Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distribution theory, a relatively recent mathematical approach to classical Fourier analysis, not only opened up new areas of research but also helped promote the development of such mathematical disciplines as ordinary and partial differential equations, operational calculus, transformation theory, and functional analysis. This text was one of the first to give a clear explanation of distribution theory; it combines the theory effectively with extensive practical applications to science and engineering problems. Based on a graduate course given at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, this book has two objectives: to provide a comparatively elementary introduction to distribution theory and to describe the generalized Fourier and Laplace transformations and their applications to integrodifferential equations, difference equations, and passive systems. After an introductory chapter defining distributions and the operations that apply to them, Chapter 2 considers the calculus of distributions, especially limits, differentiation, integrations, and the interchange of limiting processes. Some deeper properties of distributions, such as their local character as derivatives of continuous functions, are given in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 introduces the distributions of slow growth, which arise naturally in the generalization of the Fourier transformation. Chapters 5 and 6 cover the convolution process and its use in representing differential and difference equations. The distributional Fourier and Laplace transformations are developed in Chapters 7 and 8, and the latter transformation is applied in Chapter 9 to obtain an operational calculus for the solution of differential and difference equations of the initial-condition type. Some of the previous theory is applied in Chapter 10 to a discussion of the fundamental properties of certain physical systems, while Chapter 11 ends the book with a consideration of periodic distributions. Suitable for a graduate course for engineering and science students or for a senior-level undergraduate course for mathematics majors, this book presumes a knowledge of advanced calculus and the standard theorems on the interchange of limit processes. A broad spectrum of problems has been included to satisfy the diverse needs of various types of students.

Book excerpt: The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 30 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2-volume book is an updated, reorganized and considerably enlarged version of the previous edition of the Research Problem Book in Analysis (LNM 1043), a collection familiar to many analysts, that has sparked off much research. This new edition, created in a joint effort by a large team of analysts, is, like its predecessor, a collection of unsolved problems of modern analysis designed as informally written mini-articles, each containing not only a statement of a problem but also historical and methodological comments, motivation, conjectures and discussion of possible connections, of plausible approaches as well as a list of references. There are now 342 of these mini- articles, almost twice as many as in the previous edition, despite the fact that a good deal of them have been solved!

Book excerpt: This unique text is an introduction to harmonic analysis on the simplest symmetric spaces, namely Euclidean space, the sphere, and the Poincaré upper half plane. This book is intended for beginning graduate students in mathematics or researchers in physics or engineering. Written with an informal style, the book places an emphasis on motivation, concrete examples, history, and, above all, applications in mathematics, statistics, physics, and engineering. Many corrections and updates have been incorporated in this new edition. Updates include discussions of P. Sarnak and others' work on quantum chaos, the work of T. Sunada, Marie-France Vignéras, Carolyn Gordon, and others on Mark Kac's question "Can you hear the shape of a drum?", A. Lubotzky, R. Phillips and P. Sarnak's examples of Ramanujan graphs, and, finally, the author's comparisons of continuous theory with the finite analogues. Topics featured throughout the text include inversion formulas for Fourier transforms, central limit theorems, Poisson's summation formula and applications in crystallography and number theory, applications of spherical harmonic analysis to the hydrogen atom, the Radon transform, non-Euclidean geometry on the Poincaré upper half plane H or unit disc and applications to microwave engineering, fundamental domains in H for discrete groups Γ, tessellations of H from such discrete group actions, automorphic forms, and the Selberg trace formula and its applications in spectral theory as well as number theory.

Book excerpt: Since its beginnings with Fourier (and as far back as the Babylonian astron omers), harmonic analysis has been developed with the goal of unraveling the mysteries of the physical world of quasars, brain tumors, and so forth, as well as the mysteries of the nonphysical, but no less concrete, world of prime numbers, diophantine equations, and zeta functions. Quoting Courant and Hilbert, in the preface to the first German edition of Methods of Mathematical Physics: "Recent trends and fashions have, however, weakened the connection between mathematics and physics. " Such trends are still in evidence, harmful though they may be. My main motivation in writing these notes has been a desire to counteract this tendency towards specialization and describe appli cations of harmonic analysis in such diverse areas as number theory (which happens to be my specialty), statistics, medicine, geophysics, and quantum physics. I remember being quite surprised to learn that the subject is useful. My graduate eduation was that of the 1960s. The standard mathematics graduate course proceeded from Definition 1. 1. 1 to Corollary 14. 5. 59, with no room in between for applications, motivation, history, or references to related work. My aim has been to write a set of notes for a very different sort of course.

