L’étude a été conduite dans les communes de Kandi appartenant au pôle de développement agricole deux. Dans la communes, les données ont été collectées, dans des villages produisant les deux types de coton, sur un échantillon aléatoire stratifié de 82 producteurs (54 producteurs conventionnels et 28 biologiques). Il ressort des résultats obtenus que le coton biologique et le coton conventionnel sont rentables dans la commune de Kandi. Le coton biologique a présenté les meilleures performances financières. D’une manière générale les principaux facteurs déterminant la rentabilité du coton sont de trois ordres : institutionnel (intensité de l’encadrement, montant du crédit), socio démographique et économique (nombre d’actifs agricoles et niveau d’instruction) et technique (pratique de la jachère et quantité de main d’oeuvre familiale allouée aux traitements phytosanitaires). La plupart des économies du monde organise leurs secteurs d’activité pour une amélioration de la qualité et une augmentation de la production des biens et services. Le secteur du coton joue un rôle prépondérant dans la croissance des économies et l’amélioration des niveaux de vie et du pouvoir d’achat des populations agricoles. Dans les années récentes, la Chine semble être la première productrice du coton dans le monde suivi de l’Inde. En matière de statistique de production mondiale, le continent Africain occupe la troisième place mondiale avec en occurrence le Burkina, la Cote d’ivoire, le Mali, le Bénin, comme peloton de tête en Afrique. Le coton africain affiche une particularité dans sa qualité et n’occupe que 10% de la production mondiale. Au Bénin, le secteur agricole emploie environ 70% de la population active et contribue pour près de 36% du PIB (Produit Intérieur Brut). Le coton constitue la principale culture de rente qui représente 40% des entrées de devises 13% du PIB avec une production d'environ 678000 tonnes en 2918/2019 ; 714000 tonnes en 2019/2020 et 728000 tonnes en 2020/2021. Margé les énormes efforts consentis par le Gouvernement et ses partenaires pour son développement, la filière coton reste confrontée à plusieurs difficultés depuis quelques années.

Both demands are rooted in an improved understanding of the mechanistic origins of plant development. Such understanding requires geometric and topological descriptors to characterize the phenotype of plants and its link to genotypes. However, the current plant phenotyping framework relies on simple length and diameter measurements, which fail to capture the exquisite architecture of plants. The Research Topic “Morphological Plant Modeling: Unleashing Geometric and Topological Potential within the Plant Sciences” is the result of a workshop held at National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) in Knoxville, Tennessee. From 2.-4. September 2015 over 40 scientists from mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics and biology came together to set new frontiers in combining plant phenotyping with recent results from shape theory at the interface of geometry and topology. In doing so, the Research Topic synthesizes the views from multiple disciplines to reveal the potential of new mathematical concepts to analyze and quantify the relationship between morphological plant features. As such, the Research Topic bundles examples of new mathematical techniques including persistent homology, graph-theory, and shape statistics to tackle questions in crop breeding, developmental biology, and vegetation modeling. The challenge to model plant morphology under field conditions is a central theme of the included papers to address the problems of climate change and food security, that require the integration of plant biology and mathematics from geometry and topology research applied to imaging and simulation techniques. The introductory white paper written by the workshop participants identifies future directions in research, education and policy making to integrate biological and mathematical approaches and to strengthen research at the interface of both disciplines.

Higher organisms contain a specific set of linear DNA molecules called chromosomes and a complete set of chromosomes in an organism comprises its genome. The collection of traits displayed by any organism (phenotype) depends on the genes present in its genome (genotype). The appearance of any specific trait also will depend on many other factors, including whether the gene(s) responsible for the trait is/are turned on (expressed) or off, the specific cells within which the genes are expressed and how the genes, their expression and the gene products interact with environmental factors. The primary biotechnology which concerns us is that of genetic manipulation, which has a direct impact on biodiversity at the genetic level. By these manipulations, novel genes or gene fragments can be introduced into organisms (creating transgenics) or existing genes within an organism can be altered. Transgenics are a major area of concern, combining genes from different species to effectively create novel organisms. Current rates of disappearance of biological and cultural diversity in the world are unprecedented. Intensive resource exploitation due to social and economic factors has led to the destruction, conversion or degradation of ecosystems. Reversing these trends requires time to time assessment to integrate conservation and development.
