Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of General History: For the Use of Schools Ancient History describes the states that rose and fell in western Asia, Africa, and Europe, until A. D. 476, when the German race became predominant in the latter, and overthrew the Roman Empire of the West. Mediaeval History covers the thousand years between the breaking - up of the old order and the establishment of the new. It tells how the tribes of northern barbarians grew to be the nations of modern Europe, and ends with the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, A. D. 1453. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of General History: For the Use of Schools in British North America In the following work I have aimed at giving, of course in mere outline, a connected narrative of the principal facts in the History of the World. I have endeavoured to group them in such a manner as may help to indicate their relative importance, and show the bearing which one event, or age baa upon another. In my book entitled "The Great Events of History" I have described in succession the great landmarks of the Christian Centuries. The present volume takes a wider sweep, for it aims at filling up the gaps necessarily left in following out the plan of its predecessor, and thus presents a complete summary of General History. It is needless to enlarge upon the uses of such a work in small compass. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Topical Outline of General History: Designed as a Guide to the General Reader and for Review Work in Schools Certain topics are inserted more for their literary interest than for their historic value. Such things belong to a general education; and are (often exceedingly useful in setting facts in a more pleasing light. For Obvious reasons the history of England and France is treated more fully than that of other nations. The history of the United States 1s not given except as connected with other peoples; because the book is intended for those who have finished the history of their own countrv. The too common fault of giving more space to Ancient than to Modern history has been avoided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of General History: For the Use of Schools In the Outline of General History, as presented to the public nearly six years ago, the aim was to combine the extreme of brevity with a lively and simple narrative, such as might supply the present need of young scholars, while affording a symmetrical plan for the research of older ones. It was felt that much labor was left to the teacher in filling up the outline thus offered; but the author has had the satisfaction of knowing that the book, in its several editions, has been both ably and successfully used. In the present enlarged edition, much of the needed supplementary matter has been added in the form of notes upon each chapter. The selection from such a wealth of material has of course been a matter of difficulty, and it is not to be supposed that a perfect proportion has been attained. It is hoped, however, that the more practical aim has been measurably reached, - of contributing somewhat to the convenience of teachers and the profit of pupils. References to authorities have been multiplied, and the quotations, though necessarily brief, may serve as guides to a more extensive reading of the works from which they are taken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Summary of American History: For the Use of Schools IN attempting to paint a miniature of American History, from works like those of Bancroft and Hildreth and the late invaluable records of the Civil War, the author does not flatter herself that she has maintained a perfect pro portion in the reduced scale. While holding this artistic idea more or less distinctly in mind, she has at least aimed to produce a consistent view of our national annals, omit ting no incident which can claim an essential place in the chain of causes that have made our present condition what it is though many things which, during their brief exist ence, have appealed forcibly to the public eye and ear, must of necessity be crowded out. As the world grows busier, it has more need of little books. the portly folios which entertained the dignified leisure of our grandfathers serve an excellent purpose to adorn our library shelves, but those who are engaged in the pressing business of life must find their information in amore condensed and portable form. The memories of children in schools are crowded with such a mass of de tails, that there is serious danger of an act of general oblivion on escaping from the course of study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pupil's Outline of American History: An Outline for the Pupil's Use in Connection With a "Teachers' Manual and Course of Study in History and Civics for Use in the Elementary Schools" In the preparation of my Teachers' Manual and Course of Study in History and Civics, many of the ablest and most practical superintendents and teachers in California were consulted, and from them much valuable assistance was secured. Many of these men and women urged the, p_§eparation of a pupil's outline for use in connection with this manual. This little volume is the result of that advice. It has been prepared expressly for use in connection with the larger volume, and is an exact duplicate of the topical outline and references which precede the various general topics in that volume. All the main topics and all the sub-topics, with their index letters, Roman numerals, figures and references, correspond exactly in these two volumes. All the discussions, which constitute the larger part of the Teachers' Manual, however, have been omitted in the Pupil's Outline. This has been done in order to insure the proper work on the part of the pupil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Topical Outline of English History written by Frederick James Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Topical Outline of English History: Including References for Literature, for the Use of Classes in High Schools and Academies History has more sides than the gold and silver shield. No writer has given us all that is best upon any period or subject. The method of the following pages, carefully developed, and tested in the class-room with gratifying results, enables the student to appropriate the best to be found in many books. It covers the entire field of English history, and aims to fill that place in its study which the laboratory manual fills in chemistry. The topics are more complete than can be found in any one text book. They are placed upon the left side of the page, with num bers upon the right referring to the pages of the latest editions of standard school histories. The arrangement is both chronological and related, special effort being made so to group facts that relation and result may be clearly understood. Careful attention has been given to dates, and constant sight of topic and date, rather than any committing to memory, fixes both in mind. In the case of sovereigns, the pages given mark only the beginnings of the reigns in other cases the references include all of value to be found. This book is a result of practical teaching, and those teachers who have seen it in preparation have warmly advised its publication. Book Synopsis Outlines of Ancient History by : William C. Morey
Download or read book Outlines of Ancient History written by William C. Morey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Ancient History: For the Use of High Schools and Academies This book is intended to describe in a simple and compre hensive way the progress of civilization among the peoples of the ancient world. It seeks to illustrate the realhistor ical significance of these peoples, and to point out the contri butions which each has made to the progress of mankind. The significance of each country is estimated by the per manent elements of its civilization, or those elements which have survived after the nation has passed away. The purpose of the book is, therefore, not simply to describe the growth of separate countries, but to indicate in a general way the continuity of ancient history. The usual division of ancient history into Oriental, Greek, and Roman, has been followed not only as the most con venient arrangement, but as affording the means to illustrate in a satisfactory way the progressive stages in the growth of ancient civilization. A brief sketch of the Oriental countries is given to show the beginnings of man's industrial life and the initial stages in the development of government, art, science, and religion. The Greek world'is viewedas the historical field especially distinguished for the growth of political liberty and the development of a high intellec tual and aesthetic culture. In describing the Roman world, the attempt has been made to keep clearly in view that which has given to Rome its distinctive place in the world's history - the genius for organization, the growth of an imperial dominion, and the development of a universal system of government and law.
