Book Synopsis Complex Words, Causatives, Verbal Periphrases and the Gerund by : Petr Čermák
Download or read book Complex Words, Causatives, Verbal Periphrases and the Gerund written by Petr Čermák and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph focuses on the typological differences between the four most widely spoken Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian) and Czech. Utilizing data from InterCorp, the parallel corpus project of the Czech National Corpus, the book analyses various categories (expression of potential non-volitional participation, iterativity, causation, beginning of an action and adverbial subordination) to discover differences and similarities between Czech and the Romance languages. Due to the massive amount of data mined, as well as the high number of languages examined, the monograph presents general and individual typological features of the four Romance languages and Czech that often exceed what has previously been accepted in the field of comparative linguistics.

Book Synopsis Advances in formal Slavic linguistics 2017 by : Franc Marušič
Download or read book Advances in formal Slavic linguistics 2017 written by Franc Marušič and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Formal Slavic Linguistics 2017 is a collection of fifteen articles that were prepared on the basis of talks given at the conference Formal Description of Slavic Languages 12.5, which was held on December 7-9, 2017, at the University of Nova Gorica. The volume covers a wide array of topics, such as control verbs, instrumental arguments, and perduratives in Russian, comparatives, negation, n-words, negative polarity items, and complementizer ellipsis in Czech, impersonal se-constructions and complementizer doubling in Slovenian, prosody and the morphology of multi-purpose suffixes in Serbo-Croatian, and indefinite numerals and the binding properties of dative arguments in Polish. Importantly, by exploring these phenomena in individual Slavic languages, the collection of articles in this volume makes a significant contribution to both Slavic linguistics and to linguistics in general.
Book Synopsis Dependency Linguistics by : Kim Gerdes
Download or read book Dependency Linguistics written by Kim Gerdes and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers the reader a unique possibility to obtain a concise introduction to dependency linguistics and to learn about the current state of the art in the field. It unites the revised and extended versions of the linguistically-oriented papers to the First International Conference on Dependency Linguistics held in Barcelona. The contributions range from the discussion of definitional challenges of dependency at different levels of the linguistic model, its role beyond the classical grammatical description, and its annotation in dependency treebanks to concrete analyses of various cross-linguistic phenomena of syntax in its interplay with phonetics, morphology, and semantics, including phenomena for which classical simple phrase-structure based models have proven to be unsatisfactory. The volume will be thus of interest to both experts and newcomers to the field of dependency linguistics and its computational applications.

Book Synopsis Contrastive Analysis of Discourse-pragmatic Aspects of Linguistic Genres by : Karin Aijmer
Download or read book Contrastive Analysis of Discourse-pragmatic Aspects of Linguistic Genres written by Karin Aijmer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume will give readers insight into how genres are characterised by the patterns of frequency and distribution of linguistic features across a number of European languages. The material presented in this book will also stimulate further corpus-based contrastive research including more languages, more genres and different types of corpora. This is the first special issue of the Yearbook of Corpus Linguistics and Pragmatics, a publication that addresses the interface between the two disciplines and offers a platform to scholars who combine both methodologies to present rigorous and interdisciplinary findings about language in real use. Corpus linguistics and Pragmatics have traditionally represented two paths of scientific thought, parallel but often mutually exclusive and excluding. Corpus Linguistics can offer a meticulous methodology based on mathematics and statistics, while Pragmatics is characterized by its effort in the interpretation of intended meaning in real language.
