Leading cultural historians, museum curators, art historians, and architects present cutting edge research examining how famous and less known protagonists created new cultural languages, identifications and networks, engaged in social debates, and contributed to the cultural renewal of Vienna, a major capital in Central Europe, between 1800 and 1938.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical dialogue analysis is a new branch of historical pragmatics. The papers of this interdisciplinary volume contribute to charting the developing field by presenting a survey of recent research from the different traditions of English, German and Romance language studies. Both the introductory paper by the editors and the individual papers deal with fundamental theoretical questions, e.g. the question of types of historical developments in dialogue forms, and methodological problems, e.g. the finding and interpretation of relevant data. The fifteen case studies presented in this volume provide a wide range of new data. The range of topics includes the pragmatic form of 16th century religious controversies in Germany, forms of polite answers in Early Modern German conversation culture, forms of dialogue in Early Modern English medical writing, learning English through dialogues in the 16th century, structures of bargaining dialogues in Late Medieval French, and reflections of spontaneous dialogue in Early Romance texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kleine Schriften, written by the eminent German scholar of Islamic Studies Josef van Ess, is a unique collection of Van Ess' widely scattered short writings, journal articles, encyclopaedia entries, (autobiographical) essays, reviews and lectures, in (mainly) German, English and French, some of which are published here for the first time. It includes a full bibliography of the author’s work, in addition to two indexes of classical authors and works, which aim to make accessible the remarkable riches that these Kleine Schriften have to offer. The three-volume collection, carefully selected by the author himself, offers over 150 texts organized primarily along Van Ess’ own biography and the history of the discipline. It is divided into twelve parts, beginning with Tübingen where his career began in 1968, and ending with Retrospects and Postscripts for the future, with the thematic complexes Islam and its first options and Muʿtazila as centre pieces. All parts are introduced by brief accounts of the historical context in which each of the assembled texts was written and which course subsequent scholarship may have taken.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the full panorama of ten centuries of Christian monastic life. It moves from the deserts of Egypt and the Frankish monasteries of early medieval Europe to the religious ruptures of the eleventh and twelfth centuries and the reforms of the later Middle Ages. Throughout that story the book balances a rich sense of detail with a broader synthetic view. It presents the history of religious life and its orders as a complex braid woven from multiple strands: individual and community, spirit and institution, rule and custom, church and world. The result is a synthesis that places religious life at the center of European history and presents its institutions as key catalysts of Europe's move toward modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management makes the world go round. This is a strong belief of the authors of this volume. The current tumultuous economic and financial crisis and the intensifying threats caused by climate change are symptoms of a global system that is out of balance. It is increasingly assumed that managers share the responsibility for these developments. After all, management as a major force in the shaping of global economic conditions and social relations make the world go round. At present an alliance of business schools, publishers and certification agencies is rapidly organizing the learning of executives and leaders into a global industry developed by professional managers. But under these circumstances do MBA courses and executive education programs in business schools offer the appropriate learning for current challenges? And can managers learn the lessons of the crisis in these learning environments? Or does the transformation of learning into a global business rather tend to discourage critical thinking and reflective patterns of learning? “Management makes the world go round”. This was also the title of an international conference on management learning , where the authors of this volume presented their ideas, shared their experiences, increased their knowledge and contributed to a fascinating debate in a context with a great professional and cultural diversity. This inspired the group to hold on to this debate and develop the ideas further on. So this book was created and brought into the IAP division of Management Education.

Was fehlt? Protagoras claims to be able to educate the young. Why not? If «Man is Measure of Everything», anybody can make everybody ‘better’... To Plato, this doesn't add up. What's lacking? What is the measure of Man, if Man be measure?

Book excerpt: Organisations and institutions of higher education are more and more challenged by current economic, social and political conditions to react competitively and innovatively on new requirements, such as demographic change, globalisation or skilled labour shortage. In addition, universities and companies alike, have to compete for the most qualified staff. In order to produce more innovative solutions and to perform better, it is essential to integrate gender and diversity perspectives as important elements of organisational and human resources development. This anthology presents different theoretical and practical approaches, best practice examples and important aspects of gender and diversity management in organisations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
