Book excerpt: The present work is devoted to the study of the Navier-Stokes equations for barotropic compressible fluids in a bounded three dimensional domain. The main originality of this work consists in the choice of non-classical boundary conditions. In the inviscid case - the Euler equations - a natural boundary condition is the impermeability of the velocity field on the boundary. In the viscous case, supplementary boundary conditions are needed: in 2004, in the case of the incompressible model, professors J. Neustupa and P. Penel suggested to complete the Navier-Stokes equations with the generalized impermeability boundary conditions that also concern the vorticity field. By this way, they have introduced an alternative theory to the classical one. We extend this theory to the viscous barotropic compressible model. We present two approximate models based on a separation of the original system into a Stokes problem adequate to the boundary conditions and two Poisson problem with Neumann boundary conditions. This approach particularly point out the interest of the Helmholtz decomposition, the importance of the Leray Schauder theorem in order to prove the existence of the solutions and the essential role of a pressure called the effective pressure. The limit procedure are difficult and technical but classical today. We have inspired from the works of the French (P.L. Lions) and Czech (A. Novotny and I. Straskraba) Schools. The second model provides us with a solution with a bounded density. P. B. Mucha and M. Pokorny recently developed the same analysis with Navier boundary conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the classical Navier-Stokes system of equations governing the planar flow of incompressible, viscid fluid. It is a first-of-its-kind book, devoted to all aspects of the study of such flows, ranging from theoretical to numerical, including detailed accounts of classical test problems such as “driven cavity” and “double-driven cavity”.A comprehensive treatment of the mathematical theory developed in the last 15 years is elaborated, heretofore never presented in other books. It gives a detailed account of the modern compact schemes based on a “pure streamfunction” approach. In particular, a complete proof of convergence is given for the full nonlinear problem. This volume aims to present a variety of numerical test problems. It is therefore well positioned as a reference for both theoretical and applied mathematicians, as well as a text that can be used by graduate students pursuing studies in (pure or applied) mathematics, fluid dynamics and mathematical physics./a

In this book, fluid mechanics is addressed from both physical and mathematical perspectives. As a first step, the basic theory of continuum mechanics is detailed, pointing out the different assumptions and approximations that lead to conservation laws. As a second step, scaling studies, dimensional analysis and similitude of the general equations help to introduce the inviscid Euler fluid approximation, the Stokes approximation of viscous flow and Prandtl’s boundary layer approximation. Lastly, the concepts of stability, turbulence and compressible flows are presented. Multiphysics approach of flows will provide readers with deeper insights into basic and applied research on complex processing.

Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This book provides a successful solution to one of the central problems of mathematical fluid mechanics: the Leray's problem on existence of a solution to the boundary value problem for the stationary Navier--Stokes system in bounded domains under sole condition of zero total flux. This marks the culmination of the authors' work over the past few years on this under-explored topic within the study of the Navier--Stokes equations. This book will be the first major work on the Navier--Stokes equations to explore Leray's problem in detail. The results are presented with detailed proofs, as are the history of the problem and the previous approaches to finding a solution to it. In addition, for the reader's convenience and for the self-sufficiency of the text, the foundations of the mathematical theory for incompressible fluid flows described by the steady state Stokes and Navier--Stokes systems are presented. For researchers in this active area, this book will be a valuable resource

Book excerpt: This book presents different formulations of the equations governing incompressible viscous flows, in the form needed for developing numerical solution procedures. The conditions required to satisfy the no-slip boundary conditions in the various formulations are discussed in detail. Rather than focussing on a particular spatial discretization method, the text provides a unitary view of several methods currently in use for the numerical solution of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, using either finite differences, finite elements or spectral approximations. For each formulation, a complete statement of the mathematical problem is provided, comprising the various boundary, possibly integral, and initial conditions, suitable for any theoretical and/or computational development of the governing equations. The text is suitable for courses in fluid mechanics and computational fluid dynamics. It covers that part of the subject matter dealing with the equations for incompressible viscous flows and their determination by means of numerical methods. A substantial portion of the book contains new results and unpublished material.

Book excerpt: In this book we formulate and prove the variational extremum principle for viscous incompressible and compressible fluid, from which principle follows that the Naviet-Stokes equations represent the extremum conditions of a certain functional. We describe the method of seeking solution for these equations, which consists in moving along the gradient to this functional extremum. We formulate the conditions of reaching this extremum, which are at the same time necessary and sufficient conditions of this functional global extremum existence.

Book excerpt: The lectures collected for this volume were given during a workshop entitled, "Semi-analytic Methods for the Navier Stokes Equations" held at the CRM in Montréal. The title reflects the current reality in fluid dynamics: Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) describe the behavior of fluid in a wide range of physical situations, the solutions of these equations are sufficiently complicated, so that another level of analysis is clearly needed. The fundamental problem is not just to solve the NSE, but also to understand what the solutions mean. One of the goals of the workshop was to bring together people who, while working in different fields, share a common perspective on the nature of the problem to be solved. The lectures present a diverse set of techniques for modelling, computing, and understanding phenomena such as instabilities, turbulence and spatiotemporal chaos in fluids.

Book excerpt: In the first part of this thesis we established a maximal regularity result to the Stokes equations in exterior domains with moving boundary. This leads to existence of solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations globally in time for small data. Secondly, we consider Leray's problem on the decay of weak solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations in an exterior domain with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data. It is shown that the solution decays polynomially.

Book excerpt: Navier-Stokes Equations: Theory and Numerical Analysis focuses on the processes, methodologies, principles, and approaches involved in Navier-Stokes equations, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and mathematical analysis to which CFD is grounded. The publication first takes a look at steady-state Stokes equations and steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. Topics include bifurcation theory and non-uniqueness results, discrete inequalities and compactness theorems, existence and uniqueness theorems, discretization of Stokes equations, existence and uniqueness for the Stokes equations, and function spaces. The text then examines the evolution of Navier-Stokes equations, including linear case, compactness theorems, alternate proof of existence by semi-discretization, and discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations. The book ponders on the approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations by the projection and compressibility methods; properties of the curl operator and application to the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations; and implementation of non-conforming linear finite elements. The publication is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the theory and numerical analysis of Navier-Stokes equations.
