Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of Calderwood's Handbook of Moral Philosophy..., Vol. 1 II. - That moral distinctions are in consciousness and therefore recognised by men generally, may be shown by reference to the testimony, 1st From individual conduct. Every one recognizes his own actions as right or wrong. 2nd From social life. Society approves right actions, and punishes wrong. Chapter II. Moral judgements. The knowledge here to be explained involves a relation between me and mine, and between me and others, and presupposes the existence of a cognitive power belonging to my personality. Knowledge of matters of fact takes three forms, 1st Sensation. 2nd Perception. 3rd Judgment. Since affections and sensations presuppose one or more of these forms of knowledge, and since association merely provides for their combination, neither the sensational nor the associational theory can afford any valid explanation of the origin of our knowledge of moral distinctions. Of the sensational theorists, Jonathan Edwards made the standard of morality, benevolence; David Hume derived it from reason and sentiment; Adam Smith made the foundation of morality sympathy fellow-feeling; and Dr. Thomas Brown founded it upon the emotions. The knowledge of moral quality in an action is not of the nature of sensation, since this is simply an involuntary experience consequent on personal relations to a sensitive organism. Nor is it of the nature of perception since this is a simple recognition of fact, and can include only such facts as are capable of being known without comparison or inference. Perception can give knowledge of an action, but not of its moral quality. Knowledge of moral quality is of the nature of a judgement. It can be obtained only by comparison. This comparison is not of individual objects or actions, but of a particular act with a general truth. These judgments are distinguished, not by their moral quality as right or wrong, but by their intellectual quality as true or false. In other kinds of judgment the standard may be variable, but in these it is immutable. Therefore, every valid moral judgment must carry in it a general truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Moral Philosophy In its higher development, when dealing with relations tran scending the facts of experience, as when treating of our relations to the Absolute Being, Moral Philosophy becomes a Speculative Science. Any denial of a speculative branch of the science must rest on the denial of the need for a philo Sophy of the fact of man's existence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many novel ideas, the idea for this volume and its predecessor arose over lunch in the cafeteria of the old Wellcome Institute. On an atternoon in Sept- ber 1988, Dorothy and Roy Porter, and I, sketched out a plan for a set of conf- ences in which scholars from a variety of disciplines would explore the emergence of modern medical ethics in the English-speaking world: from its pre-history in the quarrels that arose as gentlemanly codes of etiquette and honor broke down under the pressure of the eighteenth-century "sick trade," to the Enlightenment ethics of John Gregory and Thomas Percival, to the American appropriation process that culminated in the American Medical Association's 1847 Code of Ethics, and to the British turn to medical jurisprudence in the 1858 Medical Act. Roy Porter formally presented our idea as a plan for two back-to-back c- ferences to the Wellcome Trust, and I presented it to the editors of the PHI- LOSOPHY AND MEDICINE series, H. Tristram Engeihardt, Jr. and Stuart Spicker. The reception from both parties was enthusiastic and so, with the financial backing of the former and a commitment to publication from the latter, Roy Porter, ably assisted by Frieda Hauser and Steven Emberton, - ganized two conferences. The first was held at the Wellcome Institute in - cember 1989; the second was sponsored by the Wellcome, but was actually held in the National Hospital, in December 1990.

Download or read book Arguments for Liberty written by Aaron Ross Powell and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two schools of thought have long dominated libertarian discussions about ethics: utilitarianism and natural rights. Those two theories are important, but they’re not the only ways people think about ethics and political philosophy. In Arguments for Liberty, you’ll find a broader approach to libertarianism. In each of Arguments for Liberty’s nine chapters a different political philosopher discusses how his or her preferred school of thought judges political institutions and why libertarianism best meets that standard. Though they end up in the same place, the paths they take diverge in fascinating ways. Readers will find in these pages not only an excellent introduction to libertarianism, but also a primer on some of the most important political and ethical theories. Assuming little or no training in academic philosophy, the essays guide readers through a continuous moral conversation spanning centuries and continents, from Aristotle in ancient Athens to twentieth-century philosopher John Rawls in the halls of Harvard. What’s the best political system? What standards should we use to decide, and why? Arguments for Liberty is a guide to thinking about these questions. It’s also a powerful, nine-fold argument for the goodness and importance of human liberty.
