Download or read book The Birds of Turkey written by Guy Kirwan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Birds of Turkey is the first avifauna to document this country's amazing ornithological diversity. Turkey - ornithologically one of the most fascinating countries in the Western Palearctic - lies not only at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, but also at the meeting point of a variety of biomes. The extensive semi-deserts of the Middle East reach their northernmost limit in southeastern Turkey, while the Pontic Mountains, which dominate much of the north of the country, support a principally European fauna, along with near-endemics such as Caucasian Grouse, Green Warbler, Caspian Snowcock and Krüper's Nuthatch. In Central Turkey, huge saline lakes hold colonies of flamingos, pelicans and Pygmy Cormorants, while the surrounding semi-steppe supports populations of Montagu's Harrier, Great Bustard and abundant lakes. The book looks in detail at every species ever reported in the country - breeding birds, passage migrants, winter visitors and vagrants - with a review of status and distribution, accurate distribution maps, and discussions of breeding biology and the latest taxonomic revisions. Introductory chapters provide overviews of Turkey's major biomes and the history or ornithology in the country, and a discussion of future research objections. The book also contains stunning colour photography by a number of leading Turkish ornithologists. Indispensable for anyone interested in the Turkish avifauna, The Birds of Turkey will remain the standard work on this key ornithological region for many years to come.

It is the result of year-long painstaking research into the etymology of Crimean pre-Russian habitation names, providing insight into the Turkic, Greek, Caucasian place-names in a comparative context, as well as the histories of these cities, towns and villages themselves. The dictionary contains approximately 1,500 entries, preceded by an introduction with notes on the history of the Crimea and the structure of habitation names. For the reader’s convenience, many entries are classified in indices which follow the main part of the book. Additionally, three detailed primary source maps, separately indexed, are appended to the dictionary, as well as a map showing the administration network of the Crimea at the end of the Crimean Tatar Khanate.

Book Synopsis Mesopotamian Eye Disease Texts by : Markham J. Geller
Download or read book Mesopotamian Eye Disease Texts written by Markham J. Geller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is to date no comprehensive treatment of eye disease texts from ancient Mesopotamia, and no English translation of this material is available. This volume is the first complete edition and commentary on Mesopotamian medicine from Nineveh dealing with diseases of the eye. This ancient work, languishing in British Museum archives since the 19th century, is preserved on several large cuneiform manuscripts from the royal library of Ashurbanipal, from the 7th century BC. The longest surviving ancient work on diseased eyes, the text predates by several centuries corresponding Hippocratic treatises. The Nineveh series represents a systematic array of eye symptoms and therapies, also showing commonalities with Egyptian and Greco-Roman medicine. Since scholars of Near Eastern civilizations and ancient and general historians of medicine will need to be familiar with this material, the volume makes this aspect of Babylonian medicine fully accessible to both specialists and non-specialists, with all texts being fully translated into English.

Book excerpt: In Age of Rogues, leading scholars engage with themes of historical and cultural legacies, contentious interactions within imperial regimes, and the biographical trajectory of men and women who challenged the political status quo of their time. Rebels, revolutionaries and racketeers played central roles in the violent process of imperial disintegration as it unfolded in the frontiers of the Ottoman, Habsburg, Romanov and Qajar empires. This is a history of these transgressive actors from the late-19th century to the interwar years. This time was marked by similar, if not shared, revolutionary experiences and repertoires of contention across the connected geography of the Balkans, the Middle East and the Caucasus.
