Book Synopsis The People and the Party System by : Vernon Bogdanor
Download or read book The People and the Party System written by Vernon Bogdanor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-09-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive critique of the historical debate on the referendum and electoral reform in British politics from the nineteenth century to 1981. The book falls into two parts. First, the role of the referendum in political debate since the beginning of the century is discussed and a detailed analysis of the referendums of the 1970s is presented. Vernon Bogdanor then clarifies both the benefits and the difficulties involved in the wider use of the referendum. In the second part of the book, he examines proposals for electoral reform since 1830 and considers the attitudes of the parties towards it today. The different forms of proportional representation are discussed and the consequences of adopting them in Britain assessed. The People and the Party System is written in clear, non-technical language and is intended for the general reader. It makes an important contribution to a vital debate and will be of interest to all those concerned with British politics.
Book Synopsis A Mathematical Approach to Proportional Representation: Duncan Black on Lewis Carroll by : Iain S. McLean
Download or read book A Mathematical Approach to Proportional Representation: Duncan Black on Lewis Carroll written by Iain S. McLean and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `This is a book about a well-known writer, Lewis Carroll, and about a little-known subject, the theory of voting' (from the Editors' Introduction). This book has been edited from the manuscripts of the late Scottish economist Duncan Black. Shortly after the publication of The Theory of Committees and Elections Black started to collect material for papers and a book on Lewis Carroll's theory of proportional representation. Black's chapter plans made it clear that the book was to be in three parts, written by himself, followed by a reprint of Carroll's Principles of Parliamentary Representation and its main sources. Part I is biographical, introducing Lewis Carroll and giving relevant details of his life. Part II is Black's already published work on Lewis Carroll. Part III comprises the more detailed arguments about Carroll's reasoning, and Part IV contains reprints of rare original material on proportional representation by Carroll, James Garth Marshall, and Walter Baily. Taken together, the editors have provided a complete reference source for the theory of voting and proportional representation.

Book Synopsis The Handbook of Electoral System Choice by : J. Colomer
Download or read book The Handbook of Electoral System Choice written by J. Colomer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of electoral reform is an extremely timely one. The accelerated expansion of the number of new democracies in the world generates increasing demand for advice on the choice of electoral rules; at the same time, a new reformism in well established democracies seeks new formulae favouring both more representative institutions and more accountable rulers. The Handbook of Electoral System Choice addresses the theoretical and comparative issues of electoral reform in relation to democratization, political strategies in established democracies and the relative performance of different electoral systems. Case studies on virtually every major democracy or democratizing country in the world are included.

Book Synopsis Re-Constructing the Man of Steel by : Martin Lund
Download or read book Re-Constructing the Man of Steel written by Martin Lund and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Martin Lund challenges contemporary claims about the original Superman’s supposed Jewishness and offers a critical re-reading of the earliest Superman comics. Engaging in critical dialogue with extant writing on the subject, Lund argues that much of recent popular and scholarly writing on Superman as a Jewish character is a product of the ethnic revival, rather than critical investigations of the past, and as such does not stand up to historical scrutiny. In place of these readings, this book offers a new understanding of the Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in the mid-1930s, presenting him as an authentically Jewish American character in his own time, for good and ill. On the way to this conclusion, this book questions many popular claims about Superman, including that he is a golem, a Moses-figure, or has a Hebrew name. In place of such notions, Lund offers contextual readings of Superman as he first appeared, touching on, among other ideas, Jewish American affinities with the Roosevelt White House, the whitening effects of popular culture, Jewish gender stereotypes, and the struggles faced by Jewish Americans during the historical peak of American anti-Semitism. In this book, Lund makes a call to stem the diffusion of myth into accepted truth, stressing the importance of contextualizing the Jewish heritage of the creators of Superman. By critically taking into account historical understandings of Jewishness and the comics’ creative contexts, this book challenges reigning assumptions about Superman and other superheroes’ cultural roles, not only for the benefit of Jewish studies, but for American, Cultural, and Comics studies as a whole.
Book Synopsis A Short History of Electoral Systems in Western Europe by : Andrew McLaren Carstairs
Download or read book A Short History of Electoral Systems in Western Europe written by Andrew McLaren Carstairs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise and accessible account of the historical experience of European parliaments – why different electoral systems were adopted, how they have functioned, how they have affected the development of political parties, and in what respects they have been found over time to be either suitable or unsatisfactory. The book begins with a summary of the main electoral systems, analysing and re-assessing each in the light of historical experience. The core of the book, however, is a country-by-country account of the systems which have operated in each of the main West European countries, in the context of their own constitutional, political and social developments.

Book Synopsis Classics of Social Choice by : Iain McLean
Download or read book Classics of Social Choice written by Iain McLean and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the centuries an intriguing collection of thinkers have realized that voting and social choice are not straightforward. Yet despite the work of many distinguished contributors in this area, the subject has only become established in the last few decades. Indeed, many earlier writings were lost and their content forgotten, only to be rediscovered later and then forgotten again. This puzzling saga of intellectual history unfolds in Classics of Social Choice through these original writings. The editors have included recently discovered pieces and other major contributions - newly translated where necessary. The introduction explains who each writer was, locates him in a historical context, and analyzes his argument. It was only in the 1940s and 1950s that the theory of social choice was established by Duncan Black and Kenneth Arrow - whose Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded in part for this work. It is now a large and thriving branch of economics and politics. Classics of Social Choice will interest anyone working in social choice theory as well as students of medieval thought, the Enlightenment, and constitutions.
