Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to j.ir€'~ 0l'l\' a new technique for the experimental investigation of the free wave model sound field of acoustics. The technique is based on the use of spherical harmonic functions of angle. Acousticians frequently encounter random sound fields whose properties may be closely modelled by use of the "free wave" field. This model field is defined by two basic statistical properties: stationarity in time, and homogeneity in space. Stationarity means that any single order statistic measured by a microphone in the field will be independent of the time at which the recording is taken, while homogeneity means that the measurement will also be independent of the mic- phone's position in the field. Furthermore, second order statistics obtained from the measurements of two microphones will depend only on the time lapse between the two recordings, and the relative spatial separation of the micro phones, and not on the microphones' absolute positions in space and time. The free wave field may also (equivalently) be pictured as a collection of plane sound waves which approach an observation position from all angles. These are the "free waves" of the title, with no correlation between waves at different angles and frequencies, although there may exist an angle-dependant plane wave density function. This is a measure of the density of sound energy arriving from different angles. The free wave field has proved to be a simple but remarkably powerful model.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of acoustic fields with submerged elastic structures, both by propagation and scattering, is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories world-wide with ever-increasing sophistication of experiments and analysis. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centers that represent the present state-of-the-art in the study of acoustic elastic interaction, being on the cutting edge of these investigations. This includes the description of acoustic scattering from submerged elastic objects and shells by the Resonance Scattering Theory of Flax, Dragonette and šberall, and the interaction of these phenomena in terms of interface waves. It also includes the use of this theory for the purpose of inverse scattering, i.e. the determination of the scattered objects properties from the received acoustic backscattered signals. The problem of acoustically excited waves in inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials, and of inhomogeneous propagating waves is considered. Vibrations and resonances of elastic shells, including shells with various kinds of internal attachments, are analyzed. Acoustic scattering experiments are described in the time domain, and on the basis of the Wigner-Ville distribution. Acoustic propagation in the water column over elastic boundaries is studied experimentally both in laboratory tanks, and in the field, and is analyzed theoretically. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing, including such aspects like probe modelling, scattering by various types of cracks, receiving probes and calibration by a side-drilled hole is also studied in details.A comprehensive picture of these complex phenomena and other aspects is presented in the book by researchers that are experts in each of these domains, giving up-to-date accounts of the field in all these aspects.

Book excerpt: This is an up-to-date reference and textbook on modern acoustics from a signal-theoretic point of view, as well as a wave-theoretic approach for students, engineers, and researchers. It provides readers the fundamental basis of acoustics and vibration science and proceeds up to recent hot topics related to acoustic transfer functions and signal analysis including a perceptual point of view. In the first part, the work uniquely introduces into the fundamentals without using heavy mathematics The following, advanced chapters deal with new and deep insights into acoustic signal analysis and investigation of room transfer functions based on the poles and zeros.

Book excerpt: Advanced Applications in Acoustics, Noise and Vibration provides comprehensive and up-to-date overviews of knowledge, applications and research activities in a range of topics that are of current interest in the practice of engineering acoustics and vibration technology. The thirteen chapters are grouped into four parts: signal processing, acoustic modelling, environmental and industrial acoustics, and vibration. Following on from its companion volume Fundamentals of Noise and Vibration this book is based partly on material covered in a selection of elective modules in the second semester of the Masters programme in 'Sound and Vibration Studies' of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton, UK and partly on material presented in the annual ISVR short course 'Advanced Course in Acoustics, Noise and Vibration'.

Book excerpt: A recently proposed method [Apelfeld, Y., Depth Discrimination of an Acoustic Source Based on Modal Energy Distribution. MIT, 2007] for rough, but fast and robust depth classification of acoustic sources was investigated in realistic towing scenarios. The method uses modal energy distribution as a categorical indicator for the source depth. In this study we analyzed the method performance in two major towing patterns: the "yo-yo" pattern and the "one-time" depth sampling pattern. The position of the array elements was obtained using the MOOS-IvP simulation package. Among the main towing parameters of the performance evaluation was the pitch angle of the array. The main finding of this study is the discovery of a relationship between vertical orientation of the array and the relative source bearing. Thus, downward array orientation leads to relatively high separation capability for sources located at 00 relative bearing. In the contrary, upward array orientation leads to high separation capability for sources located at the opposite horizontal relative bearing (1800). This relationship implies direct tactical considerations on the AUV deployment that are discussed and summarized in this study.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the proceedings of the 19th International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany during April 3 -5, 1991. It was the first time that the symposium was held in Europe after major political changes happened in that area. The freedom to travel for all people from eastern European countries was an obvious reason for the great numbers of sub mitted abstracts and for numerous conference participants. 193 of 239 submitted contributions from 29 countries were accepted for presentation by authors from USA (13%), Canada (2%), Japan (7%), Peoples Republic of China (7%), United Kingdom (4%), France (7%), Italy (3%), Poland (4%), Soviet Union (7%), Germany (28%) and other countries (18%). 283 scientists from 29 countries attended the conference representing the interdisciplinary field between mathematics, physics, engineering and medicine. 151 papers were available for publication in this proceedings covering the topics 1. Mathematics and Physics of Acoustical Imaging 2. Components and Systems 3. Applications in Medicine and Biology 4. Applications in Nondestructive Testing 5. Remote Sensing Applications 6. Industrial Applications A relative large number of contributions on acoustical microscopy was included in the conference program within topics 3 and 4. Also, papers on "non-traditional" acoustical imaging subjects, e. g. on phonon imaging and on remote sensing in the atmosphere, have broadened the scope of the conference. The success and stimulation of the conference and of the papers presented in this volume is owed, of course to the authors and participants.

Book excerpt: The technique for determining the near and far acoustic field of a jet through measurements of pressure-gradient correlations on an imaginary conical surface surrounding the jet is discussed. The necessary analytical developments are presented, and their feasibility is checked by using a point source as the sound generator. The distribution of the apparent sources on the cone, equivalent to the point source, is determined in terms of the pressure-gradient correlations.
