Book excerpt: This book reviews the history, current state of knowledge, and different research approaches and techniques of studies on interactions between humans and plants in an important area of agriculture and ongoing plant domestication: Mesoamerica. Leading scholars and key research groups in Mexico discuss essential topics as well as contributions from international research groups that have conducted studies on ethnobotany and domestication of plants in the region. Such a convocation will produce an interesting discussion about future investigation and conservation of regional human cultures, genetic resources, and cultural and ecological processes that are critical for global sustainability.
Book Synopsis Commercial Foreign Woods on the American Market by : David Alson Kribs
Download or read book Commercial Foreign Woods on the American Market written by David Alson Kribs and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written to provide a general reference to commercial foreign woods on the American market and to clear up, if possible, the existing confusion concerning trade names for timbers imported into the United States. Standardization of trade names for timbers imported into the United States would eliminate much of the confusion that exists. The commercial names listed by the author in this book are those that seem to have been widely adopted in general use. At the present time, wood identification is as important to the industry as the physical and mechanical properties. Photographs were taken by the author.

Book Synopsis Atlas of Wood, Bark and Pith Anatomy of Eastern Mediterranean Trees and Shrubs by : Alan Crivellaro
Download or read book Atlas of Wood, Bark and Pith Anatomy of Eastern Mediterranean Trees and Shrubs written by Alan Crivellaro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas presents anatomical descriptions of the xylem, bark and pith of 264 species belonging to 71 families. It highlights the anatomical diversity of trees, shrubs, dwarf shrubs, woody lianas and several of the prominent perennial herbs from the Eastern Mediterranean region, with a focus on the island of Cyprus. The island’s topography and biogeographic history combine to provide a wide range of habitats and diverse flora including widespread, endemic, and ornamental species. The monograph for each species includes a description of the anatomical structures of the stem and twig xylem and the twig’s bark and pith, as well as color micrographs of double-stained sections of each of these plant parts. These entries are accompanied by a photograph and a brief description of the plant including stem wood density, height, habit, flower, leaf and fruit characteristics, and a map showing its geographic and altitudinal distribution in the region. Xylem descriptions follow the IAWA lists of microscopic features for hardwood and softwood identification. For bark and pith descriptions, a new coding system developed by the authors is applied. Lastly, the work offers a key for wood identification that was developed to differentiate between groups of species by using a small number of features that are unambiguous and clearly visible. The atlas will be a valuable guide for botanists, ecologists, foresters, archeologists, horticulturists and paleobotanists.

Book Synopsis Measuring Landscapes by : Andre Botequilha Leitao
Download or read book Measuring Landscapes written by Andre Botequilha Leitao and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook bridges the gap between those scientists who study landscapes and the planners and conservationists who must then decide how best to preserve and build environmentally-sound habitats. Until now, only a small portion of the relevant science has influenced the decision-making arenas where the future of our landscapes is debated and decided. The authors explain specific tools and concepts to measure a landscape's structure, form, and change over time. Metrics studied include patch richness, class area proportion, patch number and density, mean patch size, shape, radius of gyration, contagion, edge contrast, nearest neighbor distance, and proximity. These measures will help planners and conservationists make better land use decisions for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide focuses on the identification of Surinamese trees, based on field, vegetative, floristic, and wood characteristics. It includes botanical descriptions, wood descriptions, illustrations and photos of one hundred Surinamese commercial timber tree species, potential timber tree species, and tree species protected by Surinamese forest law. It is the first book for Suriname with more than four hundred photos to illustrate the characteristics of each tree species for easy identification in the field. The guide is intended for anyone interested in learning and identifying Surinamese timber trees, particularly for the Surinamese forest organizations and different timber companies in Suriname. While this guide focuses on Suriname, many of these species can be found in the adjacent countries of Guyana and French Guiana as well, or have a neotropical distribution, allowing the book to be applicable across the entire region.

Book Synopsis Tropical Timbers of the World by : Martin Chudnoff
Download or read book Tropical Timbers of the World written by Martin Chudnoff and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades U.S. lumber imports from the tropics have increased fourfold. Plywood trade, mostly from Asian sources, has soared forty-fold and now equals our domestic production. Log imports, though, have decreased drastically from about 100 million board feet (log scale) in the 1950's to 30 million currently. Much of the world timber trade now is in the form of processed material. Many more tropical wood species and species groupings are being made available to U.S. processors. Most of these have been well known for many years on the European markets. This interest in supplemental supplies from overseas is in both softwoods and hardwoods. An extensive foreign literature has described the properties and uses of tropical woods, but much of it is no longer readily available. In this country the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, over the years, issued 'Information Leaflets' or 'Foreign Wood Series' reports on some species of importance. But many of these are now out of print. The most recent comprehensive document, 'Properties of Imported Tropical Woods, ' contained a description of about 100 tropical genera.
