Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human body is an immensely complex and amazing system, but sometimes something goes haywire and causes one or more of its vital elements to misfire, resulting in bizarre and often devastating anatomical anomalies. Such physical abnormalities in times past often meant that the affected individuals would be stigmatized and shunned from the rest of society, primarily out of fear of the unknown. Thankfully, modern science and modern medicine working together have been able to solve many of these physical problems so that the currently afflicted can lead relatively normal lives. The general public has also grown more knowledgeable about the physical disfigurements that plague the human race and has thus become much more accepting of the pain and hardship faced on a daily basis by those so challenged. Extreme physical deformities are not viewed in the same light today as they were 100, or even 50, years ago. The very real people who once would have been the spectacles flaunted at freak shows are today shown understanding. Regardless of the modern times we enjoy, rare cases of physical abnormalities still persist that are so extreme little can be done to ameliorate the deformity.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Muscle Variations and Anomalies in Humans by : Eve K. Boyle
Download or read book Handbook of Muscle Variations and Anomalies in Humans written by Eve K. Boyle and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most textbooks and atlases of human anatomy chronicle only a few cases of muscle variations in the "normal" human population, or of muscle anomalies within congenital malformations. Consequently, there is a misconception of what is considered "normal" human anatomy and what that looks like. Each person within the "normal" population has at least a few muscle variations, and there are millions of individuals born globally each year with muscle anomalies. There are crucial knowledge gaps between what is taught, what students learn, what textbooks and atlases show, and what truly happens in nature and within our species. This handbook fills this gap by: 1) providing a comparative evolutionary context for muscle variations and defects in humans, 2) summarizing the major types of variations and anomalies found in humans, and 3) including didactic figures for a visually engaging learning experience. This book is of interest to students, professors, and researchers in biological anthropology, comparative anatomy, functional morphology, zoology, and evolutionary and developmental biology, as well as to clinicians and practicing health professionals. Key Features Summarizes most recorded variations and anomalies for each muscle in the human body Provides information on the comparative anatomy of each muscle, including evolutionary differences from our closest living relatives, the apes Includes didactic illustrations of the variations and anomalies for a visually engaging learning experience Comprehensively reviews literature to document prevalence information for each variation and anomaly, within humans Related Titles Brown, D. Presented in a simple, accessible format and organized by anatomical area, this book contains all the essential topics required by trainees and practitioners to assess the patient quickly, diagnose anatomic anomalies, determine the feasibility and safety of the planned surgical and anesthetic procedures, and arrange for advanced consults and care, if needed. Newer techniques for surgical and anesthetic management of patients with anatomic anomalies are presented to facilitate practitioners’ development of their skills. Chapters include the latest ultrasound techniques and images, as well as case studies. Physicians, nurses, and trainees involved in the surgical, anesthetic, perioperative, or critical care of patients will find this guide to be their go-to resource in the OR, lab, or pain clinic.

Book excerpt: At the center of this interdisciplinary study are court monsters--dwarves, hirsutes, and misshapen individuals--who, by their very presence, altered Renaissance ethics vis-a-vis anatomical difference, social virtues, and scientific knowledge. The study traces how these monsters evolved from objects of curiosity, to scientific cases, to legally independent beings. The works examined here point to the intricate cultural, religious, ethical, and scientific perceptions of monstrous individuals who were fixtures in contemporary courts.
