Book excerpt: In 2002, a tiny, golden puppy was born without one of her front legs. Her other front leg was badly deformed, leaving her unable to walk. The Stringfellow family adopted the puppy and named her Faith. However, they worried that little Faith might never be able to walk on her own. As Faith got older and stronger, the Stringfellows helped her to balance on her hind legs. Eventually, they used peanut butter to coax her to walk all by herself on only two legs! This is just one of the many inspiring stories found in Disabled Dogs. Some dogs, like Faith, are missing legs, while others do not have the ability to see or hear. Whatever the challenge, young readers will be amazed at how these dogs are able to lead full and active lives, and provide hope to people who have similar disabilities. With dramatic, full-color photos of these extra-special canines, this book is sure to warm the hearts of dog lovers everywhere.

Book excerpt: A moving and scientific look at the curative powers--both physical and mental--of rescuing a shelter animal, by the president of Humane Society Silicon Valley. MUTUAL RESCUE profiles the transformational impact that shelter pets have on humans, exploring the emotional, physical, and spiritual gifts that rescued animals provide. It explores through anecdote, observation, and scientific research, the complexity and depth of the role that pets play in our lives. Every story in the book brings an unrecognized benefit of adopting homeless animals to the forefront of the rescue conversation. In a nation plagued by illnesses--16 million adults suffer from depression, 29 million have diabetes, 8 million in any given year have PTSD, and nearly 40% are obese--rescue pets can help: 60% of doctors said they prescribe pet adoption and a staggering 97% believe that pet ownership provides health benefits. For people in chronic emotional, physical, or spiritual pain, adopting an animal can transform, and even save, their lives. Each story in the book takes a deep dive into one potent aspect of animal adoption, told through the lens of people's personal experiences with their rescued pets and the science that backs up the results. This book will resonate with readers hungering for stories of healing and redemption.
Book Synopsis A Service Dog Life by : Kimberly Kiely
Download or read book A Service Dog Life written by Kimberly Kiely and published by . This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will become a valuable tool for parents, teachers, and educators for the future development of the ADA culture. Educational materials do not provide necessary information to educate people, especially young children, the importance and great abilities service animals provide their handlers. New vocabulary is introduced, and dog commands are typed in capital letters to guide the reader in the necessity of one-word commands for a service animal. I wrote this book based on the fact that after becoming permanently disabled, I needed a service dog. I was trying to find books to introduce the idea to my family and especially my young son. There were not a lot of books available to explain the situation of bringing a service dog into a home to help with disabilities. I further became aware that there were even less materials available that mentioned any aid beyond using a wheelchair or being blind. Where were the books to explain to people and their children the need for service animals for people that can be visually and not visually seen as having a disability? Therefore, it led me to believe that I should write a book that shows that there are many needs for service dogs and service animals for many different people. Service dogs and service animals serve a great purpose to many individuals for many different reasons.
