Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Synopsis Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design by : E. Torenbeek
Download or read book Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design written by E. Torenbeek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the education of aeronautical engineers at Delft University of Technology started in 1940 under tae inspiring leadership of Professor H.J. van der Maas, much emphasis has been placed on the design of aircraft as part of the student's curriculum. Not only is aircraft design an optional subject for thesis work, but every aeronautical student has to carry out a preliminary airplane design in the course of his study. The main purpose of this preliminary design work is to enable the student to synthesize the knowledge ob tained separately in courses on aerodynamics, aircraft performances, stability and con trol, aircraft structures, etc. The student's exercises in preliminary design have been directed through the years by a number of staff members of the Department of Aerospace Engineering in Delft. The author of this book, Mr. E. Torenbeek, has made a large contribution to this part of the study programme for many years. Not only has he acquired vast experience in teaching airplane design at university level, but he has also been deeply involved in design-oriented re search, e.g. developing rational design methods and systematizing design information. I am very pleased that this wealth of experience, methods and data is now presented in this book.

Book Synopsis Special Course on Inverse Methods for Airfoil Design for Aeronautical and Turbomachinery Applications by :
Download or read book Special Course on Inverse Methods for Airfoil Design for Aeronautical and Turbomachinery Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This lecture series is devoted to major aspects of aerofoil design both for aeronautical and turbomachine application. These include: (1) optimisation of target pressure and velocity distribution. Both direct optimisation resulting from an inverse boundary layer calculation and an iterative optimisation of the loses are presented. (2) aerofoil design by means of inverse methods. This ranges from simple parametric definitions of two- dimensional cross sections to a detailed numerical definition of three dimensional shapes. blade or airfoil designs are normally made in two steps, and the lectures are accordingly grouped into two parts. First, optimisation of target pressure and velocity distributions are discussed taking into account the required performance and the lost mechanisms in the boundary layer. Both direct optimisation resulting from an inverse boundary layer calculation, and an iterative optimisation by minimisation of the losses are presented. It is clear from both procedures that inclusion of off-design operation is one of the greatest difficulties involved in blade or airfoil operation. The second part gives an overview of the numerous inverse blade design methods that have been developed both for turbomachinery and aeronautical applications. This ranges from simple parameter definitions of two-dimensional cross-sections to the full three-dimensional definition of wings and blade channels."--DTIC.
Book Synopsis Advanced Aircraft Design by : Egbert Torenbeek
Download or read book Advanced Aircraft Design written by Egbert Torenbeek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the overall appearance of modern airliners has not changed a lot since the introduction of jetliners in the 1950s, their safety, efficiency and environmental friendliness have improved considerably. Main contributors to this have been gas turbine engine technology, advanced materials, computational aerodynamics, advanced structural analysis and on-board systems. Since aircraft design became a highly multidisciplinary activity, the development of multidisciplinary optimization (MDO) has become a popular new discipline. Despite this, the application of MDO during the conceptual design phase is not yet widespread. Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes presents a quasi-analytical optimization approach based on a concise set of sizing equations. Objectives are aerodynamic efficiency, mission fuel, empty weight and maximum takeoff weight. Independent design variables studied include design cruise altitude, wing area and span and thrust or power loading. Principal features of integrated concepts such as the blended wing and body and highly non-planar wings are also covered. The quasi-analytical approach enables designers to compare the results of high-fidelity MDO optimization with lower-fidelity methods which need far less computational effort. Another advantage to this approach is that it can provide answers to “what if” questions rapidly and with little computational cost. Key features: Presents a new fundamental vision on conceptual airplane design optimization Provides an overview of advanced technologies for propulsion and reducing aerodynamic drag Offers insight into the derivation of design sensitivity information Emphasizes design based on first principles Considers pros and cons of innovative configurations Reconsiders optimum cruise performance at transonic Mach numbers Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes advances understanding of the initial optimization of civil airplanes and is a must-have reference for aerospace engineering students, applied researchers, aircraft design engineers and analysts.

Book Synopsis The Spanwise Distribution of Lift for Minimum Induced Drag of Wings Having a Given Lift and a Given Bending Moment by : Robert T. Jones
Download or read book The Spanwise Distribution of Lift for Minimum Induced Drag of Wings Having a Given Lift and a Given Bending Moment written by Robert T. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the minimum induced drag of wings having a given lift and a given span is extended to include cases in which the bending moment to be supported by the wing is also given. Expressions for the spanwise load distribution and the minimum drag in terms of the lateral position of the load centroid are given. The results show a 15-percent reduction of the induced drag with a 15-percent increase in span over that for an elliptic loading having the same total lift and bending moment.
