Book Synopsis Using Habermas's Theory of Communicative Action to analyze the Changing Nature of School Education in Hong Kong (1945-2008) by : Si-wai Chan
Download or read book Using Habermas's Theory of Communicative Action to analyze the Changing Nature of School Education in Hong Kong (1945-2008) written by Si-wai Chan and published by Red Publish. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book’s discussion is based on Habermas’s Theory of Communicative Action. Jürgen Habermas, is known for his work on the concept of modernity, particularly with respect to the discussions of rationalization originally set forth by Max Weber; arguing it has a limited view of human action. By using and to extend the concept of Habermas’s Theory, Chan handles this book by focusing how social reproduction was possible in school education, how school education was worked in general, and how school education was developed. In this book, Chan states that, “(i)n my personal experience as a secondary school teacher in Hong Kong, I observed that many of my students with little family support were not admitted into higher education. They entered into the job world after completing their secondary studies. I wondered whether, in my own professional work, I had helped, to some extent, to perform such social reproduction.” Moreover, he tries to seek for an answer, “I began to study Habermas’s theory of communicative action, and studied how it could be applied to study the relation between school education and society in Hong Kong, especially in explaining how social reproduction was achieved.” Furthermore, in this book, he attempts to understand the phenomenon of social reproduction through school education, and contributes to the current discussion on how school education could be developed in Hong Kong.

Book Synopsis A Mathematical Model to Analyze the Role of Uncertain and Indeterminate Factors in the Spread of Pandemics like COVID-19 Using Neutrosophy: A Case Study of India by : Aasim Zafar
Download or read book A Mathematical Model to Analyze the Role of Uncertain and Indeterminate Factors in the Spread of Pandemics like COVID-19 Using Neutrosophy: A Case Study of India written by Aasim Zafar and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work using neutrosophic cognitive maps proves mathematically how these indeterminate and unknown factors are responsible for the spread of COVID-19 in India. The Neutrosophic Cognitive Map (NCM) is an enhanced version of Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) since it takes into account the concept of indeterminacy and uncertainty, which is not addressed by FCMs. The obtained results not only show the importance of determinate factors (measures taken by the government bodies) in containing the spread of this deadly virus but also show how indeterminate and uncertain factors such as poverty, negligence, ineffectual healthcare, age, immunity, unscientific practices on religious grounds and illiteracy play a vital role in this regard. This model, in general, helps policymakers and government agencies to represent any complicated situation mathematically thereby helping them in responding appropriately and forming new policies for dealing with such pandemics. This work also signifies how neutrosophic theories can be applied in the analysis of the situation for dealing with real life problems..

Book Synopsis Tone Analysis for Field Linguists by : Keith Snider
Download or read book Tone Analysis for Field Linguists written by Keith Snider and published by SIL International. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tone, the use of pitch to provide phonological contrast between morphemes, plays an integral role in the structures of many languages. This book teaches linguists a tried-and-proven methodology for analyzing tone in any part of the world. Significant features: • Delivers the most comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to tone analysis for field linguists • Emphasizes the discovery of contrastive tone patterns of morphemes, as opposed to contrastive tones of tone-bearing units • Focuses on keeping constant all factors that can potentially affect tone, so that utterances being compared are truly comparable • Includes a chapter on the phonetic properties of pitch • Presents principles for developing orthographies for tone languages • Includes comprehensive accompanying online exercises* that guide students from beginning to end through a complete analysis of nominal tone in a single language, Chumburung. Assuming little prior knowledge of tone or tone languages, Tone Analysis for Field Linguists is readily accessible to students and field workers alike who have previously taken introductory courses in articulatory phonetics, phonology, and morphology and syntax. *Instructors may access the accompanying online exercises. Book Synopsis Large Deviations For Performance Analysis by : Adam Shwartz
Download or read book Large Deviations For Performance Analysis written by Adam Shwartz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-09-01 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of two synergistic parts. The first half develops the theory of large deviations from the beginning (iid random variables) through recent results on the theory for processes with boundaries, keeping to a very narrow path: continuous-time, discrete-state processes. By developing only what is needed for the applications, the theory is kept to a manageable level, both in terms of length and in terms of difficulty. Within its scope, the treatment is detailed, comprehensive and self-contained. As the book shows, there are sufficiently many interesting applications of jump Markov processes to warrant a special treatment. The second half is a collection of applications developed at Bell Laboratories. The applications cover large areas of the theory of communication networks: circuit-switched transmission, packet transmission, multiple access channels, and the M/M/1 queue. Aspects of parallel computation are covered as well: basics of job allocation, rollback-based parallel simulation, assorted priority queueing models that might be used in performance models of various computer architectures, and asymptotic coupling of processors. These applications are thoroughly analyzed using the tools developed in the first half of the book. Features: A transient analysis of the M/M/1 queue; a new analysis of an Aloha model using Markov modulated theory; new results for Erlang's model; new results for the AMS model; analysis of "serve the longer queue", "join the shorter queue" and other simple priority queues; and a simple analysis of the Flatto-Hahn-Wright model of processor-sharing.
