Book excerpt: A piercing, unforgettable love story set in Greenwood, Oklahoma, also known as the “Black Wall Street,” and against the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Isaiah Wilson is, on the surface, a town troublemaker, but is hiding that he is an avid reader and secret poet, never leaving home without his journal. Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family’s financial situation is in turmoil. Though they’ve attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can’t turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon. But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the Black community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

Book excerpt: Private Investigator Charlie Parker returns in this heart-pounding thriller as he seeks revenge against the darkest forces in the world, from “one of the best thriller writers we have” (Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times bestselling author) and the internationally bestselling author of the acclaimed The Woman in the Woods. He is our best hope. He is our last hope. He is our only hope. On a lonely moor in northern England, the body of a young woman is discovered. In the south, a girl lies buried beneath a Saxon mound. To the southeast, the ruins of a priory hide a human skull. Each is a sacrifice, a summons. And something in the darkness has heard the call. Charlie Parker has also heard it and from the forests of Maine to the deserts of the Mexican border, from the canals of Amsterdam to the streets of London, he will track those who would cast the world into darkness. Parker fears no evil—but evil fears him. “A seamless, expansive, and chilling blend of police procedural and gothic horror tale” (Kirkus Reviews), A Book of Bones will keep you guessing until the very last page.

There's also an angel involved. A real one.
Download or read book Angel Bones written by Galen Olmsted and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis will consist of four sections--itch, materialism, formless, and work. The first and second sections will lay out Georges Bataille's philosophy, illustrating his use of parodies and operative terms to upset ontological hierarchies. The third will describe the theory from the book Formless: A User's Guide, applying analogously to my work, operations discussed by the authors that displace ideologies. In 1996, Rosalind Krauss and Yves Alain Bois used Bataille's writings to construct a model of art history within which modernism is "grasped against the grain." Antithetical to the postulates formulated most extensively by the critic Clement Greenberg, formless creates a rupture between formalism and iconography--a dialectical opposition that is key to modernism's infrastructure. The fourth section, work will demonstrate how my installation participates in the art historical model extrapolated from Bataille's writing. I will claim that my work contradicts porcelain's typical associations, exposing their negatives. My installation operates to displace ideologies surrounding porcelain, ceramics and sculpture. Scattered and piled in a manner similar to the way garbage or rubble sit on the ground, the porcelain elements develop connotations of waste, rather than purity.
