Book Synopsis Data Analytics and Psychometrics by : Hong Jiao
Download or read book Data Analytics and Psychometrics written by Hong Jiao and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general theme of this book is to encourage the use of relevant methodology in data mining which is or could be applied to the interplay of education, statistics and computer science to solve psychometric issues and challenges in the new generation of assessments. In addition to item response data, other data collected in the process of assessment and learning will be utilized to help solve psychometric challenges and facilitate learning and other educational applications. Process data include those collected or available for collection during the process of assessment and instructional phase such as responding sequence data, log files, the use of help features, the content of web searches, etc. Some book chapters present the general exploration of process data in large-scale assessment. Further, other chapters also address how to integrate psychometrics and learning analytics in assessment and survey, how to use data mining techniques for security and cheating detection, how to use more assessment results to facilitate student’s learning and guide teacher’s instructional efforts. The book includes both theoretical and methodological presentations that might guide the future in this area, as well as illustrations of efforts to implement big data analytics that might be instructive to those in the field of learning and psychometrics. The context of the effort is diverse, including K-12, higher education, financial planning, and survey utilization. It is hoped that readers can learn from different disciplines, especially those who are specialized in assessment, would be critical to expand the ideas of what we can do with data analytics for informing assessment practices.

Book Synopsis Data Analytics Applications in Education by : Jan Vanthienen
Download or read book Data Analytics Applications in Education written by Jan Vanthienen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of data and the rise of new quantitative and statistical techniques have created a promising area: data analytics. This combination of a culture of data-driven decision making and techniques to include domain knowledge allows organizations to exploit big data analytics in their evaluation and decision processes. Also, in education and learning, big data analytics is being used to enhance the learning process, to evaluate efficiency, to improve feedback, and to enrich the learning experience. As every step a student takes in the online world can be traced, analyzed, and used, there are plenty of opportunities to improve the learning process of students. First, data analytics techniques can be used to enhance the student’ s learning process by providing real-time feedback, or by enriching the learning experience. Second, data analytics can be used to support the instructor or teacher. Using data analytics, the instructor can better trace, and take targeted actions to improve, the learning process of the student. Third, there are possibilities in using data analytics to measure the performance of instructors. Finally, for policy makers, it is often unclear how schools use their available resources to "produce" outcomes. By combining structured and unstructured data from various sources, data analytics might provide a solution for governments that aim to monitor the performance of schools more closely. Data analytics in education should not be the domain of a single discipline. Economists should discuss the possibilities, issues, and normative questions with a multidisciplinary team of pedagogists, philosophers, computer scientists, and sociologists. By bringing together various disciplines, a more comprehensive answer can be formulated to the challenges ahead. This book starts this discussion by highlighting some economic perspectives on the use of data analytics in education. The book begins a rich, multidisciplinary discussion that may make data analytics in education seem as natural as a teacher in front of a classroom.

Book Synopsis Testing Teacher Candidates by : National Research Council
Download or read book Testing Teacher Candidates written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-11-19 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have adopted a reform agenda for their schools that calls for excellence in teaching and learning. School officials across the nation are hard at work targeting instruction at high levels for all students. Gaps remain, however, between the nation's educational aspirations and student achievement. To address these gaps, policy makers have recently focused on the qualifications of teachers and the preparation of teacher candidates. This book examines the appropriateness and technical quality of teacher licensure tests currently in use, evaluates the merits of using licensure test results to hold states and institutions of higher education accountable for the quality of teacher preparation and licensure, and suggests alternatives for developing and assessing beginning teacher competence. Teaching is a complex activity. Definitions of quality teaching have changed and will continue to change over time as society's values change. This book provides policy makers, teacher testers, and teacher educators with advice on how to use current tests to assess teacher candidates and evaluate teacher preparation, ensuring that America's youth are being taught by the most qualified candidates.
Book Synopsis Scientific Research in Education by : National Research Council
Download or read book Scientific Research in Education written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-03-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers, historians, and philosophers of science have debated the nature of scientific research in education for more than 100 years. Recent enthusiasm for "evidence-based" policy and practice in educationâ€"now codified in the federal law that authorizes the bulk of elementary and secondary education programsâ€"have brought a new sense of urgency to understanding the ways in which the basic tenets of science manifest in the study of teaching, learning, and schooling. Scientific Research in Education describes the similarities and differences between scientific inquiry in education and scientific inquiry in other fields and disciplines and provides a number of examples to illustrate these ideas. Its main argument is that all scientific endeavors share a common set of principles, and that each fieldâ€"including education researchâ€"develops a specialization that accounts for the particulars of what is being studied. The book also provides suggestions for how the federal government can best support high-quality scientific research in education.

Book Synopsis Applied Survey Data Analysis by : Steven G. Heeringa
Download or read book Applied Survey Data Analysis written by Steven G. Heeringa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a practical approach that draws on the authors’ extensive teaching, consulting, and research experiences, Applied Survey Data Analysis provides an intermediate-level statistical overview of the analysis of complex sample survey data. It emphasizes methods and worked examples using available software procedures while reinforcing the principles and theory that underlie those methods. After introducing a step-by-step process for approaching a survey analysis problem, the book presents the fundamental features of complex sample designs and shows how to integrate design characteristics into the statistical methods and software for survey estimation and inference. The authors then focus on the methods and models used in analyzing continuous, categorical, and count-dependent variables; event history; and missing data problems. Some of the techniques discussed include univariate descriptive and simple bivariate analyses, the linear regression model, generalized linear regression modeling methods, the Cox proportional hazards model, discrete time models, and the multiple imputation analysis method. The final chapter covers new developments in survey applications of advanced statistical techniques, including model-based analysis approaches. Designed for readers working in a wide array of disciplines who use survey data in their work, this book also provides a useful framework for integrating more in-depth studies of the theory and methods of survey data analysis. A guide to the applied statistical analysis and interpretation of survey data, it contains many examples and practical exercises based on major real-world survey data sets. Although the authors use Stata for most examples in the text, they offer SAS, SPSS, SUDAAN, R, WesVar, IVEware, and Mplus software code for replicating the examples on the book’s website: http://www.isr.umich.edu/src/smp/asda/
