This book was released on 2002 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guerry's Essay on the Moral Statistics of France was among the earliest empirical studies in sociology and criminology. This translation makes the work available for the first time in English. He used data from a variety of sources, most notably the newly-available compilation of criminal justice statistics collected by the French Ministry of Justice. Within the pages of his essay, the reader will find systematic and sophisticated analyses of crime, suicide, education, wealth and poverty, illegitimacy, prostitution, infanticide, military desertion, charitable giving, and other issues of his day (and ours). Guerry's far-reaching analysis exhibits awareness of methodological issues analysts of sociological and criminological data still grapple with today, including measurement error, statistical interaction, and the identification problem. His cartographic methods influenced the Chicago School of Sociology and his pioneering use of content analysis in studying suicide notes paved the way for generations of scholars down to our own day who make use of similar methods. The introduction explores Guerry's life and work, the social context in which it was conducted, its relationship to later developments in French sociology, and its continuing relevance in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Adaptation was central to André Bazin's lifelong query: What is cinema? Placing films alongside literature let him identify the aesthetic and sociological distinctiveness of each. More importantly, it helped him wage his campaign for a modern conception of cinema, one that owed a great deal to developments in the novel. His critical genius is on full display in this collection, where readers are introduced to the foundational concepts of the relationship between film and literary adaptation as put forth by one of the greatest film and cultural critics of the 20th century. Expertly curated and with an introduction by celebrated film scholar Dudley Andrew, the book begins with a selection of essays that show Bazin's film theory in action, followed by reviews of films adapted from renowned novelists of the day (Conrad, Hemingway, Steinbeck; Colette, Sagan, Duras; and more) as well as classic novels of the 19th century (Bronte, Melville, Tolstoy; Balzac, Hugo, Zola; Stendhal and more). Taken together, this volume will be an indispensable resource for anyone interested in literary adaptation, authorship, classical film theory, French film history, and André Bazin's criticism alike. As a bonus, 250 years of French fiction is put in play as Bazin assesses adaptation after adaptation to determine what is at stake for culture, for literature and especially for cinema"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of environmental criminology is a staple theoretical framework in contemporary criminological theory. This fully revised and expanded edition of the world’s first comprehensive and sole-authored textbook on this influential school of criminological thought covers a wide range of topics, including: the origins of environmental criminology; the primary theoretical frameworks, such as social disorganization theory, the routine activity approach, geometry of crime, rational choice perspective, and multilevel models that integrate environmental criminology; the practical application of environmental criminology; an examination of how theories are operationalized and tested; and policy implications for the practice of crime prevention. As well as these popular topics, Martin Andresen also discusses a number of topics that are at the leading edge of research within environmental criminology. New to the third edition is an expanded coverage on multilevel models of environmental criminology, harm indices, crime mapping, hot-spot policing, and future directions in environmental criminology. This text will be ideal for courses on crime prevention, where students are often encouraged to consider policy problems and apply theory to practice. This book offers up environmental criminology as a theoretical framework for making sense of complex neighborhood problems, so it is also perfect for courses on geography of crime, crime analysis, and, indeed, environmental criminology. It would also be a good supplement for courses on criminological theory.

Book excerpt: It is only in the last generation that lovers of art have recognized the special qualities of the 14th century Sienese school of painting, and have found its graceful, conventional drawing and its pleasing decorative effects not inferior to the realism and fidelity to nature praised in other periods. The general admiration accorded to the subtle, lyrical and aristo· cratic expression of abstract and spiritual conceptions which is the essence of Sienese painting, gives us some hope for the future develop ment of taste in Europe and for its artistic tendencies. F. Mason Perkins was the first to understand the aesthetic signific ance, not only of the principal artists of this school, but also of its minor members. His numerous articles on the "Little Masters" have been of great assistance to me in my attempt to write as complete a history as was possible of Sienese painting in the I4th century. I am only too glad to take this opportunity of paying homage to his profound knowledge and enthusiastic activity in this field of study. Other names that deserve mention here are those of Mr. Langton Douglas, the annotator of Crowe and Cavalcaselle and author of many important studies including a IIHistory of Siena"; and of Dr. G. De Nicola, Director of the National Museum, Florence, for among the many subjects with which he is conversant is the history of the Sienese school of painting, on which he has written articles of great value.
