Book excerpt: At the height of their power in the late eleventh century, the Chaco Anasazi dominated a territory in the American Southwest larger than any European principality of the time. A vast and powerful alliance of thousands of farming hamlets and nearly 100 spectacular towns integrated the region through economic and religious ties, and the whole system was interconnected with hundreds of miles of roads. It took these Anasazi farmers more than seven centuries to lay the agricultural, organizational, and technological groundwork for the creation of classic Chacoan civilization, which lasted about 200 years--only to collapse spectacularly in a mere 40. Why did such a great society collapse? Who survived? Why? In this lively book anthropologist/archaeologist David Stuart presents answers to these questions that offer useful lessons to modern societies. His account of the rise and fall of the Chaco Anasazi brings to life the people known to us today as the architects of Chaco Canyon, the spectacular national park in New Mexico that thousands of tourists visit every year.

Book excerpt: When Richard Wetherill and his brother-in-law Charlie Mason were following cow tracks up Chapin Mesa they never expected to see what lay ahead of them through the snow flurries, a cave totally filled with houses which they later named Cliff Palace The next day they discovered Spruce Tree House and Square Tower House. This area which is now part of Mesa Verde National Park is well known for the sheer beauty of its archaeological ruins. For hundreds of years the geography of Mesa Verde has acted as a canopy protecting the remains of its ancient sites. What happened to the Anasazi is still speculation but some new views of the disappearance of the Anasazi are discussed here. Now available to the general public, this guide is comprehensive enough for the serious beginner or the seasoned expert.... the volume edited by David Noble offers a series of detailed essays on the people who built the pueblos of the Mesa Verde region .... -- Los Angles Times

Book excerpt: "The two reports published here contain elements which contribute substantially to this broader spectrum of Southwestern cultural change. While primarily descriptive in nature, these two site reports, one from the western Kayenta area and one from the margin of the Mesa Verde area and the eastern Kayenta, suggest that the changes which occurred in the more centralized portions of these regions were directly related to what happened on the margins. That, while the site densities and population aggregates may not have been as high, the same factors affected these marginal areas. That conclusion could be expected, but what may not be expected is the differential response which appears to have occurred. After reading these two reports, it appears that it may be possible to discern elements of change in these fringe areas that, once defined, will provide new insight into what happened and why and in what are presently the better known areas of the Southwest. These two papers are important, in sum, not only because they are reports of work in poorly known areas, but because they do provide analyses of fringe areas, they help us to understand the Southwest generally"--From preliminary introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The national parks and monuments in Colorado harbor some of the most diverse and awe-inspiring scenery on the planet. They contain immense mountain peaks rising over 14,000 feet high, spectacular Anasazi ruins constructed 1,000 years ago, and deep canyons plunging 2,000 feet down to raging rivers. They also possess the largest sand dunes in North America, immense sandstone rock formations rising over 500 feet high, and some of the largest petrified Sequoia trees in the world. Renowned photographer Grant Collier has spent several years exploring and photographing Colorado's national parks and monuments. He has hiked in predawn light across Rocky Mountain National Park, driven over remote jeep trails in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, and rafted nearly every mile of river within Dinosaur National Monument. In the process, he has produced the first comprehensive portrait of Colorado's current system of national parks and monuments.

Book excerpt: Imagine the North American Indians as astronomers carefully watching the heavens, charting the sun through the seasons, or counting the sunrises between successive lumar phases. Then imagine them establishing observational sites and codified systems to pass their knowledge down through the centuries and continually refine it. A few years ago such images would have been abruptly dismissed. Today we are wiser. Living the Sky describes the exciting archaeoastronomical discoveries in the United States in recent decades. Using history, science, and direct observation, Ray A. Williamson transports the reader into the sky world of the Indians. We visit the Bighorn Medicine Wheel, sit with a Zuni sun priest on the winter solstice, join explorers at the rites of the Hopis and the Navajos, and trek to Chaco Canyon to make direct on-site observations of celestial events.

Book excerpt: Following in the wake of what one noted scientist called 'transients who neither revered nor cared for the ruins as symbols of the past, ' the Wetherill family became the earliest students of Mesa Verde. Their careful excavations and record-keeping helped preserve key information, leading to a deeper understanding of the people who built and occupied the cliff dwellings. As devout Quakers, they felt they were predestined to protect the historic sites from wanton destruction - a role that would not be assumed by the government or other institutions until years later. Based on decades of meticulous research, author Fred Blackburn sets the record straight on these early protectors of Mesa Verde.

Book excerpt: For half a century, beginning in the early 1960s, Vaughn Short walked, horse-packed, and floated the canyons and mesas of the Southwest. Along the way, stories and poems grew in his mind. Around evening campfires, he shared these pearls with those lucky enough to be in his company. Vaughn Short was our Robert Service, the Poet Lauriat of canyon country. Although Vaughn has moved on, his books of poetry connect us to an earlier time before passage through these areas became common.
