Book excerpt: When employing GPS data acquisition systems to capture vehicle drive-cycle information, a number of errors often appear in the raw data samples, such as sudden signal loss, extraneous or outlying data points, speed drifting, and signal white noise, all of which limit the quality of field data for use in downstream applications. Unaddressed, these errors significantly impact the reliability of source data and limit the effectiveness of traditional drive-cycle analysis approaches and vehicle simulation software. Without reliable speed and time information, the validity of derived metrics for drive cycles, such as acceleration, power, and distance, become questionable. This study explores some of the common sources of error present in raw onboard GPS data and presents a detailed filtering process designed to correct for these issues. Test data from both light and medium/heavy duty applications are examined to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed filtration process across the range of vehicle vocations. Graphical comparisons of raw and filtered cycles are presented, and statistical analyses are performed to determine the effects of the proposed filtration process on raw data. Finally, an evaluation of the overall benefits of data filtration on raw GPS data and present potential areas for continued research is presented.

Book excerpt: Building on our previous efforts to study freight mobility and reliability, a GPS-based data analysis methodology was developed to study the freight performance of heavy commercial trucks along 38 key freight corridors in the Twin Cities metropolitan area (TCMA). One year of truck GPS data collected in 2012 was obtained from American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) to study freight mobility and reliability. Several performance measures, such as truck mobility, delay, and reliability index, were computed and analyzed by route, roadway segment, and time of day. For data quality and reliability verification, average truck speed and hourly volume percentage computed from the truck GPS data were validated with weigh-in-motion (WIM) and automatic traffic recorders (ATR) data at selected locations. The GPS based freight analysis methodology offers potential opportunities for freight planners and managers to generate reliable measures in a timely manner. The resulting performance measures indicate that these measures derived from truck GPS data can be used to support the USDOT performance measure initiative and support regional surface freight planner in identifying freight bottlenecks, infrastructure improvement needs, and operational strategies to promote efficient freight movement. FHWA recently announced the National Performance Measurement Research Data Set (NPMRDS) to support its Freight Performance Measurement (FPM). The NPMRDS includes probe vehicle based travel time data in every 5-minute interval. This report also explored the feasibility of using one month of NPMRDS data in Minnesota to compute freight mobility and speed variations along the National Highway System (NHS) during AM and PM peak periods.According to statistics from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), each year approximately 17% of all work zone fatalities are pedestrians. People who are visually impaired often encounter physical and information barriers that limit their accessibility and mobility. A survey was conducted among 10 visually impaired participants as a starting point to understand their challenges and what types of information are helpful in providing bypass or routing instructions to them around work zones. The survey results were incorporated into development of guiding documents in determining information elements that are essential and useful for providing routing instructions to the visually impaired around work zones. Building on our previous efforts to provide geometry and signal timing to the visually impaired at signalized intersections, a smartphone-based navigation system was developed and integrated with navigational audible information to alert pedestrians at decision points prior to their arrival at a work zone. The recommended message elements from survey results were implemented in a smartphone app that uses GPS and Bluetooth technologies to determine a user's location. When a work zone is detected, the smartphone will vibrate to alert users and the app will then announce a corresponding audible message to users. The visually impaired users can perform a single tap on the smartphone to repeat the messages, if needed. Functionality testing and system validation of the smartphone app were performed by attaching four Bluetooth beacons to light posts near a construction site in St. Paul, MN. Additional research is needed to conduct experiments with visually impaired users and evaluate system reliability and usefulness.

Book excerpt: Countermeasures for motor vehicle crashes are often determined after extensive data analysis of the crash history of a roadway segment. An important factor that drives the value of this analysis is the accuracy, or precision, with which the crash is located. Yet this location is only as accurate as the estimate of the police officer. In light of this, many have suggested that global positioning system (GPS) technology has the potential to increase data accuracy and decrease the time spent recording crash location data. Over 10 months, the locations of 34 crashes were determined using both the conventional method and a hand-held GPS receiver. The two methods were compared in terms of timeliness and precision. The benefits of any improved precision using the GPS were assessed through querying crash data analysts at the local level as to how the improved precision affected their consideration of potential crash countermeasures for five crashes selected from the sample. At the scene of the crash, the use of GPS receivers added up to an average of 10 extra minutes per crash, depending on how crash location was defined. There was an average disparity of 130 ft (39 m) between the location as determined with the GPS and conventional methods, presuming the GPS precision given in the literature is within 7 ft (2 m). However, although both the literature and survey responses revealed that greater precision will affect evaluation of crash countermeasures in some instances, many of the errors cited in conventional crash location methods arise from human error rather than precision. The authors provide recommendations for defining crash location uniformly, limitations of the methodology employed in this effort, and the types of countermeasures that may or may not benefit from improved precision.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accurate measurement of vehicle classification is a highly valued factor in traffic operation and management, validations of travel demand models, freight studies, and even emission impact analysis of traffic operation. Inductive loops are increasingly used specifically for traffic monitoring at highway traffic data collection sites. Many studies have proven that the vehicle speed can be estimated accurately by using dual-loop data under free traffic condition, and then vehicle lengths can be estimated accurately. The capability of measuring vehicle lengths makes dual-loop detectors a potential real-time data source for vehicle classification. However, the existing dual-loop length-based vehicle classification model was developed with an assumption that the difference of a vehicle's speed on the first and the second single loop is not significant. Under congested traffic flows, vehicles' speeds change frequently and even fiercely, and the assumption cannot be met any more. The outputs of the existing models have a high error rate under non-free traffic conditions (such as synchronized and stop-and-go congestion states). The errors may be contributed by the complex characteristics of traffic flows under congestion; but quantification of such contributing factors remains unclear. In this study, the dual-loop data and vehicle classification models were evaluated with concurred video ground-truth data. The mechanism of the length-based vehicle classification and relevant traffic flow characteristics were tried to be revealed. In order to obtain the ground-truth vehicle event data, the software VEVID (Vehicle Video-Capture Data Collector) was used to extract high-resolution vehicle trajectory data from the videotapes. This vehicle trajectory data was used to identify the errors and reasons of the vehicle classifications resulted from the existing dual-loop model. Meanwhile, a probe vehicle equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) data logger was used to set up reference points for VEVID and to collect traffic profile data under varied traffic flow states for developing the new model under stop-and-go traffic flow. The research has proven inability of the existing vehicle classification model in producing satisfactory estimates of vehicle lengths under congestion, i.e., synchronized or stop-and-go traffic states. The Vehicle Classification under Synchronized Traffic Model (VC-Sync model) was developed to estimate vehicle lengths against the synchronized traffic flow and the Vehicle Classification under Stop-and-Go Model (VC-Stog model) was developed to estimate vehicle lengths against the stop-and-go traffic flow. Compare to the existing models, under the congested traffic flows, the newly developed models have improved the accuracy of vehicle length estimation significantly. The contribution of this research is reflected in the following aspects: 1) An innovative VEVID-based approach is developed for evaluating the concurred dual-loop data and resulted vehicle classification and relevant traffic flow characteristics against video-based ground-truth vehicle event trajectory data, which is difficult to conduct with traditional approaches; 2) Innovative vehicle classification models for both synchronized traffic and stop-and-go traffic states are developed through such an evaluation process; 3) The algorithms for processing the dual-loop vehicle event raw data have been improved by considering the influence of traffic flow characteristics;. 4) A GPS-based approach is developed for setting up the reference points in field in conjunction with application of VEVID, which is proven a safety and efficient approach compared to traditional manual approaches. And the GPS-based travel profile data is greatly helpful in developing the new models.
