Book excerpt: Este trabalho preocupou-se com a analise economica do uso de recursos na exploracao leiteira da regiao do Vale do Paraiba, no Estado de Sao Paulo. O problema se caracteriza por dois aspectos fundamentais que conduzem a estimativa e analise de custos e funcoes de producao; por um lado, ha evidencias de que o nivel tecnologico de producao e baixo e, por outro, defronta-se com uma demanda insatisfeita a um preco fixado por portaria governamental. Assim, o deslocamento da curva de oferta para a direita por diminuicao nos custos de producao atraves do uso mais eficiente da tecnologia disponivel e/ou reorganizacao da producao se afigura como a forma de satisfazer a demanda a dado preco. Como base analitica utilizam-se dos principios da teoria microeconomica, especificamente da teoria da firma. Procurou-se, atraves da analise tabular, discutir as estruturas de custos aos niveis atuais de uso dos recursos, para tres estratos da amostra total, e tambem estimar e analisar as funcoes de producao para os mesmos. Usou-se para as estimativas das funcoes de producao de leite o modelo estatistico proposto por COBB-DOUGLAS.

A partir dessa funcao de producao, foram determinados: os valores dos coeficientes das elasticidades de producao; os valores dos produtos marginais da terra, do trabalho e de diferentes forma de capital e as taxas marginais de substituicao entre esses fatores. A informacao basica utilizada na pesquisa foi obtida atraves de entrevistas pessoais com os agricultores componentes de uma amostra ao acaso extraida do universo pelos agricultores dos municipios de Itapetininga e Guarei, no Estado de Sao Paulo. Essa informacao basica e pertinente ao ano agricola 1965/66. O modelo econometrico utilizado e o sugerido por Cobb e Douglas. Visando a estimar uma funcao de producao que representasse as relacoes insumo-produto existentes na regiao e que melhor se adaptasse a racionalidade economica do processo produtivo, foram testados, separadamente, sete modelos alternativos para Itapetininga, para Guarei e para os dois municipios em conjunto.
