Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the ages, animals have played a significant role in human life. But the relationship between animals and humans is often taken for granted. For example, everyone knows that dogs can be trained to sit, stay, and roll over. But could a dog guide a blind man 2,144 miles down the Appalachian Trail--a difficult feat for a sighted person? Could a cat actually defend a sleeping infant from a deadly rattlesnake that is prepared to strike? Could a dolphin really save a person who is drowning at sea? Could a monkey communicate using English? Defying facts as we know them, these stories detail the intelligence, bravery, and skill of animals. They make us take a second look at creatures who have been viewed as being driven largely by instinct, and they begin to reveal the mysteries of animal intelligence.

Book Synopsis Rewriting 'Les Mystères de Paris' by : Amy Wigelsworth
Download or read book Rewriting 'Les Mystères de Paris' written by Amy Wigelsworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key works of popular fiction are often rewritten to capitalize on their success. But what are the implications of this rewriting process? Such is the question addressed by this detailed study of several rewritings of Eugène Sue’s Mystères de Paris (1842-43), produced in the latter half of the nineteenth century, in response to the phenomenal success of Sue’s archetypal urban mystery. Pursuing a compelling analogy between city and text, and exploring the resonance of the palimpsest trope to both, Amy Wigelsworth argues that the mystères urbains are exemplary rewritings, which shed new light on contemporary reading and writing practices, and emerge as early avatars of a genre still widely consumed and enjoyed in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: With unique personal insight, experience, and hard science, Animals in Translation is the definitive, groundbreaking work on animal behavior and psychology. Temple Grandin’s professional training as an animal scientist and her history as a person with autism have given her a perspective like that of no other expert in the field of animal science. Grandin and coauthor Catherine Johnson present their powerful theory that autistic people can often think the way animals think—putting autistic people in the perfect position to translate “animal talk.” Exploring animal pain, fear, aggression, love, friendship, communication, learning, and even animal genius, Grandin is a faithful guide into their world. Animals in Translation reveals that animals are much smarter than anyone ever imagined, and Grandin, standing at the intersection of autism and animals, offers unparalleled observations and extraordinary ideas about both.

Book Synopsis Animals in Greek and Roman Religion and Myth by : Patricia A. Johnston
Download or read book Animals in Greek and Roman Religion and Myth written by Patricia A. Johnston and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a variety of approaches to the different ways in which the role of animals was understood in ancient Greco-Roman myth and religion, across a period of several centuries, from Preclassical Greece to Late Antique Rome. Animals in Greco-Roman antiquity were thought to be intermediaries between men and gods, and they played a pivotal role in sacrificial rituals and divination, the foundations of pagan religion. The studies in the first part of the volume examine the role of the animals in sacrifice and divination. The second part explores the similarities between animals, on the one hand, and men and gods, on the other. Indeed, in antiquity, the behaviour of several animals was perceived to mirror human behaviour, while the selection of the various animals as sacrificial victims to specific deities often was determined on account of some peculiar habit that echoed a special attribute of the particular deity. The last part of this volume is devoted to the study of animal metamorphosis, and to this end a number of myths that associate various animals with transformation are examined from a variety of perspectives.
