Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A previously developed two-dimensional local inviscid-viscous interaction technique for the analysis of airfoil transitional separation bubbles, ALESEP (Airfoil Leading Edge Separation), has been extended for the calculation of transitional separation bubbles over infinite swept wings. As part of this effort, Roberts' empirical correlation, which is interpreted as a separated flow empirical extension of Mack's stability theory for attached flows, has been incorporated into the ALESEP procedure for the prediction of the transition location within the separation bubble. In addition, the viscous procedure used in the ALESEP techniques has been modified to allow for wall suction. A series of two-dimensional calculations is presented as a verification of the prediction capability of the interaction techniques with the Roberts' transition model. Numerical tests have shown that this two-dimensional natural transition correlation may also be applied to transitional separation bubbles over infinite swept wings. Results of the interaction procedure are compared with Horton's detailed experimental data for separated flow over a swept plate which demonstrates the accuracy of the present technique. Wall suction has been applied to a similar interaction calculation to demonstrate its effect on the separation bubble. The principal conclusion of this paper is that the prediction of transitional separation bubbles over two-dimensional or infinite swept geometries is now possible using the present interacting boundary layer approach.

Logically organized into three major parts, the book covers pre- and post-transitional flow, transitional flow, and several advanced topics in periodically disturbed transitional flow. Some of the subjects covered within the book include high-frequency unsteady laminar flow, turbulent flow, natural transition, bypass transition, turbulent spot theory, turbulent spot kinematics and production, correlations for the onset and rate of transition, global and conditional averaging, transitional flow models, wakeinduced transition, multimode transition, and separated-flow transition. Containing some 202 figures (all drawn by the author), 28 tables, 12 appendices, a supplement on tensors, and an extensive bibliography, the 415 page book provides a wealth of data and information about the subject.
Book Synopsis The Origin of Turbulence in Near-Wall Flows by : A.V. Boiko
Download or read book The Origin of Turbulence in Near-Wall Flows written by A.V. Boiko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive survey of the origin of turbulence in near-wall shear layer flows. Instead of going too far into details modern approaches to the problem are discussed in a conceptual treatment. The transition from laminar to turbulent flows in shear layers is described including the generation of flow perturbations, their amplification and development, the breakdown of the initial laminar state, and transformation to a turbulent regime. This book also presents new approaches to boundary-layer transitions with strong external-flow perturbations and to the prediction and control of the presented near-wall transitions to turbulence. This book is addressed to researchers, lecturers and students in engineering, physics and mathematics.

Book excerpt: This volume contains 59 papers presented at the 13th Symposium of STAB (German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association). In this association, all those German scientists and engineers from universities, research establishments and industry are involved who are doing research and project work in numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, mainly for aerospace but also in other applications. Many of the contributions give results from federal and European-Union sponsored projects. The volume gives a broad overview of the ongoing work in this field in Germany. Covered are flow problems of high and low aspect-ratio wings and bluff bodies, laminar flow control and transition, hypersonic flows, transition and fluid mechanical modelling, LES and DNS, numerical simulation, aeroelasticity, measuring techniques and propulsion flows.

This book was released on 2006-01-18 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of transition from laminar to turbulent flow remains to this day a major challenge in theoretical and applied mechanics. A series of IUTAM symposia held over the last twenty five years at well-known Centres of research in the subject - Novosibirsk, Stuttgart, Toulouse, Sendai and Sedona (Arizona) - has proved to be a great catalyst which has given a boost to research and our understanding of the field. At this point of time, the field is changing significantly with several emerging directions. The sixth IUTAM meeting in the series, which was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India, focused on the progress after the fifth meeting held at Sedona in 1999. The s- posium, which adhered to the IUTAM format of a single session, included seven invited lectures, fifty oral presentations and eight posters. During the course of the symposium, the following became evident. The area of laminar-turbulent transition has progressed considerably since 1999. Better theoretical tools, for handling nonlinearities as well as transient behaviour are now available. This is accompanied by an en- mous increase in the level of sophistication of both experiments and direct numerical simulations. The result has been that our understanding of the early stages of the transition process is now on much firmer footing and we are now able to study many aspects of the later stages of the transition process.

Download or read book Instability and Transition written by M.Y. Hussaini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes contain the proceedings of the workshop on the Institute for Computer Instability and Transition, sponsored by Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the Langley Research Center (LaRC), during May 15 to June 9, 1989. The work shop coincided with the initiation of a new, focused research pro gram on instability and transition at LaRC. The objectives of the workshop were to (i) expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of instability and transition in shear flows over the entire speed range, (ii) acquaint the academic com munity with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these facilities, (iii) review current state-of-the-art and propose fu ture directions for instability and transition research, (iv) accelerate progress in elucidating basic understanding of transition phenomena and in transferring this knowledge into improved design methodolo gies through improved transition modeling, and (v) establish mech anisms for continued interaction. The objectives (i) to (iii) were of course immediately met. It is still premature to assess whether ob jectives (iv) and (v) are achieved. The workshop program consisted of tutorials, research presenta tions, panel discussions, experimental and computational demonstra tions, and collaborative projects.
