Results were obtained for a torisphere under internal pressure and also for centrally loaded spheres. A study was made of the effect of elastic-plastic behavior on the buckling of spheres with axisymmetric imperfections subjected to external pressure. It was found that plastic yielding played a significant role in reducing the buckling pressure of these shells. The influence of plastic yielding increased with increase of the thickness to radius ratio. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report involves the development of a curved finite element for the analysis of symmetrically loaded shells of revolution with transverse shear effects. The shell displacements are written in local rectilinear coordinates. They are represented by four-degrees of freedom at a node, two translations and two rotations. The geometric approximation of the curved shell element is similar to that given by Khojasteh-Bakht in 'Analysis of Elastic-Plastic Shells of Revolution Under Axisymmetric Loading by the Finite Element Method.' The equilibrium equations governing the shell behavior were derived by the principle of minimum total potential energy. Several selected numerical examples were solved and the solutions are in excellent agreement with known results. (Author).

Book excerpt: A method of analyzing nonlinear static and dynamic responses of deformable solids has been developed based on an incremental variational formulation using the Lagrangian mode of description. The material nonlinearity due to plasticity or viscoplasticity as well as the geometric nonlinearity due to large displacements are considered. The equations of motion are obtained in a linearized incremental form using the principle of virtual work and solved using step-by-step numerical integration procedures. Equilibrium check is made at the end of each step and the residual forces are added to the next increment for improved accuracy over the pure incremental method. For elastic-plastic solutions the flow theory of plasticity is used along with the von Mises yield condition for isotropically hardening materials. The viscoplastic constitutive theory is also in the form of an associated flow law and capable of considering strain rate sensitive behavior. The viscoplastic strains are taken into account using an initial strain formulation. The discretization of the structure is achieved by the use of degenerate isoparametric finite elements and the computer codes that have been developed are capable of analyzing large axisymmetric deformations of shells of revolution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A refined axisymmetric curved finite element for the analysis of thin elastic plastic shells of revolution is described in the report. The improved element is obtained by employing cubic polynomials for the assumed in-plane and out-of-plane displacements in terms of local Cartesian coordinates. This introduces into the solution two internal degrees of freedom in the cord direction of each element. These internal degrees of freedom are removed by static condensation before assembling the individual element stiffness matrices, and are subsequently recovered after the nodal displacements are obtained. On comparison with the previous formulation, this procedure greatly improves the accuracy of the solution especially with regards to inplane stress-resultants at discontinuities in the meridional curvature and interelement equilibrium of forces. The latter fact makes it possible to analyze shells with discontinuous meridional slope. In using this element, improvement in the convergence of the elastic-plastic solutions has been also observed. Complete listing of the modified program written in FORTRAN IV language is given. (Author).

Book excerpt: Two numerical methods have been developed, using the assumed-stress hybrid finite-element model as a basis, for the elastic-plastic, small deflection analysis of structures under static loading. The two approaches chosen: the initial-strain approach and the initial stress-approach, result in a set of linear incremental simultaneous algebraic equations to be solved for each increment in applied external loading, with the global stiffness matrix remaining unchanged throughout the loading process and the effects of plasticity included as equivalent loading.

