This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the world, food systems and agricultural systems are changing at a phenomenal rate. Widespread restructuring has not been confined to the production and distribution of food, though; many regions and even nations are undergoing social, political, and economic transformation as well. Bringing together twelve essays by scholars from a number of disciplines, I this timely book documents the interdependence of food systems, nation states, and the world economy. Stressing the political foundations of global agro-food systems, it sheds light on such complex questions as whether today's changes in food and agrarian systems anticipate a new world order, or are merely efforts to preserve an old order in crisis.

This book was released on 2023-11-22 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dominican Republic’s investment in agricultural R&D has been rather stagnant over the past decade (in inflation-adjusted terms). Measured against agricultural GDP, however, there has been a steady drop in investment levels. In 2020, the Dominican Republic spent just 0.18 percent of its agricultural GDP on agricultural R&D, representing among the lowest levels in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic lacks a critical mass of PhD-qualified agricultural researchers. Many scientists with PhD degrees are currently in their sixties and fast approaching the mandatory retirement age. Recruiting and training the next generation of researchers is an urgent priority. However, low public-sector salaries and limited incentives are impeding factors to attracting, motivating, and retaining young talent. Unlike their colleagues at most national agricultural research insti-tutes across Latin America, a high share of IDIAF researchers hold dual appointments as professors or resear-chers at universities or the private sector. This situation discourages universities to create permanent positions for academic staff. It also impedes the fostering of a true agri-cultural R&D ecosystem with multiple independent actors that collaborate and compete on an equal footing.

Book excerpt: Extract: The Dominican Republic's food imports from the United States (including soybeans, fats, and oils) could reach $290 million by 1985, up substantially from $167 million in 1980. The Dominican Republic's food import bill has increased more than twentyfold since 1960; soybeans, fats, and oils imports grew from $2 million in 1970 to nearly $55 million in 1980. Together, food, soybeans, fats, and oils imports from all sources should reach $400 million by 1985. Substantial P.L.-480 aid from the United States had virtually no effect on commercial food imports. The United States accounted for 67 percent of the Dominican Republic's food imports in 1980, or 73 percent including P.L.-480 aid.
