Book excerpt: In early modern Europe it has been estimated that up to one in two children did not survive to the age of ten. In the light of this high mortality rate, some historians have argued that parents did not form close relationships with their children, especially the very young. This is clearly refuted by the testimony of bereaved parents such as Martin Luther, and by the volume of consolatory writings produced for grieving families in early modern Lutheran Germany. The authors, clergymen and lay people, regarded grief as a deep wound which required treatment, and they applied the balm of consolation through sermons, tracts and occasional poetry. This study analyses these writings, focusing particularly on the neglected genre of the epicedium (funeral poem). It asks how and why poetry was used to counter the affective impact of parental bereavement, and considers what makes it a suitable vehicle for consolation. The poems, which are analyzed against the contemporary theological, philosophical, and poetological background, are taken from Leichenpredigten (printed funeral booklets), as well as from collections by two contrasting poets, Paul Fleming (1609-40), an unmarried man who wrote to console others, and Margarethe Susanna von Kuntsch (1651-1717), who lost thirteen of her fourteen children. The study seeks to rehabilitate a neglected genre and participates in discussions on the sociology of death, Lutheran teachings about death and mourning, literary presentations of mortality and loss, and the depiction of children and parent-child relations in literature.

Book excerpt: How do the first tragic plays of Andreas Gryphius (1616-1664) shed light on today's political unrest and religious controversies in the Middle East and the Caucasus? Frequent updates remind us that revolt, imprisonment, torture, execution, and beheading still transpire in these regions. Such reports unveil remarkable parallels to the shocking and detailed accounts offered by Gryphius in his first two tragedies. The neighboring powers of Iran, Russia, and Turkey continue to exert influence on nearby minor states. Regional conflict among religions and between forces vying for political power remains the same today as during the lifetime of Gryphius. Such discord also triggered the earlier historic events he drew upon in his tragedies to proclaim the vanity of a transitory world. His plays explore the themes of justice, both human and divine, and conflict in politics, religion, and society as revealed through the destinies of specific historic characters. They voice the tragic continuum of human folly. In 1646 Gryphius selected a remarkable historic event from the year 820, the murder of the Byzantine emperor Leo Armenius, for his first tragedy. His second tragedy, Catharine of Georgia, depicts the 1624 execution of the Georgian queen at the command of Shah Abbas I of Persia. Although these tragedies recapture events occurring eight hundred years apart, both deal with issues very familiar to contemporaries of Gryphius. Now, yet another four hundred years later, these regional problems continue to threaten world peace and stability. Because these issues underlie current news reports that reach us daily, the historical tragedies of Gryphius remain contemporary and compelling. The Stackhouse translations introduce a new reading audience to the first tragedies by the father of German drama. Although many important European works have become accessible internationally in English translation, the gems of German baroque drama have remained unavailable to non-readers of German until now. The time is ripe for Gryphius to emerge from the wings and appear on the stage of world drama! Lande’s Persistence of Folly challenges the accepted account of the origins of German theater by focusing on the misunderstood figure of the fool, whose spontaneous and impish jest captivated audiences, critics, and playwrights from the late sixteenth through the early nineteenth century. Lande radically expands the scope of literary historical inquiry, showing that the fool was not a distraction from attempts to establish a serious dramatic tradition in the German language. Instead, the fool was both a fixture on the stage and a nearly ubiquitous theme in an array of literary critical, governmental, moral-philosophical, and medical discourses, figuring centrally in broad-based efforts to assign laughter a proper time, place, and proportion in society. Persistence of Folly reveals the fool as a cornerstone of the dynamic process that culminated in the works of Lessing, Goethe, and Kleist. By reorienting the history of German theater, Lande’s work conclusively shows that the highpoint of German literature around 1800 did not eliminate irreverent jest in the name of serious drama, but instead developed highly refined techniques for integrating the comic tradition of the stage fool.
