Book Synopsis Contemporary Lithic Analysis in the Southeast by : Philip J. Carr
Download or read book Contemporary Lithic Analysis in the Southeast written by Philip J. Carr and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing work by a mixture of veterans and a new generation of lithic analysts, Contemporary Lithic Analysis in the Southeast explores fresh ideas while reworking and pushing the limits of traditional methods and hypotheses. The variability in the southeastern lithic landscape over space and through time makes it a dynamic and challenging region for archaeologists. Demonstrating a holistic approach and using a variety of methods, this volume aims to derive information regarding prehistoric lifeways from lithic assemblages. The contributors use data from a wide temporal span and a variety of sites across the Southeast, ranging from Texas to South Carolina and from Florida to Kentucky. Not merely cautionary tales, these case studies demonstrate the necessity of looking beyond the bag of lithic material sitting in the laboratory to address the key questions in the organization of prehistoric lithic technologies. How do field-collection strategies bias our interpretations? What is therelationship between technological strategies and tool design? How can inferences regarding social and economic strategies be made from lithic assemblages? Contributors William Andrefsky Jr. / Andrew P. Bradbury / Philip J. Carr / CarolynConklin / D. Book Synopsis Lithic Debitage by : William Andrefsky (Jr.)
Download or read book Lithic Debitage written by William Andrefsky (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debitage, the by-product flakes and chips from stone tool production, is the most abundant artifact type found on prehistoric sites. Archaeologists now recognise its potential in providing information about the kinds of tools produced, the characteristics of the technology that produced them, human mobility patterns and even site function, applying scientific analyses to its study. This volume brings together some of the most recent research on debitage analysis and intepretation, including replication experiments, and offers methodologies for interpreting variability in assemblages at the micro and macro level.

Book Synopsis Written in Stone by : P. Nick Kardulias
Download or read book Written in Stone written by P. Nick Kardulias and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in Stone: The Multiple Dimensions of Lithic Analysis demonstrates the vitality of contemporary lithics analysis by examining material from a variety of geographical locations. This edited collection is primarily concerned with the link between craft production and social complexity, the nature of trade, and the delineation of settlement patterns and manipulation of landscape. While deconstructing the present to reconstruct the past, each chapter incorporates a technological dimension shaped by the type of analysis utilized. Methods include microwear analysis, which adds significant understanding of stone tool function, to the identification of obsidian sources, which illustrates the potential of lithic provenance studies for reconstructing trade. This book verifies and expands on the notion that lithics play an integral role in our understanding of past societies at all levels of complexity, from Paleolithic hunter-gatherers to archaic states.
Book Synopsis Handbook for the Analysis of Micro-Particles in Archaeological Samples by : Amanda G. Henry
Download or read book Handbook for the Analysis of Micro-Particles in Archaeological Samples written by Amanda G. Henry and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a resource for those already familiar with some kinds of micro-particles who wish to learn more about others, or for those just starting out in the study of microremains who wish to have a broad understanding about microscopic archaeology. Topics covered in this handbook include diatom microfossils, starch granules, pollen grains, phytoliths, natural fibers, volcanic glass, minerals, insect remains, and feathers. Archaeological investigations increasingly rely on specialist identification of microscopic remnants found in sites. These micro-particles can provide information about the site environment and human activities that may not be apparent from artifacts and materials preserved on the macro-scale, and have given us new, and often high-profile, information about our past. The investigation of this "invisible archaeology" - that is, invisible to the naked eye - is still somewhat new, and generally each kind of micro-particle is studied individually. Researchers become experts in a narrow range of micro-particle types, but may be less familiar with, or even completely unaware of, the multitude of other forms that are frequently encountered in archaeological samples. This handbook’s accessible approach is suitable for those at the beginner level.
Book Synopsis Current Approaches to the Analysis and Interpretation of Small Lithic Sites in the Northeast by : Christina B. Rieth
Download or read book Current Approaches to the Analysis and Interpretation of Small Lithic Sites in the Northeast written by Christina B. Rieth and published by NYS State Museum. This book was released on 2008 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume reflects the continuing interest and important contributions being made by archaeologists to the study of small lithic sites in the Northeast. The articles in this volume challenge existing notions that these small sites do not produce meaningful data about the past by highlighting the ways in which prehistoric populations exploited the local landscape for settlement purposes. This work has been enhanced by the use of modern analytical, recovery, and archaeometric techniques, which not only have allowed for the reanalysis of older data sets but also have added new information to an already large regional data set. The articles in this volume are grouped around three general themes: Defining and Assessing the Research Potential of Small Lithic Sites, Small Lithic Sites and their Contributions to Local and Regional Settlement Systems, and Managing and Evaluating the National Register Significance of Small Lithic Sites. Small lithic sites dating from the Archaic Period (c. 10,000 B.P.) to European Contact (c. 500 B.P.) are discussed within the volume's chapters."--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis All the Small Things by : Paris Morwood Franklin
Download or read book All the Small Things written by Paris Morwood Franklin and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis uses the microdebitage recovered from the La Prele Mammoth Site in Converse County, Wyoming to investigate the dominant chipped stone working behavior that took place there. The project begins with an analysis of modern experimental microdebitage made from the same toolstone materials found at La Prele. These experimental data show that analysts may be able to tell the difference between early-stage and late-stage lithic reduction via the proportion of complete flakes in each collection unit of an archaeological site. Lithic analysis of microdebitage from Block B of La Prele shows that the people who occupied this area of the site likely arrived with complete or nearly complete tools that they finished and/or resharpened while living there. Lastly, the spatial distribution of microdebitage recovered from Block B may serve as an additional line of evidence that there is a house structure present at La Prele. Informed by an experimental component, this analysis of the chipped stone assemblage from Block B of La Prele provides support for the idea that highly mobile PaleoIndigenous peoples likely built physical structures as they moved around.
