Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Sensitivity in Econometric Models Edwin Kuh, John W. Neese and Peter Hollinger Provides a pathbreaking assessment of the worth of linear dynamic systems methods for probing the behavior of complex macroeconomic models. Representing a major improvement upon the standard "black box" approach to analyzing economic model structure, it introduces the powerful concept of parameter sensitivity analysis within a linear systems root/vector framework. The approach is illustrated with a good mediumsize econometric model (Michigan Quarterly Econometric Model of the United States). EISPACK, the Fortran code for computing characteristic roots and vectors has been upgraded and augmented by a model linearization code and a broader algorithmic framework. Also features an interface between the algorithmic code and the interactive modeling system (TROLL), making an unusually wide range of linear systems methods accessible to economists, operations researchers, engineers and physical scientists. 1985 (0-471-81930-1) 324 pp. Linear Statistical Models and Related Methods With Applications to Social Research John Fox A comprehensive, modern treatment of linear models and their variants and extensions, combining statistical theory with applied data analysis. Considers important methodological principles underlying statistical methods. Designed for researchers and students who wish to apply these models to their own work in a flexible manner. 1984 (0 471-09913-9) 496 pp. Statistical Methods for Forecasting Bovas Abraham and Johannes Ledolter This practical, user-oriented book treats the statistical methods and models used to produce short-term forecasts. Provides an intermediate level discussion of a variety of statistical forecasting methods and models and explains their interconnections, linking theory and practice. Includes numerous time-series, autocorrelations, and partial autocorrelation plots. 1983 (0 471-86764-0) 445 pp.

Book excerpt: This study examines the Bank's activities in the population sector by reviewing its role in eight countries. It begins by asking what demographic and related socio-economic changes have occurred since about 1968 when the Bank announced it would begin lending for this sector, what government policies affecting these trends were instituted and what role was played by the Bank vis a vis other donors during this period? The conclusions reached are based on field visits, interviews and a review of documents and literature. The picture that emerges is one of considerable diversity of activities and experiences, from which it is not easy to generalize. However, the overall conclusion is that, after slow, halting and sometimes faulty starts, the Bank has become progressively more effective in this field. From this point forward, most of what is needed involves reorientations and shifts in emphasis rather than radical departures from recent practices and levels of funding.

Book excerpt: The study provides some indications of current trends in international investment flows & likely developments through the beginning of the next century. Its findings are that there will be a sharp rise in foreign investment as sales & production become more international & that this will increasingly occur through acquisitions, joint ventures & alliances. Other main conclusions are that developing economies will attract growing amounts of foreign direct investment & that the principal determinant for investing abroad will remain to get market access. While this study is based on subjective views, the individuals who have expressed them are in the driver's seat when it comes to internationalization. Their assessments therefore provide important pointers to developments that are likely to occur.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two decades, there has been growing concern over the environmental implications of development. There is evidence that the mismanagement of renewable resources has been widespread as populations have increased and countries have tried to cope with the imperative need to promote economic growth. This report analyzes the results of 355 agriculture and forestry projects in the tropics which have been completed. Further, it examines the findings in the case studies of 12 countries. These countries represent the three principal tropical ecologic zones. Specifically the report consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 reviews the findings of PPARs, PCRs and IERs on resource management issues. Chapters 2 through 4 summarize the main findings of the 12 case studies of countries. Chapter 5 examines the Bank's role in identifying and dealing with policy issues affecting resource management. Chapter 6 discusses the opportunities and constraints that exist if the Bank is to address resource management issues more effectively.
