics of these genres.

Book Synopsis Fighters and Singers by : Isobel White
Download or read book Fighters and Singers written by Isobel White and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on Australian Aborigines is vast, but much of it is strangely silent about the experiences and activities of women. This collection of stories of the eventful lives and strong characters of a number of Aboriginal women offers a more intimate and personal view. Their lives span a century of history in fifteen communities scattered from Cape York Peninsula, Arnhem Land and East Kimberley to the Western Desert, the Centre, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. One of these stories is an autobiography and each of the others contains transcriptions or translations of a woman's own reminiscences, with additional details given by the author. Some women recall the first time they saw a European in their land, others tell how Europeans had influenced their communities generations before they were born. While the authors lived in Aboriginal communities in order to study some particular aspect of the society, the women they describe here became their close friends, companions and helpers, and this book is a record of friendships formed against differences of background, experiences and age. Allegiance to family and familiar territory shapes the personal histories of Aborigines in ways scarcely appreciated by people reared in nuclear family households in cities. The strength of family and community ties can be better understood through reading about the women who contribute so much to the maintenance of these communities.

Book Synopsis Social Anthropology and Development Policy by : R. D. Grillo
Download or read book Social Anthropology and Development Policy written by R. D. Grillo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1985 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 4e de couv. : In recent years there has been considerable interest among anthropologists throughout the world in the "application" of their discipline to policy questions. The involvement of anthropologists in policy matters has a lengthy history, especially during the colonial period, and has always stimulated controversy and debate. This volume arises from the 1983 ASA Conference, which was a major review of the state of anthropology with special emphasis on newer developments in the field, particulary in applied subjects. It is a timely and valuable contribution to the debate about the social and cultural dimensions of policy planning. The papers fall into three groups. The first examines the role of the anthropologist in a variety of historical/political contexts; the second looks at what specifically the anthropologist can contribute to policy work; the third attempts to spell out in more general terms what working in the applied field might mean for anthropologists and those who employ them as policy advisers.
