Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is true. This book is about my novel Nadia. I published this novel in the spring of 2015. By this time, I had written three other crime thrillers. Nadia is my fourth and final one. Nadia was first conceived when I was seventeen. The year was 1982 and I had just begun art school. Thirty-three years later, I would write it. The story seemed to bear no relevance to my life at all. A playboy billionaire is involved in a horrific car crash, propelling his mystery passenger into a nightmare. During the writing, I felt geared, prompted by a force. I had believed this to be routine writer’s itch. What I didn’t realise was that an undercurrent existed in this novel. This undercurrent was rendered invisible to the novel I believed I was writing. The same thing has happened to all my novels. A scene in Nadia would open my eyes. It was autumn 2016 and the life I had believed in would be destroyed. Five years after beginning Nadia I am ready to analyse it. I have been through this process three times already with my previous novels. All have been harrowing and all have given up hard truths. As this is a true story, I have included relevant diary entries. These inform upon the force that drives this novel as well as tell its own story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's rare to find a child whose very first best friend wasn't a fuzzy teddy bear or downy blanket. Whether clutched securely in little arms each night or dragged gamely through the playground each day, these fiercely loved companions universally ease the uncertainties and loneliness of childhood. DIRTY WOW WOW AND OTHER LOVE STORIES celebrates the lives of fifty transitional love objects: a sweetly poignant collection of stuffies, blankies, lovies, and dolls who inspired and comforted their owners. Bundles of love and warmth fashioned from fluff and fur, these cherished friends have a lifetime of stories sewn up in their tattered bodies--a trip to Paris smushed in a suitcase, a secret hiding spot behind the family liquor cabinet, an interminable wait in the lost-and-found bin before a joyous reunion at home. With stunning photographs that reveal the personalities within, this thoughtful tribute is at once funny and oddly soothing-like a certain shabby buddy who's tucked away but never forgotten. Hear the NPR Weekend Edition interview with the authors of Dirty Wow Wow Reviews"This charming book would be a perfect gift for collectors and also an offbeat surprise for new parents." -Minneapolis Star Tribune "Dirty Wow Wow's striking photographs and brief narratives stir up vivid memories of . . . long-lost companions." -Southwest Spirit Magazine "This clever work, peppered with sumptuous snapshots of raggedy dolls, pays tribute to the beloved companions of childhood." -Entertainment Weekly's "Must List" View the gallery of entries from the Show Us your Dirty Wow Wow Contest

Book excerpt: A vibrant, sympathetic portrait of the once and future king of rock 'n' roll by the award-winning author of Shiloh and In Country To this clear-eyed portrait of the first rock 'n' roll superstar, Bobbie Ann Mason brings a novelist's insight and the empathy of a fellow Southerner who, from the first time she heard his voice on the family radio, knew that Elvis was "one of us." Elvis Presley deftly braids the mythic and human aspects of his story, capturing both the charismatic, boundary-breaking singer who reveled in his celebrity and the soft-spoken, working-class Southern boy who was fatally unprepared for his success. The result is a riveting, tragic book that goes to the heart of the American dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unusual memoir contrasting the lives of Royals, with an ordinary working class Sheffield family. An aristocratic lady and a girl from Sheffield are born into large families at the height of the British Empire, where grand houses had elephant foot stools, cutlery with ivory handles, tiger skin rugs and Imperial Leather soap. In the north, horse and carts with ‘rag and bone’ men shout, “Any old irons.”The northern girl wears ‘hand me down’ clothes and lives in a ‘two up, two down’, back to back house. The lady wears fine clothes and lives in grand homes. Both women experience turmoil and sadness in the First World War, and they both marry in 1923.This book is about the parallel life stories of an extraordinary Royal lady and an ordinary woman as they go through life changing upheavals and the fear of a second World War. They both have daughters in the same year – one was destined to be Queen and the other was to become the author’s mother.Jean A Stockdale began by writing poetry before moving onto write the stories that lay behind each poem. My Spring is her look at the past through the unusual lens of her own northern family background and contrasting it with the Royal Family.
