Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the clashes, complexities, and political personalities of world politics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Peter Kropotkin stands out. Born a prince in Tsarist Russia and sent to Siberia to learn his militaristic, aristocratic trade, he instead renounced his titles and took up the “beautiful idea” of anarchism. Across a continent he would become known as a passionate advocate of a world without borders, without kings and bosses. From a Russian cell to France, to London and Brighton, he used his extraordinary mind to dissect the birth of State power and then present a different vision, one in which the human impulse to liberty can be found throughout history, undying even in times of defeat. In the three essays presented here, Kropotkin attempted to distill his many insights into brief but brilliant essays on the state, anarchism, and the ideology for which he became a founding name—anarchist communism. With a detailed and rich introduction from Brian Morris, and accompanied by bibliographic notes from Iain McKay, this collection contextualises and contemporises three of Kropotkin’s most influential essays.

His work explains anarchist philosophy in terms that uninitiated readers can understand. The book's chapters are brief, and many of them begin with questions ( "Is Anarchism Violence?", "Will Communist Anarchism Work?"). Because of its presentation of anarchist philosophy in plain language, Now and After has become one of the best-known introductions to anarchism in book format.

Book excerpt: A Critique of Anarchist Communism by Ken Knudson has finally been printed as intended nearly a half-century after it was written. Bill Dwyer, Editor of the British journal Anarchy, commissioned the essay 1971, but the publication went under before it saw print. Libertarian Analysis sought to publish this essay, but the American quarterly also folded just before it was to appear. A mere excerpt was published in The Voluntaryist by Carl Watner in 1983, but the full essay remained unpublished. Svein Olav Nyberg broke the curse in 1992 when he serialized it across twelve issues of his Egoist e-zine Non Serviam. The essay was then published in parts by egoist-feminist Wendy McElroy at her website wendymcelroy.com. A Critique of Anarchist Communism argues that "Anarchist Communism" is a contradiction in terms. Knudson argues as an Egoist Anarchist inspired by the writings of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, William B. Greene, Benjamin R. Tucker and Max Stirner. A Critique of Anarchist Communism opens wide the divide between socialism and individualism. This issue of the Stand Alone journal finally publishes the original essay as a single work, with a new Foreword by Mr. Knudson.

Book excerpt: What is Communist Anarchism? is an introduction to the principles of anarchism and anarchist communism written by Alexander Berkman. First published in 1929 by Vanguard Press, it has been reprinted many times, often in partial or abbreviated versions, under many titles such as Now and After, What Is Anarchism? or The ABC of Anarchism. Because of its presentation of anarchist philosophy in plain language, What is Communist Anarchism? has become one of the best-known introductions to anarchism in print. Anarchist Stuart Christie wrote that What is Communist Anarchism? is "among the best introductions to the ideas of anarchism in the English language". Historian Paul Avrich described it as "a classic" and wrote that it was "the clearest exposition of communist anarchism in English or any other language".

Book excerpt: Manifesto of the Communist Party by Karl Heinrich Marx and Friedrich Engels is a book where, for the first time, the aims, tasks and methods of fight of the emerging communist organisations and parties of the nineteenth century were declared and explained. It is the greatest philosophic and political treatise that is important in some way even nowadays. According to experts, Manifesto is a powerful work that still can be used as a good method to mobilize people. In addition, the work of Marx and Engels will not leave anyone indifferent. Historians noted that this book had been ahead of time. Manifesto definitely opened the eyes and minds of workers and socialists all over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifesto of a 21st Century Anarchist is the written account of a young adult exposed to the radical rhetoric of Anarchism, Nihilism, and Egoisim within the 21st century. The book itself is political theory, which attempts to explain the rational behind Anarchism, exemplify the ideology and begin to explain an Anarchists view of world order, justice, and freedom, and to ultimately reveal some tenants of Anarchism which anyone of any ideological background can rationally begin to understand. Taking a staunch anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian, and anti-populist viewpoint Manifesto of a 21st Century Anarchist attempts to differentiate Anarchism from traditional politics, instead exploring a realm of idealism free from all hierarchy, state, and arbitration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conquest of Bread is a political treatise written by the anarcho-communist philosopher Peter Kropotkin. Written after a split between anarchists and Marxists at the First International (a 19th-century association of left-wing radicals), The Conquest of Bread advocates a path to a communist society distinct from Marx and Engels’s Communist Manifesto, rooted in the principles of mutual aid and voluntary cooperation. Since its original publication in 1892, The Conquest of Bread has immensely influenced both anarchist theory and anarchist praxis. As one of the first comprehensive works of anarcho-communist theory published for wide distribution, it both popularized anarchism in general and encouraged a shift in anarchist thought from individualist anarchism to social anarchism. It was also an influential text among the Spanish anarchists in the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, and the late anarchist theorist and anthropologist David Graeber cited the book as an inspiration for the Occupy movement of the early 2010s in his 2011 book Debt: The First 5,000 Years. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
