Book excerpt: The Canadian Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactor open fuel cycle consists of the following components: uranium mining and milling (Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan and Ontario), uranium refining, conversion and fuel fabrication (Ontario), nuclear power plant operations and temporary used fuel storage (Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick). In this research, an analysis was made of radionuclide (radioactive particle) releases between the start of operations and the present for each component of the CANDU fuel cycle. Sources of data analyzed included industry reports, conference proceedings, peer-reviewed technical journal articles, government publications and reference texts. Levels of radionuclides released and measured in the environment are identified, findings of health and environment studies of the releases are presented and analyzed and areas of future related research in the CANDU fuel cycle industries and health physics are recommended.

Book excerpt: Aecl has submitted an environmental impact statement (eis) to evaluate the concept of nuclear fuel disposal at depth in crystalline rock of the canadian shield. in this disposal concept used fuel would be emplaced in corrosion-resistant containers which would be surrounded by clay-based buffer and backfill materials. once groundwater is able to penetrate the buffer and corrosion-resistant container, radionuclides could be transported from the waste form to the surrounding geosphere, and eventually to the biosphere. the release of radionuclides from the waste form and their subsequent transport would be determined by the geochemistry of the disposal vault and surrounding geosphere. organic substances affect the geochemistry of radionuclides through complexation reactions that increase solubility and alter mobility, be affecting the redox of certain radionuclides and be providing food for microbes. the purpose of this study was to determine whether the buffer and backfill materials proposed for use in a disposal vault contain organics that could be leached by groundwarer in large enough quantities to complex with radionuclides and affect their mobility within the disposal vault and surrounding geosphere. buffer material, made from a mixture of 50 wt.% avonlea sodium bentonite and 50 wt.% silica sand, was extracted with deionized water to determine the release of dissolved organic carbon, humic acid and fulvic acid. the effect of radiation and heat from the used fuel was simulated by treating samples of buffer before leaching to various amounts of heat (60 degrees c and 90 degrees c) for periods of 2,4 and 6 weeks, and to ionizing radiation with doses of 25 kgy and 50 kgy. humic substances were isolated from the leachates to determine the concentrations of humic and fulvic acids and to determine their functional group content by acid-base titrations. the results showed that groundwater could leach significant amounts of organics that would complex with radionuclides such as the actinides, affecting their solubility and transport within the disposal vault and possible the surrounding geosphere. heating and radiation affect the amount and nature of leachable organics. however, one of the key parameters that needs to be addressed is the mobility of organic molecules through an intact buffer and backfill.

Book excerpt: The btf-105 experiment in the blowdown test facility is one of a series of experiments sponsored by the candu owners group (cog) to determine the release, transport and deposition of fission products from nuclear fuel under high-temperature transient conditions. the btf-105 experiment has been broken up into two tests: btf-105a and btf-105b. the btf-105a test is a precursor to the btf-105b test, which will generate fission product release data used to benchmark candu safety analysis codes. the btf-105a test will be used to assess instrumentation and procedures to be used during btf-105b, and to generate correlations between fuel sheath and fuel centreline temperatures. fission product release and transport data will also be obtained from low burnup fuel. the btf-105a test consists of a fuel stringer containing a single unirradiated instrumented zircaloy-clad uo2 fuel element. the assembly will be irradiated at a linear power of 50 kw/m for 10 days to establish an inventory of fission products in the fuel. following the soak irradiation, the stringer will be subjected to a coolant blowdown where the volume average temperature of the uo2 will rise to and be maintained at about 1600-1800 degrees c for about 10 minutes. the fuel element is predicted to fail during the ramp up to this temperature due to complete oxidation of the sheath. fission products released during the transient will be monitored by gamma spectrometers. following the test, the fuel stringer will be removed from the reactor and destructively examined in the crl hot cells. grab samples from inside the test section will also be removed and analyzed for fission products. this report presents an overall plan for the activities to be completed before, during and after the btf-105a blowdown test.

Book excerpt: A project is underway at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to assess the human health and environment effects associated with operation of Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor fuel cycle. In this first phase of the work, emphasis was focused on routine radionuclide releases from reactor and reprocessing facilities. For this study, sites for fifty 1-GW(e) capacity reactors and three reprocessing plants were selected to develop scenarios representative of US power requirements. For both the reactor and reprocessing facility siting schemes selected, relatively small impacts were calculated for locality-specific populations residing within 100 km. Also, the results of these analyses are being used in the identification of research priorities. 13 refs., 2 figs., 3 tabs.

Book excerpt: Understanding the behaviour of candu fuel under accident conditions is important for licensing current candu-phw reactors and for improving the safety performance of future candu designs. the btf in-reactor severe fuel damage experiments are being performed to increase our understanding of fuel thermo-mechanical behaviour, and fission-product release and transport under the degraded-cooling conditions typical of loss-of-coolant accident (loca) and loss-of-emergency-core-cooling (loecc) accident scenarios. data from the btf experiments will be used to benchmark candu safety analysis codes. this study of the fission-product retention characteristics of stainless steel and inconel surfaces was partially funded as an "in-kind" contribution to the phebus fp research program within the framework of the cog-phebus fp agreement. the primary objective of the btf-104 test was to determine the amount and timing of fission-product release from a candu fuel element under loca/loecc conditions resulting in a volume-average fuel temperature of 1550 degrees c. the value of this report is that it presents the results of a comparison of the fission-product retention characteristics of stainless steel and inconel at 500 to 700 degrees c in a steam-hydrogen atmosphere. the tellurium retention was similar on the two materials but the iodine and cesium were retained more effectively by the stainless steel. the implications of this work are that stainless steel piping surfaces are more effective than inconel surfaces in reducing the amount of iodine and cesium released to the containment under loca/loecc conditions.
