Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT may be well at the outset to say clearly what is the aim of the present volume. The title is Ancient Art and Ritual, but the reader will find in it no general summary or even outline of the facts of either ancient art or ancient ritual. These facts are easily accessible in handbooks. The point of my title and the real gist of my argument lie perhaps in the word "and"--that is, in the intimate connection which I have tried to show exists between ritual and art. This connection has, I believe, an important bearing on questions vital to-day, as, for example, the question of the place of art in our modern civilization, its relation to and its difference from religion and morality; in a word, on the whole enquiry as to what the nature of art is and how it can help or hinder spiritual life.

Book excerpt: Ancient Art and Ritual, by British classical scholar and linguist, Jane Ellen Harrison, was originally published in 1913. The work is a scholarly look at how man has dealt with rituals throughout history in order mark new life, changes in season, or rites of passage. Whether they were dance or song, in an attempt to propitiate the gods, in order that they show mercy, healing, or abundance. Harrison demonstrates how these ancient rituals evolved into art forms like chorus, dance, sculpture, and drama. Harrison also focuses on the emotional transference, and high mental expenditure of art forms, believing that when man is in times of trouble, the art work becomes deeply expressive and participatory similar to ritual behaviour.

Book excerpt: THE title of this book may strike the reader as strange and even dissonant. What haveart and ritual to do together? The ritualist is, to the modern mind, a man concernedperhaps unduly with fixed forms and ceremonies, with carrying out the rigidly prescribedordinances of a church or sect. The artist, on the other hand, we think of as free inthought and untrammelled by convention in practice; his tendency is towards licence.Art and ritual, it is quite true, have diverged to-day; but the title of this book is chosenadvisedly. Its object is to show that these two divergent developments have a commonroot, and that neither can be understood without the other. It is at the outset one and thesame impulse that sends a man to church and to the theatre.Such a statement may sound to-day paradoxical, even irreverent. But to the Greek ofthe sixth, fifth, and even fourth century B.C., it would have been a simple truism. Weshall see this best by following an Athenian to his theatre, on the day of the great SpringFestival of Dionysos.
Book Synopsis Northrop Frye's Notebooks for Anatomy of Critcism by : Northrop Frye
Download or read book Northrop Frye's Notebooks for Anatomy of Critcism written by Northrop Frye and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northrop Frye's Anatomy of Criticism (1957) is widely regarded as a masterpiece of literary theory. The product of years of reading and reflection, the book's value extends far beyond its impact on criticism as a whole; ultimately, it must be viewed as a synoptic defense of liberal learning by one of the twentieth century's most distinguished critics. In this, the twenty-third volume of the Collected Works, editor Robert D. Denham presents the notebooks to the Anatomy, blue-prints, as it were, for Frye's comprehensive account of literary conventions. Composed from the late 1940s to 1956, the notebooks document the struggle Frye underwent to provide a structure for his work. This involved incorporating previously published essays and developing new material that would maintain the continuity of his argument. This fully annotated volume contains seventeen holograph notebooks, each illuminating some aspect of the grand structure that eventually emerged. Altogether, the notebooks offer an intimate picture of Frye's working process and a renewed appreciation for his magisterial accomplishment.

Chang builds an impressive counterargument, one which ranges widely from recent archaeological discoveries to studies of mythology, ancient Chinese poetry, and the iconography of Shang food vessels.
