Book excerpt: This book studies some of the groundbreaking advances that have been made regarding analytic capacity and its relationship to rectifiability in the decade 1995–2005. The Cauchy transform plays a fundamental role in this area and is accordingly one of the main subjects covered. Another important topic, which may be of independent interest for many analysts, is the so-called non-homogeneous Calderón-Zygmund theory, the development of which has been largely motivated by the problems arising in connection with analytic capacity. The Painlevé problem, which was first posed around 1900, consists in finding a description of the removable singularities for bounded analytic functions in metric and geometric terms. Analytic capacity is a key tool in the study of this problem. In the 1960s Vitushkin conjectured that the removable sets which have finite length coincide with those which are purely unrectifiable. Moreover, because of the applications to the theory of uniform rational approximation, he posed the question as to whether analytic capacity is semiadditive. This work presents full proofs of Vitushkin’s conjecture and of the semiadditivity of analytic capacity, both of which remained open problems until very recently. Other related questions are also discussed, such as the relationship between rectifiability and the existence of principal values for the Cauchy transforms and other singular integrals. The book is largely self-contained and should be accessible for graduate students in analysis, as well as a valuable resource for researchers.

Book excerpt: The 2-volume-book is an updated, reorganized and considerably enlarged version of the previous edition of the Research Problem Book in Analysis (LNM 1043), a collection familiar to many analysts, that has sparked off much research. This new edition, created in a joint effort by a large team of analysts, is, like its predecessor, a collection of unsolved problems of modern analysis designed as informally written mini-articles, each containing not only a statement of a problem but also historical and metho- dological comments, motivation, conjectures and discussion of possible connections, of plausible approaches as well as a list of references. There are now 342 of these mini- articles, almost twice as many as in the previous edition, despite the fact that a good deal of them have been solved!

Book excerpt: The theory of General Relativity, after its invention by Albert Einstein, remained for many years a monument of mathemati cal speculation, striking in its ambition and its formal beauty, but quite separated from the main stream of modern Physics, which had centered, after the early twenties, on quantum mechanics and its applications. In the last ten or fifteen years, however, the situation has changed radically. First, a great deal of significant exper~en tal data became available. Then important contributions were made to the incorporation of general relativity into the framework of quantum theory. Finally, in the last three years, exciting devel opments took place which have placed general relativity, and all the concepts behind it, at the center of our understanding of par ticle physics and quantum field theory. Firstly, this is due to the fact that general relativity is really the "original non-abe lian gauge theory," and that our description of quantum field in teractions makes extensive use of the concept of gauge invariance. Secondly, the ideas of supersymmetry have enabled theoreticians to combine gravity with other elementary particle interactions, and to construct what is perhaps the first approach to a more finite quantum theory of gravitation, which is known as super gravity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric Function Theory is that part of Complex Analysis which covers the theory of conformal and quasiconformal mappings. Beginning with the classical Riemann mapping theorem, there is a lot of existence theorems for canonical conformal mappings. On the other side there is an extensive theory of qualitative properties of conformal and quasiconformal mappings, concerning mainly a prior estimates, so called distortion theorems (including the Bieberbach conjecture with the proof of the Branges). Here a starting point was the classical Scharz lemma, and then Koebe's distortion theorem. There are several connections to mathematical physics, because of the relations to potential theory (in the plane). The Handbook of Geometric Function Theory contains also an article about constructive methods and further a Bibliography including applications eg: to electroxtatic problems, heat conduction, potential flows (in the plane). · A collection of independent survey articles in the field of GeometricFunction Theory · Existence theorems and qualitative properties of conformal and quasiconformal mappings · A bibliography, including many hints to applications in electrostatics, heat conduction, potential flows (in the plane).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to cover some of the salient features of classical, one variable complex function theory. The approach is analytic, as opposed to geometric, but the methods of all three of the principal schools (those of Cauchy, Riemann and Weierstrass) are developed and exploited. The book goes deeply into several topics (e.g. convergence theory and plane topology), more than is customary in introductory texts, and extensive chapter notes give the sources of the results, trace lines of subsequent development, make connections with other topics, and offer suggestions for further reading. These are keyed to a bibliography of over 1,300 books and papers, for each of which volume and page numbers of a review in one of the major reviewing journals is cited. These notes and bibliography should be of considerable value to the expert as well as to the novice. For the latter there are many references to such thoroughly accessible journals as the American Mathematical Monthly and L'Enseignement Mathématique. Moreover, the actual prerequisites for reading the book are quite modest; for example, the exposition assumes no prior knowledge of manifold theory, and continuity of the Riemann map on the boundary is treated without measure theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for a wide range of readers, this book covers the main ideas of convex analysis and approximation theory. The author discusses the sources of these two trends in mathematical analysis, develops the main concepts and results, and mentions some beautiful theorems. The relationship of convex analysis to optimization problems, to the calculus of variations, to optimal control and to geometry is considered, and the evolution of the ideas underlying approximation theory, from its origins to the present day, is discussed. The book is addressed both to students who want to acquaint themselves with these trends and to lecturers in mathematical analysis, optimization and numerical methods, as well as to researchers in these fields who would like to tackle the topic as a whole and seek inspiration for its further development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a certain sense, subnormal operators were introduced too soon because the theory of function algebras and rational approximation was also in its infancy and could not be properly used to examine the class of operators. The progress in the last several years grew out of applying the results of rational approximation." from the Preface. This book is the successor to the author's 1981 book on the same subject. In addition to reflecting the great strides in the development of subnormal operator theory since the first book, the present work is oriented towards rational functions rather than polynomials. Although the book is a research monograph, it has many of the traits of a textbook including exercises. The book requires background in function theory and functional analysis, but is otherwise fairly self-contained. The first few chapters cover the basics about subnormal operator theory and present a study of analytic functions on the unit disk. Other topics included are: some results on hypernormal operators, an exposition of rational approximation interspersed with applications to operator theory, a study of weak-star rational approximation, a set of results that can be termed structure theorems for subnormal operators, and a proof that analytic bounded point evaluations exist.

[T]he concepts and techniques introduced to deal with these problems [of uniform algebras], such as ``peak points'' and ``parts,'' provide new insights into the classical theory of approximation by analytic functions. In some cases, elegant proofs of old results are obtained by abstract methods. The new concepts also lead to new problems in classical function theory, which serve to enliven and refresh that subject. In short, the relation between functional analysis and the analytic theory is both fascinating and complex, and it serves to enrich and deepen each of the respective disciplines.'' This volume includes a Bibliography, List of Special Symbols, and an Index. Each of the chapters is followed by notes and numerous exercises.
