Almost a century after Sigmund Freud dismissed most women's reports of incest victimization as wishful fantasy, the extent of the damage done by this form of abuse remains controversial in South Africa, with some researchers maintaining that incest victims often suffer no severe effects. This report presents the findings of a qualitative study designed to explore the short- and long-term effects of incestuous abuse experienced by 20 adult women incest survivors. Although all but one of the in-depth interviews were conducted with women who at the time were residing in Cape Town, the places in which the incestuous abuse had occurred are dispersed throughout South Africa. Book excerpt: The first major study to challenge the narrow definition of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by rereading six American literary texts, this book argues for the importance of literature in representing not just circumscribed, singular traumatic events, as Cathy Caruth argued in the late nineties, but for giving voice to chronic and cumulative, or complex, traumatic experiences. This interdisciplinary study traces the development of father–daughter incest narratives published in the last hundred years, from male-authored fiction to female-authored memoir, bringing new readings to Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night, Ellison’s Invisible Man, and the Dylan Farrow-Woody Allen case. This study builds on the work of those ushering in a second-wave of trauma theory, which has argued that the difficulty of speaking about a traumatic experience is not necessarily caused by neurobiological changes that prevent victims from recalling details. Rather, it’s from social and political repercussions. In other words, they argue that many who experience trauma aren’t unable to deliver accounts; they fear the results. There is a significant gender component to trauma, whose implications, along with those of race and class, have largely gone unexamined in the first-wave of trauma theory. Exploring two additional questions about articulating trauma, this book asks what happens when the voice of trauma is crying out from what Toni Morrison has called the “most delicate,” “most vulnerable” member of society: a female child; and, second, what happens when the trauma is not just a time-limit event but chronic and cumulative experiences. Some traumatic experiences, namely father–daughter incest, are culturally reduced to the untellable, and yet accounts of paternal incest are readily available in American literature. This book is written in part as a response to the psychological community which failed to include complex PTSD in the latest edition of the DSM (DSM-5), denying victims, many of whom are father–daughter incest survivors, the validation and recognition they deserve and leaving many misdiagnosed and thereby mistreated.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to test the theoretical hypothesis purported by writers in the area of incest that time-limited group therapy is an effective treatment to decrease symptoms seen in women incest victims. Increased interest in child sexual abuse has created a growing body of literature since the 1970's that focuses primarily on the prevalence and symptoms of incest. Treatment methods are the least researched, and, while prevalence and symptoms are documented empirically, only a handful of treatment paradigms are described well enough to replicate. Efficacy studies of treatment are virtually non-existent. This study attempted to document the efficacy of time-limited group therapy in six single-case studies. The hypotheses derived from the literature asserted that providing 12-week group therapy designed for this population would reduce symptoms related to depression and self-esteem. The null hypothesis was that no reduction of these symptoms would occur. Each case presented includes history, course of treatment, diagnosis, and formulation. After presenting results of the depression and self-esteem measurements, each case then focuses on the interpretation of the results. Qualitative data posited may contribute collateral evidence concerning the efficacy of the intervention. Summaries of the content and process of each group add to the understanding of incest and its treatment A critique of the design and measurement methods precedes a summary discussion including recommendations for replication of this research. This study found that time-limited group therapy was effective in reducing the target symptoms for some of the clients, but not others. It discusses why the group intervention appeared to be more effective in some cases than others.
