Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have we become beauty-blind? For two decades or more in the humanities, various political arguments have been put forward against beauty: that it distracts us from more important issues; that it is the handmaiden of privilege; and that it masks political interests. In On Beauty and Being Just Elaine Scarry not only defends beauty from the political arguments against it but also argues that beauty does indeed press us toward a greater concern for justice. Taking inspiration from writers and thinkers as diverse as Homer, Plato, Marcel Proust, Simone Weil, and Iris Murdoch as well as her own experiences, Scarry offers up an elegant, passionate manifesto for the revival of beauty in our intellectual work as well as our homes, museums, and classrooms. Scarry argues that our responses to beauty are perceptual events of profound significance for the individual and for society. Presenting us with a rare and exceptional opportunity to witness fairness, beauty assists us in our attention to justice. The beautiful object renders fairness, an abstract concept, concrete by making it directly available to our sensory perceptions. With its direct appeal to the senses, beauty stops us, transfixes us, fills us with a "surfeit of aliveness." In so doing, it takes the individual away from the center of his or her self-preoccupation and thus prompts a distribution of attention outward toward others and, ultimately, she contends, toward ethical fairness. Scarry, author of the landmark The Body in Pain and one of our bravest and most creative thinkers, offers us here philosophical critique written with clarity and conviction as well as a passionate plea that we change the way we think about beauty.

Book excerpt: Are you feeling overwhelmed by life’s challenges? Struggling to find balance, overcome adversity, or adapt to change? You’re not alone. Many of us are searching for ways to grow stronger, more resilient, and wiser. But the answers may not be as far as you think. Through engaging analogies and profound reflections, Animal Analogies: Tales from the Wild descends deep into the life lessons offered by the natural world, offering readers a fresh perspective on how to handle the storms of life. Each chapter unpacks the struggles and triumphs of various animals, and draws powerful parallels to the challenges we face in our everyday lives. Imagine learning endurance from the camel as it braves harsh deserts, or embracing joy and playfulness like the dolphin in the ocean, or gaining perseverance from the camel as it braves hard deserts. What if you could lead like a lion, with courage and strength, or like an owl, finding knowledge in solitude? These aren't simply anecdotes; these are practical, useful insights that can assist you in overcoming your most difficult challenges. But there’s more at stake. As the world grows more complex, the ability to adapt, lead, and thrive becomes more crucial than ever. What if you don’t change? What if you don’t find that balance between intelligence and compassion, strength and vulnerability? The cost of staying the same could be greater than you think. The book asks a crucial question with each animal analogy: Are you prepared to use nature's knowledge to live a more contented, meaningful life? Animal Analogies: Tales from the Wild is a handbook, a meditation, and a call to action all rolled into one book. Will you let the wisdom of the wild transform your life before it’s too late?

This book was released on 1983-12-28 with total page 1496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword This Concordance of the Qur'an in English satisfies a paramount need of those—and there are millions of them—who have no command of the Arabic language and yet desire to understand the Qur'an. The benefit derivable from English translations of the Sacred Book is, in principle, limited because, first, the Qur'an is not a "book" but a collection of passages revealed to Muhammad over a period of about twenty-three years and, second, because the Qur'an is not really translatable. This does not mean that the Qur'an should not be translated. It does mean that translations lose much in tone and nuance, let alone the incommunicable beauty, grandeur, and grace of the original. . . . The main distinction of Hana Kassis's concordance, in my view, is that it utilizes the semantic structure of Arabic vocabulary itself in revealing the meaning of the Qur'an on any given issue, point or concept. A reader who looks in the index of this concordance for a word which he has encountered in reading an English translation of the Qur'an—the word pride, for example—is directed immediately to the roots of the Arabic, Qur'anic terms for pride. At tne entries for these Arabic roots, all the derivative forms are shown, and the verses of the Qur'an in which they appear are there listed in translation. . . . I am confident that any person who is sincerely interested in understanding the Qur'an and appreciating the nuances of its diction and shades of its meaning can satisfy his need more fully with this book than in any way short of developing a real command over the Arabic language itself. —Fazlur Rahman, Professor of Islamic Thought, University of Chicago

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Islam as the faith of God has been buried and lost to antiquity, but the message in the Quran has been gaining renewed visibility as both a very negative and as a positive influence. In spite of its growing visibility, there are baffling issues, as with all religions, whether the individual, in reality, adheres to the tenets of the Quran and the Faith. There is clearly a phenomenal misunderstanding prevalent about Islam and the Quran. The author undertook a serious study of the Quran over several years and dispassionately stresses the importance and relevance of the text to contemporary times where heated arguments persist as to which is the 'better/true religion. The author presents direct quotes from the Quran and provides explanations thereof based on textual commentaries and her personal understanding with the sincere hope that those who are interested in knowing the basic facts in the Quran get a clearer understanding of this preserved word of God.

Book excerpt: The Muslim Students Association at the University of California says on their website: "Prophet Muhammad (saas) was the final Messenger of Allah to humanity, and therefore the Qur'an is the last Message which Allah has sent to us. Its predecessors such as the Torah, Psalms, and Gospels have all been superseded. It is an obligation — and blessing — for all who hear of the Qur'an and Islam to investigate it and evaluate it for themselves. Allah has guaranteed that He will protect the Qur'an from human tampering, and today's readers can find exact copies of it all over the world. The Qur'an of today is the same as the Qur'an revealed to Muhammad (saas)." (Emphasis mine). Are Muslims ready for such an investigation and evaluation of the Qur'an? It is a challenge we must take up. Author G.J.O. Moshay approaches this investigation with level-headed gentleness, but nonetheless holds nothing back. He shows that the Qur'an does not stand up under such scrutiny. His logic is both quiet and irresistible. He quotes what the Qur an says about itself, and then asks questions that simply cannot be answered. He goes on to list many of the surprising contradictions found in the Qur'an. He shows how the Qur an claims that Allah can say one thing today, and then change it tomorrow. Is Allah error free? Of interest are the statements in the Qur'an which clearly connect people who even secular history reveal lived over 1,000 years apart. Make no doubt: Moshay is writing from a Christian perspective. What makes him unique is his in-depth knowledge of the Qur'an and its problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So you think theres no point in reading Holy Scriptures? -too complicated, probably all made up by humans and time-consuming? Science & Religion at odds with each other? Impossible to figure out the meaning of life? The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking all that you need to know? - think again..... Would you believe me if I said that the Quran (written in the 7th century) actually CONFIRMS the immaculate conception of Jesus and that there is a whole chapter devoted to Mary ? Would you believe that the Quran actually CONFIRMS the previous revelations in the original Torah and Gospel/s ? How would you feel if you discovered that there are many astronomical, cosmological, scientific and embryological details in the Quran, and that they are accurate to the present day? And that many of them were written centuries before they were scientifically proven-including the Big Bang and the expansion of the Universe? Furthermore, in the Quran, God actually STATES that He did NOT make the Universe because He was bored and actually mentions the specific reasons why he made Mankind. Allah (God) also states that it is up to the individual to make his/her mind up about His existence and that no-one can be forced to be a believer. The original title for my book was going to be Everything you wanted to know about the Quran but were afraid to ask (!) but for such a book I think humour should take second place to a more solid title, especially considering the subject matter. This book is timely in that it looks at what the Quran says about Terrorism and openly, and without bias, discusses all the above and other important topics about the Quran and Islam (-see 'Contents') including questioning some verses of the Quran (with respect). This book is up to date, including scientifically, and no household should be without a copy.
