Book excerpt: The morphological and chemical characterization of M30 propellants recovered after conventional and plasma ignition with polyethylene (PE) terephthalate (Mylar) in an interrupted closed bomb (extinguished at pressures between 35 and 100 Mpa) has been performed. It has been reported that burning rate augmentation appears to occur during the plasma event, but there was no evidence for post-plasma augmentation. For the extinguished grains from PE plasma ignition, there appears to be removal of nitroguanidine (NQ) crystals in the perforations. Also, hot embedded particles and increased surface area were observed, instead of the melt layer normally obtained with conventionally ignited samples. Although extensive chemical characterization has been performed, there appears to be very little chemical difference between the burned surfaces and subsurfaces of the plasma and conventionally ignited samples. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that although a melt layer is present on the surface of M30, it is immeasurably thin. Moreover, the SEM analysis showed that NQ depletion in the perforations was most evident at the lowest blow-out pressure used (35 Mpa) and seemed to diminish at higher pressure, apparently becoming obscured by "normal" burning processes. Thus, plasma-propellant interactions and associated effects may occur only very early during ignition, and it may be that there are few decomposition products remaining near the surfaces of the samples.

Book excerpt: Interrupted- and noninterrupted-burning tests were conducted with cylindrical perforated grains of JA2 and M30 in a closed bomb with a loading density of approximately 0.2 g/cu cm. Both conventional black-powder and plasma igniters were used. The plasma igniter was an ablating capillary, and the electrical energy density was about 0.7 kJ/g of propellant. The diameters of the collected grains yielded the actual burn distance at the time of the interrupted burning. The experimental pressure traces and the conventional burn-rate coefficients of the propellants were used to calculate the theoretical depth burned assuming no plasma-induced burn-rate modifications. Overlapping pressure traces at several interrupted pressures and from comparison to the calculated-versus-measured burn distances indicated that there is burn-rate enhancement during the plasma pulse, but not much once the pulse has ended. In contrast to the JA2 burn rates, both ambient and cold ( -20 deg C) M30 burn rates, deduced from the noninterrupted tests using the BRLCB code, were enhanced even after the plasma turn-off, thus contradicting the interrupted test results. However, vivacity analysis of the noninterrupted tests indicated that the M30 grains exhibited increased surface area (possible fragmentation) because of the plasma interaction, an effect that would cause erroneous results from the BRLCB. Indeed, simulating the noninterrupted M30 tests using the XNOVAKTC code and assuming partial fragmentation of the propellant charge yielded vivacities that mimicked the experimental ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments show that the burning rate of solid propellants is a function of the pressure under which the burning takes place. An often used method to determine that burning rate function is to burn a sample of the propellant in a closed container and to register the corresponding pressure-time data. With the aid of formulas from thermodynamic theory these observations can be manipulated to yield the desired parameters of the burning rate function. This analysis is typically done under a number of restrictive assumptions, e.g., the assumption of constant temperature in the container throughout the experiment. In spite of such assumptions the corresponding algorithms published are complicated and an error analysis of the results has apparently never been reported. In the present paper new formulas are derived under relaxed assumptions. With the aid of these formulas the data analysis is reduced to a curve fitting task. For such tasks standard theories and computer programs are available, which furnish the unknown parameters of the burning rate function together with estimates of their variances and co-variances. The new formulas can be replaced by simpler ones under conditions, which are controllable by the design of the experiment. It is found that for such simplifications the temperature's behavior is not relevant. In general the simplifications are permissible if the maximum pressure achieved during the experiment remains essentially smaller than the chemical energy released per unit volume of the propellant. The latter is typically of the order of 10 to 10th power Pa (10 to 5th power). An example illustrates the application of the new algorithm.

Book excerpt: Closed-chamber electrothermal-chemical firings of JA2 7-perf propellant revealed the presence of oscillations on its burn rates. This study was originated by questions raised about the probable causes for this phenomena. The discussion that follows analyses the fiber-optic links utilized for the data acquisition, the code used to deduce the propellant burn rate and the filtering for data smoothing, and finally, the effect of the plasma injection and its energy. The result of this analysis suggests that the plasma injection contributes to burn-rate oscillations, that their amplitude is proportional to the energy of the plasma injected, and that the oscillations are a function of the closed-chamber pressure.

Book excerpt: Theoretical analysis and experimental measurements are defined for the investigation of high pressure combustion of solid propellants in ballistic devices. A new and accurate heat flux measurement technique is used for determination of the equation of state for the propellant gas. A method of determining the burning rate for the solid propellant from the closed chamber tests is described. The interior ballistic theory is reviewed in the context of a high pressure combustion device. Design and instrumentation of the closed chamber test apparatus for the equation of state and the burning rate measurements are included. An open ballistic chamber test apparatus with a moving projectile, for measurement of projectile friction and for verification of the interior ballistic performance at high chamber pressures is described. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the combustion characteristics of a Hivelite-based, very-high-burn-rate (VHBR) propellant was conducted. The experiments were performed in a closed chamber, called the VHBR bomb, that was specially designed and constructed for these experiments. The device was designed with the same diameter as the propellant samples in order to maintain one dimensional combustion processes and transient wave phenomena to simplify subsequent interpretation and analysis. Propellant combustion was characterized by a low burn rate (about 1 m/s) until a pressure in the vicinity of 15-20 MPa is reached. After this pressure, which may represent the propellant crushing or break pressure, the combustion rate accelerated to levels from 10 to 180 m/s, depending on other test parameters. Tests conducted at different loading densities indicated that combustion rate was a strong function of pressure. Variation of sample weight at constant loading density demonstrated that increasing the amount of unburned propellant at the time the break pressure was reached also causes burn rate and thrust to increase. A coating that makes the outside surface of the sample slippery tended to reduce the apparent burn rate but use of a coating which retarded transmission of gas pressure along the periphery of the sample increased the apparent burn rate as well as thrust. Change of mounting interface properties caused significant differences in the dynamic characteristics leading to increased thrust.

Book excerpt: An experimental study of the effects of acceleration fields on the burning rate of solid propellant grains is being conducted. A variety of formulations are being studied over a range of pressures and acceleration loadings; the results will eventually be used to evaluate theoretical models of the process or to form the basis for improved models. The acceleration vector, produced by spinning a disc-shaped propellant in a large volume optical bomb, can be directed perpendicularly into or away from the burning surface. Three formulations have been studied to date under both vector orientations. (Author).

Book excerpt: A series of exercises was undertaken by participants from the three services, private industry, and academia to assess the comparability of propellant burning rate data among installations. The study involved both the closed bomb and high pressure strand burner techniques. Identical propellant formulations were distributed to the participants, burned, and the data converted to burning rates using methods prevailing at each installation. In some cases closed bomb as well as strand burner results showed excellent agreement (to + or - 2.5 percent on the average and to within + or - 1 percent mid-range). In less favorable cases closed bomb burning rates from different installations exhibited two or three times as much scatter. In one case there were significant differences between closed bomb and strand burner data. For the closed bomb data, variations could be linked to experimental factors such as loading density, sample quickness, and ignition parameters, as well as post-acquisition data manipulation techniques such as smoothing and differentiation. Book excerpt: A new method for determining propelland strand burning rates without the use of timing wires has been developed. It was found that when the cross-sectional area of the strand is sharply varied at known intervals, the burning rate can be obtained from assessment of the resulting pressure-time trace. Results of the new method are within 1% of the standard wire technique. The method is applicable to ''difficult'' propellant systems and offers advantages of lower cost, higher reliability, and safety. (Author).
