Book excerpt: This report documents the background and performance of the "Dade County Beach Nourishment Project", which was constructed over the period 1976 to 1983. This report presents data and analysis results based on beach profile monitoring, and the resulting shoreline changes and sand volume changes. The report draws upon monitoring data available for the period preceding and following the beach nourishment project for quantitative analysis of the beach fill performance and understanding ofcoastal processes in the study area, focusing particularly on areas within the project which, atypically, perform poorly compared to expectations or neighboring areas. These areas are called "Erosional Hot Spots" (EHS). Also presented are evaluations of the overall performance of the project. This report includes appendixes that provide access to much of the processed data for analysis by others, who may be interested in greater detail. Appendix A presents plots of the profile survey data listed by DEP Monument Number for visual inspection and Appendix B provides plots of shoreline and volume changes for different periods.

Book excerpt: This book is written for engineers, students of coastal processes and laypersons interested in beach nourishment, which consists of the placement of large quantities of good quality sediment on the beach to advance the shoreline seaward. The improvement of project performance through proper design and the predictability of performance are emphasized. The overall longevity of a project is addressed as are local erosional areas. The roles which wave height, project length and sediment quality play in project performance are addressed quantitatively. The results are illustrated through reference to a number of monitored nourishment projects. Biological and economic aspects of beach nourishment are addressed.

Book excerpt: Global warming, melting polar caps, rising sea levels and intensifying wave-current action, factors responsible for the alarming phenomena of coastal erosion on the one hand and adverse environmental impacts and the high cost of 'hard' protection schemes, on the other, have created interest in the detailed examination of the potential and range of applicability of the emerging and promising category of 'soft' shore protection methods. 'Soft' methods such as beach nourishment, submerged breakwaters, artificial reefs, gravity drain systems, floating breakwaters, plantations of hydrophylous shrubs or even dry branches, applied mostly during the past 20 years, are recognised as possessing technical, environmental and financial advantageous properties deserving more attention and further developmental experimentation than has occured hitherto. On the other hand, 'hard' shore protection methods such as seawalls, groins and detached breakwaters, artefacts borrowed from port design and construction technology, no matter how well designed and well implemented they may be, can hardly avoid intensification of the consequential erosive, often devastating, effects on the down-drift shores. Moreover, they often do not constitute environmentally and financially attractive solutions for long stretches of eroding shoreline. Engineers and scientists practising design and implementation of shore defence schemes have been aware for many years of the public demand for improved shore protection technologies. They are encouraging efforts that promise enrichment of those environmentally sound and financially attractive methods that can be safely applied.

The authors of this book are worldwide authorities in the field. Each chapter deals with an important topic in the field of coastal engineering. The topics are of recent deep concern all over the world motivated by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, 2005 Hurricane Katrina, 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami and other natural disasters. For proper coastal zone management, a broad range of knowledge is necessary. This book provides a basic understanding of the theories behind the diverse natural phenomena within the coastal areas, such as waves, tsunamis and sediment transport. The book also introduces various coastal conservation technologies such as coastal structures and beach nourishment. Finally, coastal zone management practices in the USA, Europe, and Japan are introduced. Each chapter is self-standing and readers can begin from any topic depending on their interest.

Book excerpt: On August 29, 2001, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District authorized Coastal Systems International (Coastal Systems) to perform Phase I investigations for the 227 Demonstration Project at the 63rd Street Erosional Hot Spot, City of Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County. The Phase I investigations consisted of an analysis of beach erosion and sand transport, both cross-shore and longshore, for most of Miami-Dade County and in the vicinity of the 63rd Street Hot Spot. Based on these investigations, basic design parameters for a demonstration project were determined. This work will also provide calibration data for Phase 11 sediment transport modeling, and the investigations will be the basis for detailed shore protection design parameters for the demonstration project. The 63rd Street erosional hot spot demonstration project site along the City of Miami Beach shoreline provides an excellent opportunity to address "erosional hot spot" issues which are being experienced in many Federal shore protection projects. Beach fill hot spots are problematic in that they may trigger early project renourishments thereby increasing project costs. To address these issues, Section 227 of the Water Resource and Development Act of 1996 (WRDA

Are such beach nourishment projects technically and economically sound? Or are they nothing more than building sand castles, as critics claim? Beach Nourishment and Protection provides a sound technical basis for decisionmaking, with recommendations regarding the utility of beach nourishment, the appropriate role of federal agencies, responsibility for cost, design methodology, and other issues. This volume Examines the economic and social role of beaches, the history of beach nourishment projects, and management strategies for shore protection. Discusses the role of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies, with a close-up look at the federal flood insurance program. Explores the state of the art in project design and prediction of outcomes, including the controversy over the use of traditional and nontraditional shore protection devices. Addresses what is known about the environmental impacts of beach nourishment. Identifies what outcomes should be targeted for continued monitoring by project officials. Beach Nourishment and Protection provides insight into the technical, economic, environmental, and policy implications of beach nourishment and protection, with examples and suggested research directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed monitoring of the performance of a two-phase beach nourishment project has provided valuable information on beach fill behavior and long-term response of a beach fill to prevailing coastal processes. The Atlantic Coast of Maryland (Ocean City) Shoreline Protection Project began with placement of a recreational beach by the State of Maryland during the summer of 1988. Within three months of placement, four storms impacted the area. Recovery was monitored for an additional two years. In the summers of 1990 and 1991, additional fill material including a storm protection dune was placed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a second phase for the purpose of storm protection. Within a year of the first placement, two large storms impacted the project. Initial recovery was also documented. Project monitoring included 12 profile survey lines, sediment collection, and placement of two dedicated wave gauges. The beach nourishment project performed well in protecting the beachfront infrastructure of Ocean City from storm damage. The fill material was eroded from the foreshore after the major storms of 1989 and 1991/92, but could be accounted for in the nearshore between the shoreline and closure. Representative profile survey locations show the differential behavior of the fill controlled by nearshore bathymetric variability along the project length. The 37th Street location represents the flatter, bar/trough type profile typical of the southern portion of the fill. Localized 'hot spots' of erosion occurred in areas where a shoal system attaches to the shoreface, as shown at 81st Street. The erosion pattern associated with these shoals was probably produced by wave convergence and divergence over these features.

Book excerpt: This report is a compendium of beach nourishment project characteristics for 20 typical U.S. shore segments for which the use of beach fill sediments from offshore borrow source areas has been suggested as a remedy for shore erosion. Data are provided to establish a basis for long-range planning of nourishment projects and systems. For each example project, the data provided consist of: history and description, location and bathymetry, fill and borrow site characteristics and specifications, design fill section, sediment grain size distributions, and fill calculations.