Book excerpt: Written as a textbook, A First Course in Functional Analysis is an introduction to basic functional analysis and operator theory, with an emphasis on Hilbert space methods. The aim of this book is to introduce the basic notions of functional analysis and operator theory without requiring the student to have taken a course in measure theory as a prerequisite. It is written and structured the way a course would be designed, with an emphasis on clarity and logical development alongside real applications in analysis. The background required for a student taking this course is minimal; basic linear algebra, calculus up to Riemann integration, and some acquaintance with topological and metric spaces.

Book excerpt: This work discusses methods for efficient audio processing with finite impulse response (FIR) filters. Such filters are widely used for high-quality acoustic signal processing, e.g. for headphone or loudspeaker equalization, in binaural synthesis, in spatial sound reproduction techniques and for the auralization of reverberant environments. This work focuses on real-time applications, where the audio processing is subject to minimal delays (latencies). Different fast convolution concepts (transform-based, interpolation-based and number-theoretic), which are used to implement FIR filters efficiently, are examined regarding their applicability in real-time. These fast, elementary techniques can be further improved by the concept of partitioned convolution. This work introduces a classification and a general framework for partitioned convolution algorithms and analyzes the algorithmic classes which are relevant for real-time filtering: Elementary concepts which do not partition the filter impulse response (e.g. regular Overlap-Add and Overlap-Save convolution) and advanced techniques, which partition filters uniformly and non-uniformly. The algorithms are thereby regarded in their analytic complexity, their performance on target hardware, the optimal choice of parameters, assemblies of multiple filters, multi-channel processing and the exchange of filter impulse responses without audible artifacts. Suitable convolution techniques are identified for different types of audio applications, ranging from resource-aware auralizations on mobile devices to extensive room acoustics audio rendering using dedicated multi-processor systems.

Book excerpt: The interplay between functional and stochastic analysis has wide implications for problems in partial differential equations, noncommutative or "free" probability, and Riemannian geometry. Written by active researchers, each of the six independent chapters in this volume is devoted to a particular application of functional analytic methods in stochastic analysis, ranging from work in hypoelliptic operators to quantum field theory. Every chapter contains substantial new results as well as a clear, unified account of the existing theory; relevant references and numerous open problems are also included.Key topics:* Stochastic differential equations (SDEs), hypoelliptic operators, and SDEs based on Lévy processes* Stochastic calculus on Riemannian manifolds and curved Wiener spaces* Noncommutative and quantum probability* The Feynman integral, evolution processes, the Feynman-Kac formula, and applications to quantum field theory* Convolution operators and the amenability of the underlying locally compact groups, with connections among classical random walks, spectral theory, and Beurling and Segal subalgebrasSelf-contained, well-motivated, and replete with suggestions for further investigation, this book will be especially valuable as a seminar text for dissertation-level graduate students. Research mathematicians and physicists will also find it a useful and stimulating reference.Contributors: D.R. Bell; B.K. Driver; S. Gudder; B. Jefferies; H. Kunita; and M.M. Rao.

Book excerpt: Fourier analysis aims to decompose functions into a superposition of simple trigonometric functions, whose special features can be exploited to isolate specific components into manageable clusters before reassembling the pieces. This two-volume text presents a largely self-contained treatment, comprising not just the major theoretical aspects (Part I) but also exploring links to other areas of mathematics and applications to science and technology (Part II). Following the historical and conceptual genesis, this book (Part I) provides overviews of basic measure theory and functional analysis, with added insight into complex analysis and the theory of distributions. The material is intended for both beginning and advanced graduate students with a thorough knowledge of advanced calculus and linear algebra. Historical notes are provided and topics are illustrated at every stage by examples and exercises, with separate hints and solutions, thus making the exposition useful both as a course textbook and for individual study.

Book excerpt: This textbook is a completely revised, updated, and expanded English edition of the important Analyse fonctionnelle (1983). In addition, it contains a wealth of problems and exercises (with solutions) to guide the reader. Uniquely, this book presents in a coherent, concise and unified way the main results from functional analysis together with the main results from the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Although there are many books on functional analysis and many on PDEs, this is the first to cover both of these closely connected topics. Since the French book was first published, it has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, Greek and Chinese. The English edition makes a welcome addition to this list.
