Naumann and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and analytical investigations of the vibratory behavior of ring-stiffened truncated-cone shells are described. Vibration tests were conducted on (1) 60 [degree] conical shells having up to four ring stiffeners and for free-free and clamped-free edge constraints and (2) 90 [degree] conical shells, for two thicknesses, each with two angle rings and for free-free, free-clamped, and clamped-clamped edge constraints. The analytical method is based on linear thin-shell theory, employing the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Discrete rings are represented as composed of one or more segments, each of which is a short truncated-cone shell of uniform thickness. Equations of constraint are used to join a ring and shell along a circumferential line connection. Excellent agreement was obtained for comparisons of experimental and calculated frequencies.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the vibration characteristics of a 60 deg conical shell model of a planetary entry vehicle is described and the results presented. Model configurations include the shell with or without one or two Z-ring stiffeners and with or without a simulated payload. Tests were conducted with the model clamped at the small diameter and with the model suspended at the simulated payload. Additionally, calculated results obtained from application of several analytical procedures reported in the literature are presented together with comparisons between experimental and calculated frequencies and meridional mode shapes. Generally, very good frequency agreement between experimental and calculated results was obtained for all model configurations. For small values of circumferential mode number, however, the frequency agreement decreased as the number of ring stiffeners increased. Overall agreement between experimental and calculated mode shapes was generally good. The calculated modes usually showed much larger curvatures in the vicinity of the rings than were observed in the experimentally measured mode shapes. Dual resonances associated with modal preference were noted for the shell without Z-ring stiffeners, whereas the addition of stiffeners produced resonances for which the model responded in two or more modes over different sections of the shell length.

Book Synopsis Vibration and Aerodynamic Buckling Experiments for Blunt Truncated Conical Shells with Ring-supported Edges by : Robert Miserentino

This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibration and buckling characteristics of a series of 140 deg ring-supported conical shells have been investigated experimentally and analytically. Experimental results were obtained from 14 conical shells, each attached to a solid nose cap at the small end. The large (base) end was either free or attached to a solid ring of rectangular cross section. The size of the solid base rings of rectangular cross section was systematically varied to provide a wide range of edge restraint. Shell buckling was induced by aerodynamic loading at a Mach number of 3; the vibration data were obtained prior to the wind tunnel tests. The experimental vibration data indicated that the size of the base rings had a pronounced effect on the magnitude of the frequencies and on the frequency spectrum. For vibration modes having less than two circumferential waves, the frequencies descreased with increasing ring size; whereas, for modes with several circumferential waves, the frequencies initially increased rapidly with ring size and then became relatively insensitive to further increases in ring size. This latter behavior was similar to the trend exhibited by the variation of buckling pressure with ring size. The experimental results were in excellent qualitative agreement with theoretical results and indicated that current shell-of-revolution analyses are adequate for predicting the vibration and buckling behavior of ring-supported shells, at least for the simple isotropic shells considered in this investigation.
Book Synopsis Design Aids for Stiffened Composite Shells with Cutouts by : Sarmila Sahoo
Download or read book Design Aids for Stiffened Composite Shells with Cutouts written by Sarmila Sahoo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the free vibrations of graphite-epoxy laminated composite stiffened shells with cutout both in terms of the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The dynamic analysis of shell structures, which may have complex geometry and arbitrary loading and boundary conditions, is solved efficiently by the finite element method, even including cutouts in shells. The results may be readily used by practicing engineers dealing with stiffened composite shells with cutouts. Several shell forms viz. cylindrical shell, hypar shell, conoidal shell, spherical shell, saddle shell, hyperbolic paraboloidal shell and elliptic paraboloidal shell are considered in the book. The dynamic characteristics of stiffened composite shells with cutout are described in terms of the natural frequency and mode shapes. The size of the cutouts and their positions with respect to the shell centre are varied for different edge constraints of cross-ply and angle-ply laminated composite shells. The effects of these parametric variations on the fundamental frequencies and mode shapes are considered in detail. The information regarding the behavior of stiffened shells with cutouts for a wide spectrum of eccentricity and boundary conditions for cross ply and angle ply shells may be used as design aids for structural engineers. The book is a significant contribution to the existing literature from the point of view of both industrial importance and academic interest.
