Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Since the invention of the V-2 rocket during World War II, combustion instabilities have been recognized as one of the most difficult problems in the development of liquid propellant rocket engines. This book is the first published in the United States on the subject since NASA's Liquid Rocket Combustion Instability (NASA SP-194) in 1972. In this book, experts cover four major subject areas: engine phenomenology and case studies, fundamental mechanisms of combustion instability, combustion instability analysis, and engine and component testing. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of technical information from Russia and China--a first.

Book excerpt: This is the first book in the literature to cover the development and testing practices for liquid rocket engines in Russia and the former Soviet Union.Combustion instability represents one of the most challenging probelms in the development of propulsion engines. A famous example is the F-1 engines for the first stage of the Saturn V launch vehicles in the Apollo project. More than 2000 full engine tests and a vast number of design modifications were conducted to cure the instability problem. This book contains first-hand information about the testing and development practices for treating liquid rocket combustion-instability problems in Russia and the former Soviet Union. It covers more than 50 years of research, with an emphasis placed on the advances made since 1970.The book was prepared by a former R&D director of the Research Institute of Chemical Engineering, NIICHIMMASH, the largest liquid rocket testing center in the world, and has been carefully edited by three well-known experts in the field.

Book excerpt: This book concentrates on modeling and numerical simulations of combustion in liquid rocket engines, covering liquid propellant atomization, evaporation of liquid droplets, turbulent flows, turbulent combustion, heat transfer, and combustion instability. It presents some state of the art models and numerical methodologies in this area. The book can be categorized into two parts. Part 1 describes the modeling for each subtopic of the combustion process in the liquid rocket engines. Part 2 presents detailed numerical methodology and several representative applications in simulations of rocket engine combustion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report develops a nonlinear model which can be used to predict combustion instability zones in liquid rocket engines. The model is developed by combining a nonlinear instability model with a steady-state vaporization model. Such an analysis determines the zones of an engine in which a tangential mode of high frequency instability is most easily initiated. A rocket engine can be analyzed by incrementally dividing the combustion chamber into annular nodes in the r and z directions. Steady-state properties at each annular node or position in the chamber are computed from the steady-state vaporization computer program. The steady-state program is capable of computing combustion profiles in thermally unstable propellants of the monomethylhydrazine/nitrogen tetroxide type. This model describes droplet vaporization with vapor phase decomposition. Using the computed steady-state properties and the stability limit curves from the instability computer program, stability at each node is determined. This process is repeated for each node to determine a stability map of the entire engine.

Download or read book Combustion Instability. Analytical Survey written by LIBRARY OF CONGRESS WASHINGTON D C AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGY DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid rocket engines are subject to a wide variety of types of combustion instability. The two basic instability modes are 'chugging, ' a low-frequency instability mode which is caused by interaction between the chamber pressure and the injection flow rate fluctuations, and 'screaming, ' a more harmful high-frequency, acoustic instability mode which may lead to burnout of the motor due to increased heat flux. Only two articles on low-frequency instability were found in Soviet open literature. Experimental studies or analyses of high-frequency instability which take into account actual engine operation, i.e., mixing, evaporation, dissociation fuel atomization, etc., were not found in the literature surveyed. However, several theoretical studies were found which deal with highfrequency instability under idealized conditions. The majority of the Soviet studies included in this report deal with the interaction of shock and pressure waves with the flame front. These studies are of high phenomenological interest and are indirectly applicable to combustion stability analysis. (Author).
Book Synopsis Stability Analysis of a Liquid Fuel Annular Combustion Chamber by :
Download or read book Stability Analysis of a Liquid Fuel Annular Combustion Chamber written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High frequency combustion instability continues to be a major problem in the development and operation of rocket engines. Most mathematical models simulating this phenomena involve the derivation and solution of complex non- linear differential equations. In an effort to overcome the mathematical difficulties associated with the solution of the nonlinear combustion instability problems, two methods of analysis were developed. In investigating the problems of combustion instability in an annular combustion chamber, a modified Galerkin method was used to produce a set of modal amplitude equations from the general non-linear partial differential acoustic wave equation. From these modal amplitude equations, the two-variable perturbation method was used to develop a set of approximate equations of a given order of magnitude. These equations were modeled to show the effects of velocity sensitve combustion instabilities by evaluating the effects of certain parameters in the given set of equations. From evaluating these effects, one can ascertain which parameters cause instabilities to occur in the combustion chamber. In this analysis, it is assumed that in the annular combustion chamber, the liquid propellants are injected uniformly across the injector face, the combustion processes are distributed throughout the combustion chamber and that no time delay occurs in the combustion processes.
