Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglo-Indian Studies My book, "Indian Problems," has not only been well received by the British Press, but has been quoted by Lord Curzon in a Debate in the House of Lords. Among my humble suggestions therein which aroused attention was the granting of the Victoria Cross to members of the Native Army, which was graciously taken into consideration by the King-Emperor, with the result that the much-coveted V.C. is now within the reach of my countrymen. Such circumstances have encouraged me to publish the present volume, "Anglo-Indian Studies." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kela Bai: An Anglo-Indian Idyll It was the time of divine weather after the rains. The hot season had burned itself away. The monsoon had burst in sweat-drops at the end of June. Then came four steaming months, when the air was white with the hiss and the swish and the swirl of the rains. The swollen Ganges overtopped her banks, and foamed among the roots of the yellow babul-bushes. Porpoises turned somersaults in the brown eddies. The rain-birds wailed in every dripping grove. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Dove of Amritzir a Romance of Anglo-Indian Life "Kasan Singh, how dare you!" and the speaker sprang up from before the table, at which he had been working, and looked down with an expression of mingled anger and pity at a man, crouching at his feet, muttering words in a strange tongue, but which, nevertheless, conveyed to the mind of the hearer a distinct idea of prayer and incantation. Far from being repulsed by the angry ejaculation, Kasan Singh's voice rose, as he dragged himself to where the officer stood, and then prostrated himself on the ground until his forehead touched the Englishman's feet. It was truly a strange scene. The first rays of the early morning sun, penetrating through the uplifted canvas, which formed the doorway, lit up the interior of a large, military tent. A huge Pathan, whose dark face was rendered still fiercer by his long hair, heavy black whiskers and moustache, stood at the entrance, a revolver in his hand, whilst in a corner half a dozen natives, clad in yellow robes with blue turbanned heads, crouched with outstretched hands, gazing in the direction of their comrade and of the man he was evidently adoring. Book excerpt: The standard image of the Raj is of an aloof, pampered and prejudiced British elite lording it over an oppressed and hostile Indian subject population. Like most caricatures, this obscures as much truth as it reveals. The British had not always been so aloof. The earlier, more cosmopolitan period of East India Company rule saw abundant ‘interracial’ sex and occasional marriage, alongside greater cultural openness and exchange. The result was a large and growing ‘mixed-race’ community, known by the early twentieth century as Anglo-Indians. Notwithstanding its faults, Empire could never have been maintained without the active, sometimes enthusiastic, support of many colonial subjects. These included Indian elites, professionals, civil servants, businesspeople and minority groups of all kinds, who flourished under the patronage of the imperial state, and could be used in a ‘divide and rule’ strategy to prolong colonial rule. Independence was profoundly unsettling to those destined to become minorities in the new nation, and the Anglo-Indians were no exception. This refreshing account looks at the dramatic end of British rule in India through Anglo-Indian eyes, a perspective that is neither colonial apologia nor nationalist polemic. Its history resonates strikingly with the complex identity debates of the twenty-first century.

Been written respecting what was termed in India the Company Bahadoor, and those events in consequence of which the soil of Hindostan has now become encircled by the British Crown, it is still matter for regret that so little should be gene rally known of the scope and spirit of current Anglo Indian administration. Great men of wide experience, representing every shade of human thought, have re corded volumes of Opinions and decisions on each question as it has been born; while others, rich in the faculty of turning to account a rare research, have laboured at the almost hopeless task of teaching Eng land how to know her Eastern Empire. Yet such of the results attained as are accessible to all, have rather tended to obscure than to enlighten general readers, while the opening for sensation writing, af forded by such thrilling themes as our trans-indus wars, and the events of 1857, have too frequently been used as frames for highly-coloured pictures, drawn by able advocates of different schools and services. Thus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Roman Empire and the British Empire in India: The Diffusion of Roman and English Law Throughout the World; Two Historical Studies These two Essays appeared, along with a number of others bearing upon cognate historical and legal topics, in two volumes entitled Studies in History and Juris prudence which I published some years ago. As it is now thought that they may have an interest for some readers, and especially for students of Indian history, who may not care to procure those volumes, they are now issued separately. Both Essays have been revised throughout and brought up to date by the insertion of the figures of the latest census of India and by references to recent legislation. They do not, however, touch upon any questions of cur rent Indian or English politics, for a discussion of these must needs involve matter of a controversial nature and might distract the reader's attention from those broad conclusions upon which historical students and impartial observers of India as it stands to-day are pretty gener ally agreed. It is a pleasure to me to acknowledge and express my gratitude for the help which I have received in the work of revision from one of my oldest and most valued friends, Sir Courtenay Ilbert, formerly Legal Member of the Viceroy's Council in India and now Clerk of the House of Commons. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Inglorious Empire' tells the real story of the British in India from the arrival of the East India Company to the end of the Raj, revealing how Britain's rise was built upon its plunder of India. In the eighteenth century, India's share of the world economy was as large as Europe's. By 1947, after two centuries of British rule, it had decreased six-fold. Beyond conquest and deception, the Empire blew rebels from cannon, massacred unarmed protesters, entrenched institutionalised racism, and caused millions to die from starvation. British imperialism justified itself as enlightened despotism for the benefit of the governed, but Shashi Tharoor takes on and demolishes this position, demonstrating how every supposed imperial "gift" - from the railways to the rule of law -was designed in Britain's interests alone. He goes on to show how Britain's Industrial Revolution was founded on India's deindustrialisation, and the destruction of its textile industry.
