Book excerpt: This is the first book on ranaviruses. Ranaviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses that cause hemorrhagic disease in amphibians, reptiles, and fish. They have caused mass die-offs of ectothermic vertebrates in wild and captive populations around the globe. There is evidence that this pathogen is emerging and responsible for population declines in certain locations. Considering that amphibians and freshwater turtles are suitable hosts and the most imperiled vertebrate taxa in the world, ranaviruses can have significant impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem function. Additionally, many fish that are raised in aquaculture facilities and traded internationally are suitable hosts; thus, the potential economic impact of ranaviruses is significant. Ranaviruses also serve as a model for replication and gene function of large double-stranded DNA viruses. There is an urgent need to assemble the contemporary information on ranaviruses and provide guidance on how to assess their threats in populations. Through the Global Ranavirus Consortium, 24 experts from six countries were organize to write this volume, the first book on ranaviruses. The book begins with a discussion on the global extent of ranaviruses, case histories of infection and disease in ectothermic vertebrates, and current phylogeny. Basic principles of ranavirus ecology and evolution are covered next, with a focus on host-pathogen interactions and how the virus emerges in its environment. There are two chapters that will discuss the molecular biology of ranaviruses, host response to infection, and the genes responsible for immune system evasion. One chapter establishes standards for testing for infection and diagnosing ranaviral disease. The book ends by providing guidance on how to design ranavirus surveillance studies and analyze data to determine risk, and discussing the role of the Global Ranavirus Consortium in organizing research and outreach activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practical need to partition the world of viruses into distinguishable, universally agreed upon entities is the ultimate justification for developing a virus classification system. Since 1971, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) operating on behalf of the world community of virologists has taken on the task of developing a single, universal taxonomic scheme for all viruses infecting animals (vertebrate, invertebrates, and protozoa), plants (higher plants and algae), fungi, bacteria, and archaea. The current report builds on the accumulated taxonomic construction of the eight previous reports dating back to 1971 and records the proceedings of the Committee since publication of the last report in 2005. Representing the work of more than 500 virologists worldwide, this report is the authoritative reference for virus organization, distinction, and structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New viral diseases are emerging continuously. Viruses adapt to new environments at astounding rates. Genetic variability of viruses jeopardizes vaccine efficacy. For many viruses mutants resistant to antiviral agents or host immune responses arise readily, for example, with HIV and influenza. These variations are all of utmost importance for human and animal health as they have prevented us from controlling these epidemic pathogens. This book focuses on the mechanisms that viruses use to evolve, survive and cause disease in their hosts. Covering human, animal, plant and bacterial viruses, it provides both the basic foundations for the evolutionary dynamics of viruses and specific examples of emerging diseases. - NEW - methods to establish relationships among viruses and the mechanisms that affect virus evolution - UNIQUE - combines theoretical concepts in evolution with detailed analyses of the evolution of important virus groups - SPECIFIC - Bacterial, plant, animal and human viruses are compared regarding their interation with their hosts

Book excerpt: Comparative Diagnosis of Viral Diseases, Volume III: Vertebrate Animal and Related Viruses Part A—DNA Viruses, is devoted to vertebrate animal and related viruses. This book covers in separate chapters the infections caused by each DNA virus family, including slow viruses diseases, as well as the system of Virus Information of the World Health Organization. It provides a comparative description of the principal physicochemical, molecular, structural, genetic, immunological, and biological characteristics of viruses implicated in various diseases, mainly of veterinary importance. With this new concept of comparative diagnosis, the symptoms and the evolution of the diseases are described in detail, as well as the modern methodology for their rapid and specific diagnosis, control, and prevention. This text will interest all virologists and immunologists working in the area of diagnosis and control of animal virus diseases. In particular, it is addressed to the professionals of veterinary sciences working both in the field and in the laboratory and to students of veterinary schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renaissance of virus research is taking centre stage in biology. Empirical data from the last decade indicate the important roles of viruses, both in the evolution of all life and as symbionts of host organisms. There is increasing evidence that all cellular life is colonized by exogenous and/or endogenous viruses in a non-lytic but persistent lifestyle. Viruses and viral parts form the most numerous genetic matter on this planet.

The book also aims demonstrate the basic unity of virology irrespective of whether the natural host is man or one of the lower animals. This book deals with general virology from the viewpoint of comparative medicine. It begins with accounts of the fundamental properties of viruses; proceeds to consider how these agents affect cells and how the animal body responds; and concludes by discussing the methods by which the natural cycle of infection can be interrupted or modified to the benefit of the host. Included are chapters on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of viruses, viral multiplication, the cultivation of viruses, the pathogenesis of viral infections and their pathology, serology, immunity, and, finally, epidemiology and control. It is hoped that this book will be valuable to those interested in a variety of other biological sciences.

Book excerpt: In recent years, zoonoses and communicable diseases common to man and animals have gained increasing attention worldwide. Human diseases that have their origins in infected animals, such as AIDS or Creutzfeldt-Jakob, have highlighted the need for a better understanding of animal diseases in terms of their epidemiology, mechanism of transmission to man, diagnosis, prevention and control. Encroachment into formerly little known ecological areas has increased exposure to such diseases. Also, the speed of modern travel facilitates the spread of the diseases once confined to specific geographic areas. Animal migration and trade pose a similar threat. This new edition provides a detailed overview of the most important zoonotic diseases including: its first appearance, most important outbreaks, latest scientific knowledge, and causative agents. It includes etiology, geographic distribution, symptoms and occurrence in man and animals, source of infection, mode of transmission, role of animals in the epidemiology of the disease, diagnostic techniques and prevention and control measures; name and number according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD -10.). It also includes an index covering synonyms and etiologic agents' names.
