Book excerpt: This new book deals with the phenomenology of rocket exhaust plumes as the targets of space-based surveillance systems. Topics include the physical and chemical processes in rocket engines and their exhaust plumes, particularly in regard to flow properties, gas dynamics, and radiative mechanisms that are responsible for the generation of emission in rocket exhaust plumes at infrared and other wavelengths. System designers in a number of defense-related areas will be able to put the information in this book to immediate use.

Book excerpt: A safety analysis of aluminized solid rocket propellant burning at atmospheric pressure is desired. An attempt is made to simulate propellant levitating above a substrate due to the thrust generated by its plume using a motorized support apparatus. This study investigates the temperatures of the plume and burning aluminum droplets with varying substrates, propellant slug diameters, propellant formulations, and gap heights. Two spectrometers were used to collect broadband and narrowband spectral emissions from the plume underneath and immediately adjacent to the propellant-substrate gap. Spectral data were collected as the apparatus passed horizontally through the gap in order to characterize temperatures as a function of flame depth. The broadband spectra were fitted to a linearized Planck's function to estimate gas temperature for several values of emissivity, while the blue-green narrowband spectra were fitted to aluminum monoxide line strength files to calculate the temperature of the burning aluminum. Results indicate the aluminum monoxide flame temperature is generally hotter than the surrounding plume temperature. Calculated temperatures showed a generally flat trend as a function of depth from the center of the plume. Gas temperatures varied wildly and displayed no clear correlation with test variables. Post-test observations indicate that high-temperature chemical reactions within the substrate, phase changes, and the insulating effect of deposited alumina are likely causes for unpredictability.

Book excerpt: Three propellants with aluminum/silicon weight percentages of 18/0%, 13.5/4.5%, and 12/6% were fired in a subscale motor to determine if the plume infrared signature could be reduced without a significant loss in specific impulse. Spectral measurements from 2.5 to 5.5 micrometers and thermal measurements from 3.5 to 5.0 micrometers were made. Plume particle size measurements showed that only particles with small diameters (less than 1.93 micrometers) were present with any significant volume. Replacing a portion of the aluminum in a highly metallized solid propellant with silicon was found to eliminate the Al2O3 in favor of SiO2 and Al6SiOl3, without any change in particulate mass concentration or any large change in particle size distribution. These particulates were found to have significantly lower absorptivity than Al2O3. An additional investigation was conducted to determine the particle size distribution at the nozzle entrance. Malvern ensemble scattering, phase-Doppler single particle scattering and laser transmittance measurements made through windows in the combustion chamber at the nozzle entrance indicated that large particles were present (to 250 micrometers). However, most of the mass of the particles was contained in particles with diameters smaller than 5 micrometers. Approximate calculations made with the measured data showed that if 100 micrometers particles are present with the smoke (particles with diameters less than 2 micrometers) they could account for only approximately 10% of the article volume.

Book excerpt: Interest in accurate detection and targeting of aggressor missiles has received considerable interest with the national priority of developing a missile defense system. Understanding the thermal signatures of the exhaust plumes of such missiles is key to accomplishing that mission. Before signature models can be precisely developed for specific rockets, the radiation of the molecular or combustion species within those plumes must be accurately predicted. A combination translation/rotation scanning diagnostic technique has been developed to map the combustion species of a rocket plume and characterize its radiation properties. Using new infrared spectrometer and fiber optic cable technology to transmit the signal spectrum of interest, the custom designed mechanism can sweep through two dimensions of a steady-state rocket exhaust. A glow bar, or blackbody simulator, is shuttered on the opposite side of the plume, allowing the spectrometer to measure both the emission and absorption spectra. This thesis demonstrated the first time use of fiber optic cable to transmit infrared emission/absorption (E/A) spectra from a rocket plume to an infrared detector. This new fiber optic configuration allows for rapid translation and rotation around the rocket plume, establishing the capability for rapid spatial characterization of the combustion species present. Experimental results may then be compared to DoD rocket plume model predictions to highlight areas for improvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The periodic table of elements is among the most recognizable image in science. It lies at the core of chemistry and embodies the most fundamental principles of science. In this new edition, Eric Scerri offers readers a complete and updated history and philosophy of the periodic table. Written in a lively style to appeal to experts and interested lay-persons alike, The Periodic Table: Its Story and Its Significance begins with an overview of the importance of the periodic table and the manner in which the term "element" has been interpreted by chemists and philosophers across time. The book traces the evolution and development of the periodic table from its early beginnings with the work of the precursors like De Chancourtois, Newlands and Meyer to Mendeleev's 1869 first published table and beyond. Several chapters are devoted to developments in 20th century physics, especially quantum mechanics and and the extent to which they explain the periodic table in a more fundamental way. Other chapters examine the formation of the elements, nuclear structure, the discovery of the last seven infra-uranium elements, and the synthesis of trans-uranium elements. Finally, the book considers the many different ways of representing the periodic system and the quest for an optimal arrangement.

Only years after the war were the long-term effects of these gases realized. In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, these and other agents were used in localized wars. Chemical Warfare Agents: Tox

Book excerpt: The first edition of this book, Chemical Warfare Agents: Toxicity at Low Levels, was published just prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The second edition titled, Chemical Warfare Agents: Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutics, included new epidemiological and clinical studies of exposed or potentially exposed populations; new treatment concepts and products; improved organization of the national response apparatus addressing the potential for CWA terrorism; and improved diagnostic tests that enable rapid diagnosis and treatment. Since the second edition, the chemical warfare agent community has worked hard to advance research for protection and treatment and develop/improve response approaches for individuals and definitive care. Consequently, in addition to updating previous chapters, Chemical Warfare Agents: Biomedical and Psychological Effects, Medical Countermeasures, and Emergency Response, Third Edition features several new chapters that address the Syrian War, chemical destruction, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, biomarkers for chemical warfare agent exposure, field sensors, aircraft decontamination, lung/human on a chip, chemical warfare response decision making, and other research advancements. Features: Describes the newest medical interventions, and the latest technologies deployed in the field, as well as developments in the international response to CW usage highlighting recent events in the Middle East Discusses the latest in organizational/interagency partitioning in terms of responsibilities for emergency response, not just in the United States but at the international level—whether prevention, mitigation, medical care, reclamation, or medico-legal aspects of such response Contains the most current research from bench-level experts The third edition contains the most up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of the question of chemical warfare agent employment on the battlefield or in terrorism. Edited by workers that have been in the field for 35+ years, it remains faithful to the scientific "constants," while evaluating and crediting the advances by the industry that have made us safer.
