Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1845, the United States Naval Academy has prepared professional military leaders at its Annapolis, Maryland, campus. Although it remains steeped in a culture of tradition and discipline, the Academy is not impervious to change. Dispelling the myth that the Academy is a bastion of tradition unmarked by progress, H. Michael Gelfand examines challenges to the Naval Academy's culture from both inside and outside the Academy's walls between 1949 and 2000, an era of dramatic social change in American history. Drawing on more than two hundred oral histories, extensive archival research, and his own participatory observation at the Academy, Gelfand demonstrates that events at Annapolis reflect the transformation of American culture and society at large in the Cold War and post-Cold War periods. In eight chapters, he discusses recruiting and minority midshipmen, the end of mandatory attendance at religious services, women's experiences as they sought and achieved admission and later served as midshipmen, and the responses of multiple generations of midshipmen to societal changes, particularly during the Vietnam War era. This cultural history not only sheds light on events at the Naval Academy but also offers a novel perspective on democratic ideals in the United States.

Download or read book In Jesus' Name written by John D. Laing and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can military chaplains pray "in Jesus' name?" Are they allowed to share their faith openly? Are evangelical Christians persecuted in the military? Does the general prohibition against proselytizing in the military violate soldiers' Constitutional rights? Are liberalism and/or universalism implicitly endorsed by the military and political leadership as the preferred religion of the United States government? In this timely and important book, John Laing draws upon his knowledge as a professor of theology and philosophy and his experience as an Army chaplain in order to address these questions and more, with a view to answering the larger theological question of whether evangelicals can successfully serve as military chaplains while remaining true to their conservative biblical beliefs and evangelistic commitments. While the book is primarily written for those involved or interested in military chaplaincy, it has a broader appeal, as the issues discussed are relevant to all areas of chaplaincy: healthcare, institutional, public service, campus, and marketplace.

Download or read book The Wall of Separation written by Frank Joseph Sorauf and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of some of the most anguished constitutional controversies of our time, those involving the issue of separation of church and state. Few questions stimulated debate as intense as that over prayer in public schools and public aid to parochial schools. In contrast to previous studies, which have focused on the substance of the issues, Frank J. Sorauf's book concentrates on the judicial process in its social and political context. The author discusses all sixty-seven cases in this area of litigation decided by high American appellate courts from 1951 to 1971. He has interviewed the plaintiffs, attorneys, and members of the groups bringing suit, and describes their strategies and goals, their successes and failures. The community context in which the cases developed, as well as the judges and the courts deciding them, is described and analyzed. Originally published in 1976. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
