Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Civilization an Introduction to Modern History The purpose of this book is indicated on the title page. It is written to meet the needs of classes which can devote only a brief amount of time to the study of Ancient History before taking up the study of Medieval and Modern History. The "Committee of Five" of the American Historical Association recommends "that if it seems wise to omit any detailed study of ancient history and to give three years substantially to the other three blocks, the teacher, while omitting all detail, may still attempt to give his pupils some idea of the growth of the ancient nations, and some idea of their achievements and their qualities." With this aim in view, only such details of the political history of antiquity have been here included as are necessary for an understanding of ancient civilization. Furthermore, only such elements of the life of the people of antiquity have been emphasized as arc necessary for a thorough comprehension of the history of Western Europe in modern times. The book is written especially for the use of pupils in the first or second year of the high school course. The point of view of boys and girls fifteen or sixteen years old has therefore been kept in mind in the selection of details and in the wording and arrangement of the text; and also in the choice of maps and illustrations. The maps arc adequate for making clear the geographical references in the text. Several large pictures have been made to illustrate the text - an object seldom attained by the illustrations in ancient histories. These pictures are carefully designed to arouse the imagination of the readers, and to assist them in realizing the conditions of life in ancient times. Acknowledgment is due to Mr. Morris C. Deshel, teacher of history in the DeWitt Clinton High School, for his assistance in getting together the material for this textbook, and for the preparation of the references given under the Search Topics. For helpful criticisms, also, the author's thanks are due to the history teachers in the DeWitt Clinton High School and in the Julia Richman High School. Book excerpt: In the tradition of his own bestselling masterpieces The Story of Civilization and The Lessons of History, Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Will Durant traces the lives and ideas of those who have helped to define civilization, from its dawn to the beginning of the modern world. Heroes of History is a book of life-enhancing wisdom and optimism, complete with Durant's wit, knowledge, and unique ability to explain events and ideas in simple, exciting terms. It is the lessons of our heritage passed on for the edification and benefit of future generations—a fitting legacy from America's most beloved historian and philosopher. Will Durant's popularity as America's favorite teacher of history and philosophy remains undiminished by time. His books are accessible to readers of every kind, and his unique ability to compress complicated ideas and events into a few pages without ever "talking down" to the reader, enhanced by his memorable wit and a razor-sharp judgment about men and their motives, made all of his books huge bestsellers. Heroes of History carries on this tradition of making scholarship and philosophy understandable to the general reader, and making them good reading, as well. At the dawn of a new millennium and the beginning of a new century, nothing could be more appropriate than this brilliant book that examines the meaning of human civilization and history and draws from the experience of the past the lessons we need to know to put the future into context and live in confidence, rather than fear and ignorance.

Book excerpt: Ancient Civilizations offers a comprehensive and straightforward account of the world’s first civilizations and how they were discovered, drawing on many avenues of inquiry including archaeological excavations, surveys, laboratory work, highly specialized scientific investigations, and both historical and ethnohistorical records. This book covers the earliest civilizations and the great powers in the Near East, moving on to the first Aegean civilizations, the Mediterranean world in the first millennium, Imperial Rome, northeast Africa, the divine kings in southeast Asia, and empires in East Asia, as well as early states in the Americas and Andean civilization. Ancient Civilizations includes a number of features to support student learning: a wealth of images, including several new illustrations; feature boxes which expand on key sites, finds and written sources; and an extensive guide to further reading. With new perceptions of the origin and collapse of states, including a review of the issue of sustainability, this fourth edition has been extensively updated in the light of spectacular new discoveries and the latest theoretical advances. Examining the world’s pre-industrial civilizations from a multidisciplinary perspective and offering a comparative analysis of the field which explores the connections between all civilizations around the world, Scarre and Fagan, both established authorities on world prehistory, provide a valuable introduction to pre-industrial civilizations in all their brilliant diversity.

Book excerpt: A Concise History of Western Civilization: From Prehistoric to Early Modern Times: Third Edition By: Gary Forsythe This volume is designed to serve as the textbook for an undergraduate college course that surveys the history of Western Civilization up to the Early Modern Period. It differs from most Western Civilization books in that it places more emphasis on the ancient world and less on the Middle Ages. It treats the ancient Near Eastern civilizations with a view to understanding the historical context of ancient Judaism and the Hebrew Bible, and it also stresses the political thought and institutions of the ancient Greeks and Romans, which have been so important in shaping the political institutions of many modern nations worldwide. The text is a straightforward textbook of basic historical information and represents the content of the author's class lectures in his course on Western Civilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Civilization: A Textbook for Secondary Schools A great deal more attention is being given to social history and the life of the people of the past than was formerly the case. A great deal less is being given, except by classical students, to the history of Greece and Rome. This book aims to meet the need of schools that desire a short ancient history text, to the time of Charlemagne, which shall not be chiefly a narrative of events. It deals primarily with human progress. It devotes especial attention to great movements, to important leaders, to the life of the people and to the civilization of different periods. Although it is not always easy to trace the records of the "dim silent masses," this social history seems to be worth more than the annals of courts or of conquerors. As far as possible, the author has tried to keep in mind three things: (1) the importance of any change as a part of the development of ancient civilization; (2) the connection between these changes and modern life; and (3) the interest and capacity of the student in the high school. He has tried to give a correct impression of events and changes rather than to describe them with literal accuracy, as literal accuracy is impossible in so brief an account. Even if it were not impossible, it would be undesirable, for an exact, detailed account would render obscure the character and the meaning of the movement under consideration. Brief and general as is this survey of a very broad field, the author hopes that he may have made the subject interesting as well as intelligible.
