Book excerpt: An exultant novel of New York City at the turn of the twentieth century, about one man's rise to fame and fortune, and his mysterious murder—“engrossing” (Wall Street Journal), “immersive” (The New Yorker), and “seriously entertaining” (The Sunday Times, London). Andrew Haswell Green is dead, shot at the venerable age of eighty-three, when he thought life could hold no more surprises. The killing—on Park Avenue in broad daylight, on Friday the thirteenth—shook the city. Born to a struggling farmer, Green was a self-made man without whom there would be no Central Park, no Metropolitan Museum of Art, no Museum of Natural History, no New York Public Library. But Green had a secret, a life locked within him that now, in the hour of his death, may finally break free. A work of tremendous depth and piercing emotion, The Great Mistake is the story of a city transformed, a murder that made a private man infamous, and a portrait of a singular individual who found the world closed off to him—yet enlarged it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of New York City’s urban development often centers on titanic municipal figures like Robert Moses and on prominent inner Manhattan sites like Central Park. New York Recentered boldly shifts the focus to the city’s geographic edges—the coastlines and waterways—and to the small-time unelected locals who quietly shaped the modern city. Kara Murphy Schlichting details how the vernacular planning done by small businessmen and real estate operators, performed independently of large scale governmental efforts, refigured marginal locales like Flushing Meadows and the shores of Long Island Sound and the East River in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The result is a synthesis of planning history, environmental history, and urban history that recasts the story of New York as we know it.

Book excerpt: Tells the story of the building of the American Museum of Natural History and Hayden Planetarium, a story of history, politics, science, and exploration, including the roles of American presidents, New York power brokers, museum presidents, planetarium directors, polar and African explorers, and German rocket scientists. The American Museum of Natural History is one of New York City’s most beloved institutions, and one of the largest, most celebrated museums in the world. Since 1869, generations of New Yorkers and tourists of all ages have been educated and entertained here. Located across from Central Park, the sprawling structure, spanning four city blocks, is a fascinating conglomeration of many buildings of diverse architectural styles built over a period of 150 years. The first book to tell the history of the museum from the point of view of these buildings, including the planned Gilder Center, The American Museum of Natural History and How It Got That Way contextualizes them within New York and American history and the history of science. Part II, “The Heavens in the Attic,” is the first detailed history of the Hayden Planetarium, from the museum’s earliest astronomy exhibits, to Clyde Fisher and the original planetarium, to Neil deGrasse Tyson and the Rose Center for Earth and Space, and it features a photographic tour through the original Hayden Planetarium. Author Colin Davey spent much of his childhood literally and figuratively lost in the museum’s labyrinthine hallways. The museum grew in fits and starts according to the vicissitudes of backroom deals, personal agendas, two world wars, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. Chronicling its evolution―from the selection of a desolate, rocky, hilly, swampy site, known as Manhattan Square to the present day―the book includes some of the most important and colorful characters in the city’s history, including the notoriously corrupt and powerful “Boss” Tweed, “Father of New York City” Andrew Haswell Green, and twentieth-century powerbroker and master builder Robert Moses; museum presidents Morris K. Jesup, Henry Fairfield Osborn, and Ellen Futter; and American presidents, polar and African explorers, dinosaur hunters, and German rocket scientists. Richly illustrated with period photos, The American Museum of Natural History and How It Got That Way is based on deep archival research and interviews.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Andrew Haswell Green The memoir has been compiled from the diaries, letters, and public papers of its subject, supplemented by the copious references to his public career contained in the newspaper press. The original material has been supplied by the executors of Mr. Green's will, and the work has been done under their sanction and supervision, and in its completed form bears the stamp of their acceptance and approval. Special acknowledgment for well-digested summaries of Mr. Green's work in the creation of Central Park and its adjuncts, and his administration of the Comptroller's Office, is due to Mr. Henry Mann, and free use has been made of an appreciative monograph on Mr. Green's career prepared by Dr. Edward Hagaman Hall. With the events that belong to the most stirring period of Mr. Green's public life, the writer of this Memoir had intimate personal association, and he may claim to have a certain special fitness for dealing with the tangled history of affairs related to the rise and fall of the Tweed Ring. For the rest, he has been guided by the counsel of those more familiar than himself with the later activities herein recorded, and he ventures to express the hope that the narrative of a life so largely devoted to the service of the City of New York may not be found unworthy of its theme by those who knew and appreciated the exceptional work and the unique capacity for public usefulness of Andrew H. Green. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the design of Central Park, the first and arguably the most famous of America’s urban landscape parks. In October 1857 the new park’s board of commissioners announced a public design competition, and the following April the imaginative yet practicable "Greensward” plan submitted by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted was selected. This book tells the fascinating story of how an extraordinary work of public art emerged from the crucible of New York City politics. From William Cullen Bryant’s 1844 editorial calling for "a pleasure ground of shade and recreation” to the completion of construction in 1870, the history of Central Park is an urban epic--a tale not only of animosity, political intrigue, and desire but also of idealism, sacrifice, and genius.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andrew Haswell Green: A Sketch Themistocles is quoted as saying: "I know how to raise a small and inconsiderable city to glory and greatness." Seth Low, Mayor of New York when Mr. Green was killed, in announcing his death to the Board of Aldermen wrote: "It may truthfully be said that to no one man who has labored in and for the city during the last fifty years is the city under greater and more lasting obligations than to Andrew H. Green. The city itself, in some of its most beautiful and enduring features, is the monument of his love; and the city may well cherish his honored name with the undying gratitude that is due to a citizen who has made it both a greater and a better city than it was." Andrew Haswell Green was born on Green Hill in Worcester, Massachusetts, October 6, 1820. He was a son of William Elijah Green and his third wife, Julia Plimpton. The father was born on Green Hill in 1777 and died in his eighty-ninth year, in the room in which he was born. He was graduated from Brown University in 1798 studied law under Judge Edward Bangs of Worcester, became his partner and was afterwards connected in the practice of the law with Judge Bangs's son, Edward D. Bangs, for several years Secretary of State of Massachusetts. During the latter part of his life he withdrew from the practice of his profession and spent his time in the cultivation of his farm. He was, writes his son Andrew, "ever the genial companion of his children." He was married four times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
