Cet ouvrage est consacré aux deux méthodologies les plus utilisées pour l'évaluation des performances : la simulation à l'aide de logiciels spécialisés et la modélisation mathématique. Une part importante est dédiée à la simulation, plus particulièrement à son cadre théorique ainsi qu'aux précautions à prendre dans la mise en œuvre de ce procédé expérimental. Ces principes sont illustrés par des exemples concrets réalisés grâce à des langages de simulation opérationnels (OMNeT++, OPNET). Présentée au titre de l'approche complémentaire, la méthode mathématique est indispensable à la simulation. Les deux méthodologies s'appuyant largement sur la théorie des probabilités et la statistique en général et plus particulièrement les processus de Markov, un rappel des résultats de base est également proposé.

En outre, les applications parallèles provenant du calcul scientifique s'efforcent d'exploiter au maximum les ressources d'une architecture parallèle. La compréhension du partage de ressource devient un des défis majeurs pour utiliser efficacement ces architectures. Ces nouveaux comportements de partage de ressources, ainsi produits, sont difficiles à interpréter et à prédire. Dans cette thèse, nous avons étudié le problème du partage du réseau. Les grappes de calcul utilisent des réseaux dédiés tels que Gigabit Ethernet, Myrinet ou Quadrics. L'exécution simultanée des tâches d'une application entraîne des accès concurrents sur la ressource réseau. Leurs effets conduisent à une perte de performance qui découle du partage de la bande passante réseau entre communications. Suivant ce contexte, nous présentons une analyse fine des comportements concurrents sur les architectures : Quadrics, Myrinet et Gigabit Ethernet. Cette analyse conduit à la définition de modèles prédictifs basés sur la notion de partage de la bande passante. En outre, nous montons que l'intégration de ces modèles dans une simulation permet de prédire les impacts dûs à la concurrence entre communications MPI résultantes de l'exécution d'applications scientifiques. La prédiction des comportements concurrents donne lieu, au niveau scientifique et technique, à une meilleure connaissance des besoins des applications et, au niveau industriel, à la proposition de solutions de grappes adaptées aux besoins de leurs clientèles.

On s'intéresse plus particulièrement à leur modélisation à l'aide de chaînes de Markov hybrides et à la résolution analytique de ces modèles. On caractérise les performances d'un réseau avec différents paramètres comme le débit ou les pertes. On peut les obtenir à l'aide de simulateurs, reposant sur un modèle discret pour la plupart. Mais ceci peut entraîner des temps de simulation très longs. C'est pour cela que nous développons une méthode analytique basée sur un modèle fluide du réseau. L'utilisation d'un modèle fluide associé à une méthode d'aggrégation réduit la complexité du problème et permet une résolution analytique plus rapide que la simulation. Nous nous intéressons d'abord à un système simple, dit mono-buffer, afin de déterminer quelques résultats utiles à l'étude de réseaux plus complexes. Ensuite nous présentons une méthode analytique pour le cas des réseaux de routeurs sous certaines hypothèses en utilisant une représentation Markovienne des états du réseau considéré. Les réseaux comportant la plupart du temps des convergences et des divergences, la méthode analytique a été adaptée pour permettre l'évaluation de performances dans ce type de situation. Les résultats obtenus sont comparables à ceux donnés par les simulateurs classiques, mais avec un temps de calcul beaucoup plus court.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we look at several modeling problems to estimate some parameters or to evaluate the performance of some mechanisms. The first subject is about the estimation of the cross traffic intensity and the buffer size at the bottleneck of a connection. We develop two inference models based on the M/M/1/K and M/D/1/K queues and derive 11 schemes for estimating the above-mentioned parameters. The second subject is about the on-line estimation of the membership of multicast groups. We first model the multicast group by an M/M/infinity queue and show that the estimation problem can be solved using a Kalman filter (heavy traffic case) and a Wiener filter (general case). We then design an efficient estimator using the M/H2/infinity queue model. The third subject is about agent location mechanisms in a mobile code environment. We propose Markovian models to evaluate the cost of two such mechanisms in terms of response times. All our models are validated via simulations and experiments.

After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
