Diskrete Mathematik ist ein junges Gebiet der Mathematik, das in einzigartiger Weise sogenannte „reine Mathematik“ mit „Anwendungen“ verbindet. Um diese Antwort zu verstehen, müssen wir etwas weiter ausholen. Bis vor wenigen Jahrzehnten hatte nach allgemeiner Meinung die angewandte Mathematik ausschließlich die Aufgabe, die physikalische Welt möglichst gut und aussagekräftig zu beschreiben. Typische Fragen waren dabei: Wie modelliert man den Raum? Wie misst man den Raum? Wie beschreibt man Bewegungen? Die mathematischen Disziplinen, die sich mit solchen Fragestellungen beschäftigen, sind die Geometrie und die Analysis, sowie alle sich daraus ableitenden Teildisziplinen. Dies sind vor allem Teilgebiete der Mathematik, die sich mit kontinuierlichen, „stetigen“ Phänomenen beschäftigen. Im 20. Jahrhundert, insbesondere seit der Einführung des Computers in der Mitte des Jahrhunderts, drängte sich ein anderer Typ von Fragen in den Vordergrund. Die H- ausforderung besteht darin, Modelle zum Verständnis und zur Beherrschung von end- chen, eventuell allerdings sehr großen Phänomenen und Strukturen zu entwickeln. Solche Strukturen können sein: Eine Gesellschaft als Menge ihrer endlich vielen Mitglieder, ein ökonomischer Prozess mit nur endlich vielen möglichen Zuständen, ein Computer, der nur Zahlen bis zu einer gewissen Größe verarbeiten kann, usw.
