Book excerpt: In March 1994 the Fort Knox Staff Archeologist and Assistant Staff Archeologist conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of two proposed borrow areas to be used for berm repair on the Yano Range on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Bullitt County, Kentucky. Site 15Bu524 has Early Archaic, Late Archaic/Early Woodland, and Middle Woodland components. It is not eligible for the National Register and no additional archeological work is recommended for it. Site 15Bu525 is a lithic scatter of indeterminate prehistoric cultural affiliation. Site 15Bu526 has Early Archaic and Late Archaic coomponents. Site 15Bu527 has a Late Archaic/Early Woodland component. Portions of the sites have already been destroyed, but sizeable areas of 15Bu525-15Bu527 remain intact. 15Bu525-15Bu527 are considered potentially eligible for the National Register. If the installation proposes to expand the borrow pits into 15Bu525-15Bu527, these sites should be tested prior to earthmoving activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky's rich archaeological heritage spans thousands of years, and the Commonwealth remains fertile ground for study of the people who inhabited the midcontinent before, during, and after European settlement. This long-awaited volume brings together the most recent research on Kentucky's prehistory and early history, presenting both an accurate descriptive and an authoritative interpretation of Kentucky's past. The book is arranged chronologically -- from the Ice Age to modern times, when issues of preservation and conservation have overtaken questions of identification and classification. For each time slice of Kentucky's past, the contributors describe typical communities and settlement patterns, major changes from previous cultural periods, the nature of the economy and subsistence, artifacts, the general health and characteristics of the people, and regional cultural differences. Sites discussed include the Green River shell mounds, the Central Kentucky Adena mounds and enclosures, Eastern Kentucky rockshelters, the important Wickliffe site at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, Fort Ancient culture villages, and the fortified towns of the Mississippian period in Western Kentucky. The authors draw from a wealth of unpublished material and offer the detailed insights and perspectives of specialists who have focused much of their professional careers on the scientific investigation of Kentucky's prehistory. The book's many graphic elements -- maps, artifact drawings, photographs, and village plans -- combined with a straightforward and readable text, provide a format that will appeal to the general reader as well as to students and specialists in other fields who wish to learn more about Kentucky's archaeology.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Phase I archaeological study was conducted of two areas, totalling 121 ha (299 acres), scheduled for rehabilitation on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Meade county, Kentucky. The survey, conducted from April-August 1994, recorded 30 sites (15Md347-15Md376), and 10 prehistoric isolated finds. The sites include Early Archaic through Middle Woodland components, plus prehistoric sites of indeterminate affiliation, and mid nineteenth to mid twentieth century historic sites. Sites 15Md347, 15Md348, 15Md350, 15Md352-15Md374, 15Md376, and the isolated finds are not eligible for the National Register. No additional archaeological investigations are recommended for these sites and isolated finds. Sites 15Md349 (Late Archaic), 15Md351 (Late Archaic), and 15Md375 (Early Archaic and Middle Woodland) are open habitation sites. They are considered potentially eligible for the National Register, because of the possibility of intact cultural deposits and/or the possibility of identifiable activity areas on the site surface. Additional archaeological investigations are recommended for 15Md349, 15Md351, and 15Md375. These investigations should be integrated into and coordinated with the rehab activities.

Book excerpt: The Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park covers over 800 acres within Manchester, Tennessee, and is owned and managed by the Tennessee Division of State Parks. The central archaeological site within the park boundary is The Old Stone Fort mounds that enclose about 50 acres on a plateau above the convergence of the Big Duck and the Little Duck Rivers. The hilltop enclosure dates to the Middle Woodland Period, and radiocarbon dates obtained at the site range from the first to the fifth century A.D. Because of its size and apparent complexity, previous investigations of the site have been quite limited in areal exposure. Many questions remain as to the overall structure of the site, including the relationship of built and natural features, the presence of any structures or other anthropogenic features, and the occurrence of presence of any domestic remains. This research project utilizes detailed digital topographic survey, geographical information system (GIS) analysis, geophysical survey, limited re-excavation of previously investigated portions of the site, and manual coring to locate and characterize archaeological deposits within the enclosure and mounds. Magnetometer, resistance, electromagnetic susceptibility, conductivity, and ground penetrating radar techniques were used during the investigations. Geophysical data, using these instruments, were collected over the same area in many cases. All together 20,000 m2 were examined during the project. Results indicate potential archaeological features and deposits within the plateau interior. Analysis suggests the presence of several geophysical anomalies potentially associated with prehistoric use of the site, especially within the Eastern Gateway complex. One such anomaly, or complex of anomalies, represents a possible structure. Historic archaeological deposits are also indicated by the geophysical data. Excavations at the site were limited to minimize impact. In a re-excavated trench, a lens of black shale within the stone mound construction may indicate a building stage not previously observed at Old Stone Fort. A second excavation confirmed a ditch feature detected in the geophysical survey. Archaeological deposits located during the survey are interpreted as evidence of sustained use of the ceremonial site during the Middle Woodland Period by local corporate groups to maintain and intensify membership for individuals who were settled in nucleated villages throughout most of the year.

Book excerpt: In April 1996, the Fort Knox contract archaeology staff conducted a phase I survey of three proposed borrow areas on Cedar Creek Range, Hardin County, Kentucky. The borrow areas encompass 4.0 ha (10 acres). Four sites were recorded in the survey. Site 15Hd523, in Borrow Area 1, and 15Hd526, in Borrow Area 3, are lithic scatters of indeterminate prehistoric affiliation. Site 15Hd524 in Borrow Area 1 and 15Hd525 near Borrow Area 1 are nineteenth or twentieth century historic sites. Due to previous disturbance, 15HdS23, 15Hd52S, and 15Hd526 are not eligible for the National Register, and no further archaeological investigation is recommended for them. Site 15Hd524 is potentially eligible for the National Register. it should be avoided, because of its archaeological potential and proximity to a creek. If 15Hd524 cannot be avoided, additional archaeological research must be conducted prior to borrowing activities to assess more fully its National Register status. If 15Hd524 is avoided or impacts mitigated through additional archaeological research, then it is recommended that the borrowing be conducted as proposed. Cedar Creek Cemetery is near Borrow Area 3. The cemetery is bermed and fenced. No impact to the cemetery is expected due to the proposed borrowing activities.
