Book excerpt: "For millennia, walled cities have served both as residences for rulers and military forces and as sacred centers embodying the power of the elite. The outcome of a symposium organized by Koç University's Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, the essays in this volume are by leading scholars on the area that is now Turkey, from the first millennium BC through the fourteenth century AD. They examine the phenomenon of citadels in a comparative perspective in Anatolia and neighboring regions. Archaeology, art history, and history are brought to bear on the phenomenon of the citadel in its urban context"--

Book Synopsis Neolithic in Turkey by : Nezih Başgelen
Download or read book Neolithic in Turkey written by Nezih Başgelen and published by Arkeoloji Ve Sanat Yayinlari. This book was released on 1999 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Neolithic in Turkey, Nezih Basgelen brings to us another important archaeological synthesis. This work is a timely, well-written, and well-illustrated introduction to the latest research on the earliest farmers and herders to live in the diverse environments of Turkey. From the southeastern foothills of Anatolia, through the valleys of the Anti-Taurus and Taurus, the high arid basins of the central plateau, the mountain-girt lakes and valleys of the Aegean hinterlands, and to the plains of Thrace, a wealth of early communities is presented. Both specialists and the interested general public willi value the maps, plans, and artifact illustrations which show the earliest known village at Hallan Cemi, the surprising early ritual centers at Nevali Cori and Gobekli Tepe, and prosperous early settlements-many larger and more complex than we expect in village societies-such as Cafer Hoyuk, Asikli, Catal Hoyuk, and others. If, as the scientific editor, Mehmet Özdoğan, rightly emphasizes in his concluding remarks, much remains to be done, this work surely shows how much has been accomplished during the past two decades. Download or read book Amorium written by Chris S. Lightfoot and published by Ege Yayinlari. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These archaeological guides are written by well known archaeologists with the thought that they might evoke the spirit of these places for those who are interested in remains of Anatolian civilizations. Illustrated with beautiful photographs, equipped with helpful plans and drawings, they are essential to travellers to Turkey. In 1836 William Hamilton identified the site of Amorium and provided the first description of the ancient ruins. "We reached the deserted and dreary site of what was once a populous city...Near the centre of the valley in which the ruins are situated... is an insulated hill about half a mile in circumference, on which may still be traced a portion of the walls of an Acropolis... The principal part of the town is to the S. and W. of the Acropolis... These ruins...appear chiefly to date from the early Byzantine or Christian period..., marking the existence of one of those large and important towns which were destroyed in this part of Asia Minor by the irruptions of the Saracens and the Seljukian monarchs of Iconium." Much of what Hamilton described has now disappeared, but since 1988 the Amorium Excavation Project has been able to reveal other ruins that testify to the accuracy of his assessment of Amorium as an important Roman and Byzantine city. This guidebook aims to give an interim account of the on-going excavations and set the site in its proper historical context. Book jacket.