Analysis and design of these structures is of continuing interest to the scienti c and engineering communities. Accurate and conservative assessments of the maximum load carried by a structure, as well as the equilibrium path in both the elastic and inelastic range, are of paramount importance to the engineer. The elastic behavior of shells has been closely investigated, mostly by means of the nite element method. Inelastic analysis however, especially accounting for damage effects, has received much less attention from researchers. In this book, we present a computational model for nite element, elasto-plastic, and damage analysis of thin and thick shells. Formulation of the model proceeds in several stages. First, we develop a theory for thick spherical shells, providing a set of shell constitutive equations. These equations incorporate the effects of transverse shear deformation, initial curvature, and radial stresses. The proposed shell equations are conveniently used in nite element analysis. 0 AsimpleC quadrilateral, doubly curved shell element is developed. By means of a quasi-conforming technique, shear and membrane locking are prevented. The element stiffness matrix is given explicitly, making the formulation computationally ef cient. We represent the elasto-plastic behavior of thick shells and plates by means of the non-layered model, using an Updated Lagrangian method to describe a small-strain geometric non-linearity. For the treatment of material non-linearities, we adopt an Iliushin’s yield function expressed in terms of stress resultants, with isotropic and kinematic hardening rules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a computer program for the elastic-plastic dynamic analysis of shells of revolution. General isoparametric elements with curved sides are used in the finite element discretization. These are capable of representing solids of revolution in the form of a layered system. Structures with complex geometries and sharp discontinuities may be studied. Solutions can be obtained for both thin and thick shells because the customary Kirchhoff-Love hypothesis is not invoked. Dynamic analysis is carried out by means of step-by-step integration, the program allowing for the use of any of the schemes belonging to the Newmark family of methods (with free parameters gamma and beta) and the Wilson and Farhoomand theta method. Flow theory of plasticity is used in the inelastic range, and either isotropic hardening or kinematic linear hardening may be adopted. The program can analyze axisymmetric structures subjected to axially symmetric loading as well as plane stress problems. Numerical examples presented include the static analysis of a fixed end beam and the dynamic analyses of a cantilever, a simply supported beam, and two spherical caps. (Author).

Book excerpt: BIM for Structural Engineering and Architecture Building Information Modeling: Framework for Structural Design outlines one of the most promising new developments in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Building information modeling (BIM) is an information management and analysis technology that is changing the role of computation in the architectural and engineering industries. The innovative process constructs a database assembling all of the objects needed to build a specific structure. Instead of using a computer to produce a series of drawings that together describe the building, BIM creates a single illustration representing the building as a whole. This book highlights the BIM technology and explains how it is redefining the structural analysis and design of building structures. BIM as a Framework Enabler This book introduces a new framework—the structure and architecture synergy framework (SAS framework)—that helps develop and enhance the understanding of the fundamental principles of architectural analysis using BIM tools. Based upon three main components: the structural melody, structural poetry, and structural analysis, along with the BIM tools as the frame enabler, this new framework allows users to explore structural design as an art while also factoring in the principles of engineering. The framework stresses the influence structure can play in form generation and in defining spatial order and composition. By highlighting the interplay between architecture and structure, the book emphasizes the conceptual behaviors of structural systems and their aesthetic implications and enables readers to thoroughly understand the art and science of whole structural system concepts. Presents the use of BIM technology as part of a design process or framework that can lead to a more comprehensive, intelligent, and integrated building design Places special emphasis on the application of BIM technology for exploring the intimate relationship between structural engineering and architectural design Includes a discussion of current and emerging trends in structural engineering practice and the role of the structural engineer in building design using new BIM technologies Building Information Modeling: Framework for Structural Design provides a thorough understanding of architectural structures and introduces a new framework that revolutionizes the way building structures are designed and constructed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of a book first published in 1972 has kept the general features of the first edition but as could be expected after two decades there are also substantial differences. For instance optimal design has been completely deleted as the developments in this field have been so great that it warrants a book in itself. The fundamental concepts based on Drucker's postulate rather than those of Prager's assumptions function have been introduced. Problems of cyclic loading have been given some more extensive treatment, both in the general theory and in applications. General indications and references have been added for reinforced concrete plates and shells. A general presentation of the yield condition for both plates and shells has been included and the section on the influence of axial force in plates has been almost re-written. Finally, a chapter has been added exclusively devoted to the numerical approach to limit load and shake-down load evaluation. Like the previous edition the book is directed towards engineering applications. The theory is rigorously developed and is therefore of great use to engineering students in plastic limit analysis. Furthermore, applications to metal and reinforced concrete plates and shells and to metal disks are treated by both analytical and numerical approaches.
